Instead of stuff peeling away, James smashes through a rep of a mental block, then has to confront a subjective object of disease and stains (the shit toilet), and upon doing so, his mind then shifts the apartment into a phenomenological reflection of his despair over realizing Mary's illness/ cancer is terminal. The grime sticking around likely was a 'surface', but it goes away, implying he's faced a discrete experience from the past.
Great video, man. Love the direct, thorough comparisons. I adored the original game and it became one of my all time favorites back when I played it on my ps2 (I still have a copy & Ps2). Unpopular opinion but I think overall, the remake is the superior game. The visuals, especially the otherworld sections, are incredible. Same with the sound design. Better puzzles, better dialog is many parts.... Aside from bad PC performance, my biggest gripes are -too much combat in latter half of the game. Many times I just wanted to soak in a moment only to have it interrupted by an annoying mannequin -not a fan of some of the remixed music. The standouts on the original score are way better -the letter reading at the end of the original is unbeatable. It's perfect. The new endings are also very well done and the "Stillness" ending is now my favorite, going with the popular opinion that James leaves the car and decides to live his life like Mary wished.

I'm wondering if Bloober forgot they were writing in an ENTIREly different genre, cause that's literally our Egg code in every ImmSim (which this isn't) Wondr if I caught that on OBS, was a hoot.
I Heard from everyone only good reviews, and from what i can see you loved It too, but i don't want to spoil myself top much (with the remake) so i can't Watch This video now, ill come back tho (i already know its going to be a banger of a review)
