- It was recently announced that Melee would NOT be at EVO 2019, so in remembrance of Melee at EVO, I've decided to compile the 10 greatest Melee moments at EVO!
While Melee at EVO has had some controversial moments, it still has a fantastic history at EVO, and I really hope it returns someday.

10: Plup makes a massive upset on Leffen with Samus at EVO 2015
9: S2J goes for the suicide stomp on Westballz at EVO 2016, and then later beats him 2-0 with a double knee read, making S2J the highest placing Falcon in EVO's history (5th)
8: ChuDat makes a 2-stock sopo comeback on HugS on his last stock of the last game to secure his place in top 8 at EVO 2015
7: Swedish Delight makes a legendary upset on Armada at EVO 2018, becoming the first player since Silentspectre in 2010 outside of the top 6 to beat Armada in a set
6: Armada takes the set 3-2 over Hungrybox to secure his first ever EVO win at EVO 2015
5: Leffen makes an incredibly dominant run at EVO 2018, beating Hungrybox 2-1, and then beating Plup and Armada without dropping a game to win his first EVO in spectacular fashion
4: In one of the most legendary moments in Melee history, Axe 4-stocks Silent Wolf with Pikachu in their final game at EVO 2014, taking all of his stocks in less than a minute
3: Wobbles makes the greatest dark horse run in Melee's history at EVO 2013, beating Mango, PPMD, and Hungrybox until finally falling to Mango in grand finals to get 2nd place
2: Hungrybox makes the clutchest losers run of all time at EVO 2016, clutching out game after game, taking out Mango, Plup, and finally Armada in a grueling 10-game set to win his first EVO
1: Mango makes one of the most legendary losers runs of all time at EVO 2013, after losing early to Wobbles, he tears through the losers bracket, taking out PPMD, Armada, and Hungrybox all without losing a single game, until finally beating Wobbles in Grand Finals 6-1 to win the first EVO Melee event since 2007

Melee will still live on and prosper despite the recent news. If there's one thing the Melee community is known for, it's passion for making this party game competitive and exciting to play and watch, perhaps the best accident in video game development.

Every time I see HungryBox win that EVO tournament, I cry. It's such a heartfelt moment, and hoepuflly one day I can be able to experience that feeling of happiness and success that they've worked very hard to achieve.

I hardly doubt it will come true, but I want to be one of the best Yamcha players in DBFZ. Maybe even be one of the top 10 Videl players, but that's almost impossible given her current abilities.
@@garciafever i think it's a simple choice to believe in yourself and become that good, regardless of your natural talent. You just have to make sacrifices elsewhere in life. I think that's why hbox or other players are so emotional when they win a big tournament because those sacrifices can be really painful or exhausting until one epic moment when it FINALLY becomes worth it and they've achieved their goal. Especially someone like hbox who's struggled with choosing melee over a stable and socially acceptable engineering career and endured so much hate from the community. For some people it's better to just dream about being great and play for the love of the game but if you know you wanna be the best, and you choose to make the sacrifices that come with it, nothing can stop you. Only a handful of people will be decisive and choose that path but everybody can do it.

I'm not sad that Melee was cut; if anything I'm glad it stayed for as long as it did. Melee stuck around for more consecutive years than a lot of other different EVO mainstays, so it had to be omitted at some point (and its rules were a bit incongruent with Melee's typical competitive rules anyway). At the very least, Smash still has representation with Ultimate, which has had a really solid competitive start so far.
Side note: Shoutouts to UNIST. I haven't played it myself but it looks rad from what I've seen, and its grassroots history is heavily reminiscent of Melee's scene in the early 2010's. Melee got a huge signal boost from EVO 2013 onward; hopefully UNIST gets similar exposure as this EVO's dark horse.

I agree, Melee stayed for a really long time, and it was only inevitable. Thankfully, the game will live on in other things. It doesn't need EVO anymore, which means it's a good time to finally let it go out and be its own entity. Here's to the game's prosperity for years to come!
And as a side note, I'm really excited for UNIST. Hopefully the game gets the exposure it's deserved for a long time, high praise goes out to the people participating in the tournament, and the community as a whole.
@Base Bass Forte I'd hope he would. The communities should be more accepting of each other, the old and the new under the Smash banner. Salem stirred a pot that he shouldn't have.

@@drifter402 No, but if there was a large gathering of sports at a sports festival that wasn't backed by tradition for years upon years, and had already stated that it's absolutely possible some games get left out of the running due to scheduling issues, and other similar things, and Football just so happened to be on there for years upon years to come, then yes, I'd assume that eventually, it would be inevitable for Football to no longer be in that roster at some point in the future.

A reason that 4-stock that axe did against Silent Wolf was so amazing, is bcus he did it to a player of his level, on one of the biggest stages ever, LIGHTNING FAST.
Silent Wolf had just proven he could stand against Axe by taking a game on Battlefield. But then just a couple good reads, good reactions, and Axe ended the last game in under a minute.
Easily one of the craziest Evo moments. I was floored when I first saw that.
The hungrybox moment was the best to me. Just watching him breakdown with all the work it took to get there gets me ready to run through a wall
I remember the day in high school when I came across the Axe v. Silentwolf video on Facebook of all places. I had never really cared about smash competitively, and I think Smash 4 had just come out on 3ds and my group of friends would all play it together at lunch. I started to show everyone I knew that video, and from then on I was hooked. Melee became more than just a game, it became a part of my life as I became a part of the community and attempted to be just as good as the clips I was watching. Even though I never got to be all too great, Melee is an important part of who I am. It's a real shame to see it not at Evo, but I know it will grow even stronger through the rest of the yearly tournaments. I remember popping off harder than ever when Hbox took that Evo, and all of the other hype moments each year. Melee isn't going anywhere.
There's nothing more beautiful than seeing a player defy fate. That's what it always felt like whenever a player took their first Evo. It felt like they buckled down, and just outplayed what destiny had set before them.
And that's just fucking amazing to watch.
I love this game.
Just to give you guys some context for hbox 2016: Hbox was known as the king of Second Place at Evo for the longest time. He had the biggest block ever getting past second place at Evo. Then, he was going against Armada, who looked like an impassable wall. For each set, Armada was up 2 games, and could've bopped him at any moment. And still, against all odds, he showed why he's called Clutchbox and somehow won it and sealed his first 1st place win at Evo. Dude earned that popoff, 100%

It's astounding how the second installment to a very popular fighting game series is still being played and used within battles and tournaments TO THIS DAY.

We've seen these clips 100 times already but they never get old. As much flaws and gripes we've had with EVO, the hype it brought is irreplacable. We have other majors to make up for it so it is not the end of the world for Melee, but missing out on it leaves a huge hit. I'll miss watching Melee at EVO this year, but I'm still glad we got all the glorious moments from the previous years

Even if unintentional I wanna say seeing Hungrybox’s reaction to winning that set had me watery. You see him through out get beat at other games and then right when he earned a win he just loses it. It’s beautiful this community has something you can never beat. Passion.

I saw this coming! While Melee itself isn't gonna die any time soon, it not being at EVO is the end of an era. Here's to more years in the Melee community, and hopefully Ultimate will continue to grow!

EVO 2018 was fantastic, what a wonderfully high note for Melee's attendance to end. I don't doubt for a second that Melee will return in the future, but for now Ultimate will do fine.

Manga taking off his shirt and throwing it into the crowd will always be the most iconic Melee moment to me. Sure there's wombo combo, but on a huge, professorial level, nothing compares to that moment. Like I can't even play Melee well but I get goosebumps EVERY time I see that good shit.

I was there at EVO for both 2014 and 2018. I am so glad I got to see those moments live.
Hbox's run through EVO 2016 is one of the illest things ever to me. Cuz he was still Mr. 2nd Place back then, and this was the big chance after a lot of wins at smaller (though still huge) tournaments to really solidify his spot at the top. Good lord did he deliver. Also I really love pop offs, any time someone is that emotionally invested into the game I'm hyped up too.
Never before have both communities come together to destroy a common enemy, Salem. Does this make him the most hated Smash player of all time? Maybe. But we must never forget the strength of our community, both Melee and Ultimate! We will rise up and stand strong and help each other when we are down, never forsaking each other in the name of Sakurai himself, let us move forward from this not as a loss and a retreat, but as a victory and a bright future!

FD was probably banned to avoid the chain grab and I kind of like the FOD counterpick from Axe because with a player as technical as Silentwolf the changing heights of the platforms can really do a lot at messing him up.
I haven't played melee since I was a kid but that Pikachu 4 stock was super impressive....what a hero!

I think what you are trying to say here is that this game is so competitive and good that anything could come out of that tournament such as mango winning multiple evo's as well as armada and hbox also that even leffen and plup could win one,this game is truly a masterpiece and i love it to death.
