Mooer original Tender Octaver vs Tender Octaver MKII

  • Short video to compare original and new Tender Octaver directly. I replaced the knobs with fancy ones, but pedals are all original.
    Setting are obvious on the movie, feel free to share your opinions in comments. Personally I find both pedals appealing. Original Tender Octaver has much nicer upper octave and tracks perfectly. Tender Octaver MKII has really nice swell mode and has more solid sub octave. They are surprisingly different, but both are really good pedals.
    Thanks to Tomek Januchta who agreed to help me with setup and played the guitar while i operated the pedals.

    The MkII I just ordered is on it's way, so it was great to find your comparison here for confidence - I'm happy with my choice for an octave pedal. The swell option was what did it for me, choice wise. With demo's sound quality and Mooer's price. Thanks for your vid.

    Great demo comparison!! Thank you for share this!! The Tender Octaver 1st version is a clone of EHX Micro Pog, slight difference on -1 oct .. micro pog is thinner than Tender Octaver 1 on oct down. The 2nd version sounds very different.

    Thanks for a very useful comparison that tells me I shall pay extra for the improved features of MKII. While the original sounds better on upper octave, the lower octave works better in the MKII in my opinion.

    I’m gonna bet that either will serve the purpose for anyone who’s able to make good noises with whatever reasonably adequate tools they have at their disposal

    To be honest I like both. I even think the MKII has some cool voicings that the original doesn't. I can definitely hear a small latency on the MKII but it's very minimal.

    As a bassist, sounds like the original tracks the bass better than the Mk II.

      If you like the sound of the original, look to the EHX POG pedals. The Tender Octave MKI are discontinued because EHX won a copyright lawsuit against them. The code Mooer used in the MKI didn't even bother to delete the EHX POG copyright and legalese from my understanding. That is why they lost the suit and why the MKI is discontinued.
      If you don't like the MKII, it's because it is using different(hopefully original) code not written by EHX.

    I'm so mad I didn't get the first gen. They got sued by ehx because it actually says ehx in the board or somewhere on the circuit. An exact knock off. Whoever got them is lucky! $250 pedal for $30 lol

    Thank you for this demo! It illustrates the fact, that the MKII sounds like crap. The original Tender was an illegal copy of the EHX POG, Mooer just copied the software and lost a lawsuit. That‘s why the first version is hard to find on Ebay. MKII has serious tracking problems, especially on bass.

      I have virtually no tracking issues with the MKII, even on the low end of the b string. I’ve had it on my pedal board for about three years and never had an issue with it. Maybe it’s got something to do with pedal chain order. I’ve never ran it without a compressor in front of it
      - at least, it definitely tracks better than an OC-2

    • @evol_si_dog
      @evol_si_dog 10 місяців тому

      That being said, the +1 octave definitely sounded a bit more natural on the original pedal in this video

    • @janstella9477

      @@evol_si_dog The sound always depends on the equipment being used. I sold my MKII, otherwise I'd make a vid to demonstrate the tracking issues. Though I have to say that I sometimes play powerchords on my bass. The MKII cannot cope with it, especially with my passive JB. My active PB did a slightly better job. But compared with my POG and especially with my POG2 it is glitchy. But I have to agree, the OC-2 is even worse. :-)

    Does it do "Polyphonic" like the BOSS OC-3 / OC5 ? i.e. on a guitar, can we set the Mooer Octaver to pick only the low E and A strings to sound even lower? (Not interested in octaves in unison).

    Is the tracking not very good on the MkII? I thought the tight mode was supposed to improve it, any help would be great, deciding whether to buy the mark 1 or 2

    Mooer really messed up this pedal. The original was much better specially for bass to simulate a guitar (Royal Blood Style). I had both and the MKII was a huge disappointment!

    • @Jonathan_Doe_
      @Jonathan_Doe_ 5 років тому +9

      danimourinho They had to change the software because the original version contained an exact copy of the copyrighted software from a micro pog and EHX sued them.
      That’s why the original version sounds so good, it’s basically a micro pog.

      Because EHX sued the fuck out of them for stealing their design and mooer is a crappy company that cant come up with anything on their own.

      @@3star2nr That is obviously not true, Mooer is leading digital effects company right now and it's beating crap out of their competition delivering us world class algoritms at bargain price. They invested heavily in R&D in past few years, and this investment paid off. I think i have never seen anything like that: they really started as typical chinese copy shop, delivering well known pedals at half the price, pretty much same model as all chinese pedal companies 10 years ago. Now they are completely new company.

      @@jarosawlipszyc4820 that's great for them... Still doesnt invalidate the point I was making. That they stole their design from EHX got sued and had to create a reissue...
      They didnt come up with a design on their own. That was the point i was making...
      If they've since turned a page great for them... I dont plan on buying any of their products. I dont even fault them for stealing and copying the design...
      Ultimately consumers choose how best to spend their money. I personally believe in supporting the small mom and pop companies that did the original design than the people who leached off them...
      I prefer to have less junk and to focus on acquiring high quality gear and to feed the people who put in the time and effort to design and build it.
      Especially when alot of these original companies are run by fellow american musicians.
      Do i pay more? Absolutely. But a family in California or ohio is getting a paycheck because I made a better purchase decision

    • @jarosawlipszyc4820
      @jarosawlipszyc4820  2 роки тому +2

      @@3star2nr that was exactly my point: they transformed themselves from shameless copiers to company which beats the crap out of Americans using their own, original, chinese born R&D. Mooer multieffects are way ahead of competition, not a cheap knock-offs. Which is, if you think about it, pretty astonishing. This is also nothing new: Korean industry did it in 80's. Japanese industry did exactly that in the 60's. And, wait for it, American industry did just that in late 40's, stealing as much know how as possible from Germans. Operation Paperclip, Werhner Von Braun, moon landings, you know the story.
      BTW, families in Shenzen need a paycheck too. One could argue, that they need it much more than rich americans...
