      Cheers , I do some time flip the legs or stiles and cut Dominoes from both sides to increase from 14 mil to the larger 18 or so to be honest 14 mil is big enough for most things

    Brilliant looking gates. I'm looking to make my first oak singer gate with a steel frame and an oak clad infill, do you use kiln dried oak for your gates then put it outside? If so How do you avoid the swelling and warping etc when it absorbs the moisture ? Thanks Colin

    • @ManorWood

    Hey man, love your work and designs!
    One question though, as I am building a biig oak gate myself right now:
    How did you level these as they are mounted to the wall like that??
    I also have a set up where I need to hang them from opposing walls and I fear that the connection of the hinges to the wall mounted hardware just sags...
    Any help so much appreciated, searched the whole internet, didnt find anything

    Another lovely addition. Interestingly time wise did the M&T gates take much longer to do than the domino set as you made the massive dominos which must have taken time.
    Just about to make a front door myself with T&G bottom panel. 2mm expansion gap between boards on your gates?

    Great video and similar how i make garage doors however i am lost as to why you use the domino as a mortiser? All that high end Felder gear and yet you dont own a proper mortising machine? Somehow i find that hard to believe. Anyway great video as always and thanks for sharing

    Fantastic quality work but did you use steel fastenings to secure the T&G? (The oak will go black around steel).

  • @dsdragoon

    Wow! Another fantastic gate. At 14:53 it seems that you're putting a slight slope on the top edge of the rails. Is that for shedding water away from the gate? Did you slope the top edges of the braces too? I'm collecting water in the brace corners on my gate. I'll have to fix that. One of the benefits of using the epoxy resin for the adhesive is that it doesn’t contain moisture, so it does not swell the tendons or the mortises but lubricates them instead, which you told us.

    Nice one Andy, Lovely gates, the hinges help set them off, are they made locally?

  • @mqramr
    @mqramr 4 роки тому +1

    Great video Andy. With the hard wax oil finish, do you expect the gates to keep their ‘raw’/golden oak colour (and if so, how often do you think you’ll need to re-apply) or will you let them weather over time to grey/silver?

    • @ManorWood
      @ManorWood  4 роки тому

      I like the natural weathered look, so I won't re oil they will age well

    • @mqramr
      @mqramr 4 роки тому

      Thanks Andy. I made the mistake of varnishing my oak gates - gradually flaked off in small patches which weathered grey. Looked awful in patches. Guessing the oil will wear more evenly. Mine are going to be refinished raw or maybe oil. Lessons learned etc.! Wish I’d come to you to have had them made in the first place (I only live 15 miles away) - they were made with no allowance for expansion and warped dramatically last winter with the wet weather 🙄

    A properly made traditional oak garden gate would not be made this way, simply because after a few year's the glued joints would fail and the gate will sag and fall apart. So sad to see how degraded my trade has become that we have to compete with guys like this.
    Their shortcuts allow them to bid lower but customer's these days are not wise to this hack work and fall for it all the time.
