a truly questionable sentence ... this piece is wonderful, maybe a masterpiece, but what does it mean "one of the first mature"? weren't Perotinus organa mature? Or Machault's Notre Dame Mass? Or Dufay's Flos Florum? just to name a few...
The score and the music as sung sometimes diverge in that some G# are sung while not indicated in the score and sometimes the G naturals are sung as they are.
This is rather common with Renaissance music. Very often accidentals are not indicated in the notes, but were expected to be sung. Often modern performances of the same Renaissance piece are not uniform as to when to sing alterated notes and when not. This phenomenon is called "musica ficta". You can see a video about this here: ua-cam.com/video/6VF6YkCNRyE/v-deo.html
pannonia77 Now my OCD mind is compelling me to go back and review the music bar by bar to see where the ficta are and whether they are causa necessitas or causa pulchritudinis.
Merci pannonia77 de cette mise en ligne du Miserre de Josquin des Prés
You made my day! Thanks pannonia!
An essay by Donald Tovey brought me here. He names this piece "one of the first mature masterpieces in the history of music."

@@emilianoturazzi Good question. A provocative sentence to be sure.
