The studio version was done for the TV show "Salem", created with Tyler Bates. I don't have any insider info but I think it was done specifically for the show and maybe to get him the role on the show. One rare time he allowed his music to be used on a tv show. I also don't think anyone who was involved in the production of the song was involved in live shows, or that the same musicians were in both. The song is AWESOME either way (so is the show).
Personally I would agree and rather hear better music than theater. But most of his fans perfer the playing of that freak show role than doing the lines better. Sad, but undeniably true. If he ever put out a collection of songs that left the shock and role playing out entirely and just focused on making great music - I think it would be one of the greatest musical works the world has ever seen. Sadly though I think he (like me) doesn't feel the world is worth getting his best works.
