As a child I would observe the little black ants along the sidewalk. I knew they were intelligent little creatures that communicated with one another. I knew that I could wash them away with the garden hose, step on them, or poison them. They, on the other hand, could not know that I was anything but another feature of their environment like a plant, tree, or a rock. Much later in life I saw a movie made from the Outer Limits series called the Sand Kings, it resonated with my childhood musings about the intelligence of these amazing little creatures where I wondered if I was like a God to them. I wondered if our God was above us in the same way.
Philosophically this makes a lot of sense, especially considering that the Universe itself is a complexity engine and the most complex thing we could imagine is something that is infinitely complex like an all powerful deity.
When I was young I believed in God. I shed tears and prayed to him. I grew older and my beliefs faded... not quickly. I believed less and less until I decided to place my faith in intelligent man. I believe in something greater than us, and I believe there are forces we don't yet understand and maybe even life beyond our comprehension. But I don't think the answer lies in a book, or church. I don't believe in a 50 foot bearded guy in the clouds. God is a goal, not an origin. We look for it in ourselves, and in our universe. But not as one being, but moreso something to push us further.
My friend committed suicide because he couldn't get himself into a top rated university. Ray tell me if really after singularity that we can download courses instead of going to university and be jobless.
I'm so sorry for your loss it, fucken sucks how students pinned with so much soul crushing debt. I don't know how to wright it or put it in to words but I know loss of someone special to you but carry on not just for but for friend. Remind everyone of how alive he was and what he ment to you because your friend will live on through you. It makes sense to me that we're all god and consciousness is an illusion created by language and a self-reflective brain. What would you do if you were a god? Would you create a universe to sit and watch/control like a giant doll house, or would you play all the parts yourself in one big dramatic epic. It makes sense that we all have different perceptions, as it would be boring to just be one being, and death keeps everything fresh and exciting. If there is this a god with infinite power and eternal existence it would have to keep itself from getting bored. Truth is, life is about the experience not the narrative.
