  • In 1968 my dad and I traveled to Berlin from Frankfurt via Pan Am. Aircraft was Boeing 727-100. The weather was cold, some snow still on the ground, and very few people out and about. We took a bus tour of West Berlin and then transited to East Berlin at Checkpoint Charley. East German border control took about an hour but was uneventful. As I recall we had to convert a small amount of dollars to East German marks, but were supposedly prohibited from leaving the country with those marks. Part of their currency enhancement, I think. I still have several 5-mark bills.
The Berlin Wall was the highlight of our trip. The saddest was to see the fronts of former people’s houses as part of the wall. East Germany was rather dreary, the new buildings without character. Many pre-war buildings, now derelict, were still standing 23 years later. The contrast to West Berlin was notable.
