This happens in the NYC Subway because the GD trains don't show up for half an hour or more during "rush hour" (prepandemic) so everyone is trying to squeeze on.
Why not? Besides it looks better for the metro. At my city theres no platform doors and I always fear that some dude with his head unscrewed might push me on the track just before the train reaches the platform 😨

the ttc can't do this because they can't get the trains to line up with the doors reliably
