    Thank you for sharing your insight regarding filtration. I'm a big believer in over filtering, my 210 peacock & hap tank has six filters running. I use an Eheim 2262, Aquatop canister, 2 X lg sponge filters and 2 AquaClear 110's. It may seem like overkill to some but my fish are happy and healthy, plus I have crystal clear water.

    I have a 60 gallon with just the 1 hob tidal 110. I use 2 sponges, large bag of bio rock, 2 carbon bags and 2 polishing pads. I only have about 9 mbunas and 2 small catfish that do a great job of cleaning the bottom. But it always seems that when I add any more fish, 2 and up dying. Check my water parameters and they're all good. My fish don't seem aggressive but I always spot the newbies, after about a week, will stop eating and hide until they die. How are you keeping so many fish without substantial aggression? Was also thinking about a 2nd tidal 110... Should I?

    I am gonna have a ~85 gallon tank with aftican cichlids.
    How many should I keep ?
    How often should I feed ?
    Can I use 2 hob filter ? Or it's necessary to use a canister filter? Or a sponge filter and hob filter.. any combo like that? Is a canister filter must?
    Please tell me guys. Thanks a lot.

    Hi Zenzo.. Excellent video.. you tanks are outstanding. I have over filtration as well on all my tanks. Yes I do believe you can over filter when it's not needed.. but I don't think it hurts to over filter as long as it doesn't blow your fish around. But that's another subject of agitation =D

    I have a 40 gls tank and want to get some mbunas, how may do you suggest I start with and when to add more, you say max 15 fish total in a 40 gls, that's awesome. I have a 36 gls tank with tropical fish, but never had cichlids, looking at your videos and others to learn more!

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  7 років тому +2

      Hi Mert. Thanks for watching. Be sure to subscribe to my channel if you have not yet had a chance. As far as your 40 gallon tank, yes, you can have around 15 or so Mbuna in there if you have really good filtration. i would suggest adding around 4-5 at a time in order to spread out the aggression. If the tank is well established and has a lot of filtration (with beneficial bacteria), you can add more than that at one time.

    •  7 років тому

      Mert Alan
      Mbunas are big fish. I wouldn't put any in a 40.

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  7 років тому +2

      It is definitely on the small end of the spectrum, but some Mbuna do not grow too large, and can thrive in a 40 if it is WELL filtered, and with the right mix of fish. I would recommend starting with at least a 55 gallon tank, but I have seen it done successfully (including by me) in 40s.

    Hi Zenzo, just going through your videos and I noticed at 08:33 those 2 pink peacocks with white lips that looks exactly like mine. Just curious if you know what they are. I picked one up at PetSmart from the assorted peacock tank and I have no clue what it is. Nothing on the internet can be found for a pink peacock with white lips. The fins are also a bit different from other peacocks. Dorsal and anal fins are very low from the front.

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  7 років тому

      IBernE Hey there, and thanks for watching and subscribing! The thing with a 65 gallon tank is that it doesn't have a very large footprint (it's only 36" long). Because of this, you will want to stick with Mbuna if you want to do African cichlids. I would say around 15-20 in a well-filtered 65 would work. There are other options as well, such as small Tanganyikan cichlids.

    Question when it comes to biological media filtration.
    I know that lava rock can hold x amount of surface area & pot scrubbers can hold 2-3 more surface area then there's submerged & wet/dry filters with bio balls or pot scrubbers used.
    Would are pros & cons of using submerged media in a canister compared with a wet dry filter or using K1 media in a fluadized bed?
    I know that K1 media you have the steongest knock off the weaker ones but what does that really mean for average hobbyist?
    Would one filter reduce nitrates from 30ppm to 10ppm ?
    Or does K1 type media keep nitrates at a lower ranges for longer period of time say compared with lava rock or pot scrubbers etc.
    Just curious, anyone?

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  6 років тому +2

      Excellent questions Michael. I don't have any analytical data to support populations of beneficial bacteria, but here is what I can hypothesize:
      In a wet/dry filter, the bacteria is benefited by the oxygenation process due to water trickling over them while exposed to air. In a canister, the water may be less oxygenated, but more surface area is covered because the pump is forcing the water through the media. In a wet/dry setup, the water goes through the path of least resistance, so all surface areas do not make contact with the water.
      In a fluidized system, the water makes contact with all of the surface area of the media due to the motion. In addition, because of the movement, bacteria that is weak or dying are knocked off, leaving the stronger, more robust bacteria on the media to help filter nitrogenus pollutants.
      Of the three, I believe that the fluidized system is the best. This is why you will find them in large, professional systems such as a public aquarium or commercial fishery.

      Tazawa Tanks nice, keep posting your videos, awesome job!

    • @Mikinct
      @Mikinct 6 років тому

      All bio media is good.
      IMO the main reason some prefer K1 media for larger tanks is it really takes a lot of K1 & you need that type of space for it either in a large sump or big plastic diy 55 gallon bin. So its not practical for smaller applications.
      2nd, when typical sponges or ceramic noodles that are static clog faster compared with K1 that's fluidized & in constant state 9f movement knocking off old bacteria & detritus, "almost Self Cleaning" media.
      Other than that its all good.
      I watched a few videos where they used a very coarse sponge in corner of tank using small power head, called it a Matten Filter.
      I've seen Rachael O'leary & others use it, its a fantastic bio media & only clean it "once a year" is priceless in the fish hobby.

  • @stephenbrooks9196

    I have a question for you. Do you define overfiltration by how many filters you have or by how much water your turning and surface area you have?

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  6 років тому +1

      It could be both. It could be having multiple filters on a tank, or having a very large filter that moves a lot of water per hour. I prefer multiple in case one fails.

    • @stephenbrooks9196
      @stephenbrooks9196 6 років тому

      Gotcha.... the reason I asked is because I just started my 75 gallon peacock and Hap tank and I have this sponge filter/ powerhead build that’s doing very well. I’m getting the surface agitation, the biological, and the mechanical. I’m testing the water and everything is good and I have quite a few fish already. I want to add more. I’m like you with the water changes bro. The build is turning a lot of water though. So I had to asked myself was I over filtering. Its actually 2 high density sponges rated at 75 gallons each attached to a power head rated at 600 gph. I have similar set ups in other tanks coupled with hob filters. This is the first time I tried it by itself

    hey bro .can you tell me max number of African cichlid for 55 gallons

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  7 років тому +1

      Sukhdeep Singh There are a couple of things that will determine this. I am assuming that you are doing Malawi Cichlids? Are you going to be stocking Mbuna or Peacocks? A 55 may be a little on the small side for some Peacocks. Definitely too small for Haps. Also, decorations, 3D backgrounds, etc will affect your capacity.
      As far as Mbuna, with out too many rocks, maybe around 23-25 if you have very robust filtration and do high volume and frequent water changes. If you are doing Peacocks, maybe around 17-18. If you have a sump with a decent water volume, you can maybe add a couple of more.

    When picking a filter for a tank, there is 2 factor to consider, flowrate and media container. Overfiltration is just a waste, of electricity, you will only have a fix amoiunt of bacteria base on the load of the tank, if you more biomedia it wont help it, it will only may it harder for the bacteria to get food.

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  5 років тому +2

      Joseph Dy While I agree with your point about flow rate and media, and that extra filtration may be wasteful, One thing that you should consider is if one system fails, or if you have to service one of the filters. Having two filters operating at 50% rather than one at 100% allows for more flexibility and options, including starting another tank and having an established colony of beneficial bacteria in a filter. Great points though! Thanks for watching!

    Sir i watch ur video often and i follow u. But currently i got interested into african chichlids. But i am not from Europe so the big chichlids are Very expensive so i can't afford the big malawi chichlids. So i have to buy 2 inch chichlid. So to make them grow faster i have setup a 3500L canisters filter and also a 6500L per hour sump filter in my 40g breeder Tank. Nd i want to Have 15-20 chichlids in the Tank. So i would feed 4 time a day basically super feeding. So i was thinking is the filteration is enough. I'll be changing the water every 2 days . Ple let me know. 🙂
