    Do a screw like that on the top and bottom of the seal, so you can pry from one side, then another. Will come out easier.

    Ver cool idea with the PVC pipe, I have plenty of scrap PVC laying around here and will be using my miter saw to get the even cuts/edges and a little sandpaper to smooth them out so to not have sharp burs. Thanks for the video!

    Nice Tip.
    So installing spark plug tube seals can be done with a bolt and washers on a removed valve cover instead of buying a bearing/seal install tool. it just takes longer but cost a lot less. And here i was going to use a socket and hammer to drive it home. I like this better.

    Good video, had to do this myself several times. I use petroleum jelly for assembly lube on seals, o-rings and most engine parts with great success. I also like to check the inner seal surfaces with a dental pick to make sure I haven't rolled the inner surfaces.

    Put those seals in the freezer a few hours before installing. Quickly install them while they're still cold and they will drop in like butter.

      I just did the freezing cv axle seal a couple days ago, I just stuck mine in a handful of snow in 12 f. temps we are having right now, I knew about it a long time ago, and yes it does work. When you chill metal it shrinks, therefore allowing the seal to slip into the housing much easier than when it is warm.

    Thanks for this. I’m going to try it on my pressure washer oil seal. Can I use red & tacky grease around the seal?

      Automotive bearing grease works fine. I don't know about red and tacky though.

    Nicely done on the install. Just what I was looking for. Replacing mine I rushed it by using PVC and a hammer. Mounted in crooked, ruining the new seal. Now ordering a. new one and will press it in there s way. Thanks for the good video.

    Good video but very frustrating watching you work with one hand while the other is operating the camera, especially the one handed screwdriver routine. Possibly a small tripod for the camera ?

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  Рік тому

      Thanks for the constructive criticism. I have always used a tripod but these must have been situations where I couldn't for some reason. I agree, one hand on tool and the other holding camera does not result in a good steady shot.

    Put the screw in... make a hook tool like a claw hammer has... insert tool in a slide hammer... one bump and easy out.

    • @richardrichardsen6611
      @richardrichardsen6611 6 років тому

      Most folks don't have a slide hammer or a trunion puller...but. Use a longer screw and after threading it in use an adjustable wrench or a claw hammer that can span the shaft of the screw but not clear the head. Give it a snap upward and out comes the seal.

      That's usually a head gasket, which requires an extensive tear down of the engine.

      No, a seal can't fall off. Make sure it's oil. That may be brake fluid or power steering fluid.

    how can you replace a rear main on a v8 with the transmission still in.?....is there a tool for that?.lol

    • @GotScout
      @GotScout 7 років тому

      You just pour seal removal fluid in your trans and let it warm up for 20 minutes. Shut off engine for 10 minutes. Start it up and run it 3 times for exactly 5 minutes each... then it will be gone.

    Does everyone lube the entire seal. I put lithium on the entire seal on my Generac engine. And it still leaks. It's just a hair beyond flush. It's even as I love-tapped in with a plastic pipe.

    • @TheOriginalMechanic
      @TheOriginalMechanic  8 років тому

      I don't think a little grease would make a seal leak. I would wonder if your seal was machined wrong. You may want to try another.
