This aircraft has a special place in my heart because my Grandfather was a flight engineer on Short Stirlings in WWII. You've done a fantastic job of building this kit, I have the newer Italeri kit but plan on getting the Airfix kit as well.
Lovely job you've made of this aircraft. Despite a less than favourable history of being something of a deathtrap for its crews, I've always thought the Short Stirling was a good looking aircraft. I'm about to commence building this kit myself, after seeing you video. Well done!
Yes, I too, was modelbuilder (long, long, lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng time ago) of model-aircraft and other military vehicals in my youth halfway in the seventies. I too, built this aircraft and also had the mentioned specific problems with the landing-gear. My father gave me a helping hand and helped me to solder a much more secure and stable substitude for the landing-gear ( with the exception of the wheels). Your model looks beautiful.
I would imagine it is still available on sales websites such as ebay. I am surprised that Airfix has not yet made a new tool of the Stirling. It would probably sell quite well.. :@)
Wondered why the wingspan seemed too short in proportion to the fuselage and discovered that when designed, it was part of the RAF specification that the wingpan allowed entry to the standard RAF hangars then in service. So there we are!
Yes, unfortunately it made a promising bomber not quite as good as was to have been expected.. sometimes trying to save money can turn out to be more of a waste than a benefit.
Great model!!!:)About 30 years ago I built a Halifax, unfortunately it's lost, on my continuous movings....... I still remember it... Many regards from Barcelona
Nice job looks beautiful! :) When my dad was young in the 60/70's he build models and he painted his canopys with a nail. And the results was awesome and he got sereval models left=)
@bruce3371 Thank you.. I will try and stick to the theme as and when I can, but my next 3 or 4 builds will NOT be a bomber or a nightfighter, as I HAVE to build a couple of Spits for a club display in May, and I'm also building a jet right now that my son gave me for Christmas.. :) I also want to build an armoured vehicle or a tank before too long.. :)
A great build of a classic kit! I had this in the 1980s when I was a lad, gonna get another for the pile!... I Hope Revell or Airfix decide to retool an updated Stirling kit... and Hampden..and defiant.... etc!!!!
Brilliant build, it looks great :) I was thinking about getting this kit but never really bothered, I think I will now :) Thanks for the info too, never looked into the Stirling before so I learnt a lot :)
I'm happy to see that you sanded the rivets to tone them down a bit. Without re scribing it's necessary to leave a hint of them to prevent it from looking toy like. Mine is still unbuilt, but that is the way I will also deal with the problem. Your canopy looks surprisingly clear. I know they're quite thick so I have a bought some vacuum formed replacements for the clear parts. You've done an outstanding job on this ancient yet appealing kit. Wouldn't it be nice to see Airfix re-tool it
@AlanMartinNala Thak you.. Yes, it is definetely my largest kit, together with the Vulcan... :) The Stirling had a large bomb bay, but it wasn't adaptable to carry different kind of bombs, like the Lancaster could..
My Dad began his tour of ops on Stirlings with 622 Squadron at Mildenhall, changing to Lancasters after they had completed 2, I met his pilot who reckoned the Stirling could out-turn the Hurricanes used in fighter affiliation exercises. He also mentioned a pilot who stood a Stirling on its tail and let it slide backwards, something I have seen Russian fighters do at displays, but a Stirling! It must have been some sight.
I always use masking tape (Tamiya 10mm) which helps getting a straight line.. and I do the decals using Johnsons Klear Floor Polish as a setting solution, and then varnish over the whole model with a matt varnish (or whatever finish I desire) which helps to blend in the decals as well.. :) Klear is not available any more byt 'Pledge' floor polish is similar, I believe.. :)
I had this kit quite some time ago, as a little sideline to the main model I found the inclusion of the David Brown Taskmaster tractor a nice touch, although a more accurately tooled version of it is now included in Airfix's RAF Bomber Resupply set.
@ourmanroy Thank you.. I just wish I had bought the etched brass and / or resin detail set for the cock-pit interior, that was issued around the same time or shortly after I did this model.. but I didn't know.. :) It would have been nice with a more detailed interior.. :)
@RayyRayyx I haven't built the tractor yet, but I will do later, as I will use it forsome diorama or other.. Not with the Stirling, though.. :) Enjoy the build.. just take your time.. :)
Very Nice Video, informative and well composed and very nice end result too. I hope my Short Stirling will come out somewhere near as good as yours, great skill and attention to detail, well done, good job.
@petrwarry72 That is the Halifax.. will use some photos and / or footage of the Hendon Halifax when I get round to building my model of one.. :) I hope to get some better photos / footage in May, when hopefully I'll make it to the show again.. The pictures I got earlier are a bit too dark..
@gamerdude223 I already have the kit and it will get built this year, at some point.. I may do a US bomber next, though.. not sure! But before I do any other bomber I have to do a couple of Spitfires for a club display in May.. :0)
@chuckers08 29 Dark Earth and 116 US Dark Green.. And yes, there will indeed be a Lancaster (Revell) and also a Halifax (Airfix), maybve a Wellington (Airfix).. I do have some other things I must do first, so I will temporariliy abandon the theme for the next few builds.. :)
@fmcVlad The kit is from 1966!!! :) But it was actually quite an enjoyable build, and I may get another one to build a different version, either the early B I, with a diffrent gun turret, or a post war transport version.. :) If you can find a kit I strongly recommend you getting one.. :)
I was thinking of leaving the bay open but decided against it as there will be more things that can break and come off, i.e bay doors and the ordnance within.. so thought it best to have it all closed up.. :) Glad you liked my effort anyway.. :)
@BasicModelling i find wet and dry to be a once only use, I agree it looses it's touch real fast bring back emery cloth, maybe you still have it on the UK, I cam assure you it's not here loved the little gun turrets, i like amodel with little people in it
I had this model for my birthday. I finished it in August. It took me a week to build it cause i wanted it in good condition. I got this kit in august. It is October now. It is a good looking model. Also it is a new version of the stirling by airfix.
@corymike Filler is not expensive. Filler is normally known as 'filler', or 'putty', & comes in different grades, i.e very fine or coarser. I use the fine filler always, but if you need to fill big holes its best to use the coarse filler first. As for painting, I always paint the smaller details first, especially if it's things I can't reach properly after assembling the kit.. sometimes I paint the parts before gluing, sometimes I build the cockpit first and then paint, it depends on the kit..
Another great vid, don't see many Stirlings even at the model shows, its not one of the seys bombers in people's minds. A nice start to the modelling year.
In short: stirling work. The top half resembles the Sunderland, as they share some basic fuselage elements. Also the plane seems to have turrets syndrome ;) Bomb bays in the wing, unique. Must be fun painting such a big kit and seeing the chunks fall into place. Perhaps I will make a foam mosquito, I have some decent plans for a paper model. Pinecone exhaust (reminiscent of CAC boomerang and beaufighter) and big undercarriage are impressive. Shiny too!
@adelski68 Yes, they were the pictures I saw that mede me want to build it as a Russian version.. However, I still need the photographic evidence as to wether the guns really were removed or not.. :) Thanks for looking it up, though.. :)
@PeteHyde989 Thanks.. I just did mine straight out the box.. it is a good kit, considering its age.. and you have very little choice if you want to build one in 1/72 anyway.. :)
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH Welcome back to the hobby... :) :) It's never too late.. I hope you enjoy your builds, I will build the Revell Lancaster later on, and probably the Airfix Halifax too.. as well as a B-24 and a B-17, as I'm trying to work my way through some heavise this year.. :)
I used to have a building review of the Airfix 1/72 Dambusters Lanc on my old channel.. but for reasons too complicated to mention here in my reply, I had to make it private, and before I could remake and repost it my computer at the time went 'boom, fizz, blip' and I lost the original raw video alltogether.. But I have a Revell 1/72 Lancaster half done up in the loft, I will post a video when it's completed some time maybe later this year. :) The review video is partly made already.. :)
I need to try this but I'm a 1/48 scaler LOL I love details and its much easier for me to get the cockpit - but bombers I may have to stick with 1/72...not sure yet see how it goes :)
Italeri have announced that they will be releasing a new tool Stirling in 2013. However, expect the price to be around £40.00 (in line with their recently released new tool Sunderland).
@Simona050 Well, it should please you to know that all the kits you mentioned (more or less) are still out there.. The Wellington is a different kit these days, but the Lancasters, the Halifax and Stirling are all the same, as is the B-29 even though I'm not sure if that kit is still on the market right now.. I'm going to build the Airfix Halifax later this year, but when I get round to building the Lancaster, it will be the Revell kit.. :)
@chancerNW The kit has a bit of a bad reputation, but if you bear in mind that it is a kit that is around 45 years old, then you have to expect a few problems building it.. as it happens mine went together just fine, I had to use some filler but that was no surprise! :)
@2007Colonial I'm sure it does... but I couldn't get my hands on any! I have however invested in some vacform canopies et.c for my old Airfix Blenheim, I built one OOB before and it was not my best hour... :)
@strizhi I'm not sure if you can get the Stirling in 1/48... but if you can it will be MASSIVE... :) I build 1/48 from time to time, and plan to do a P-47 D in that scale later in the summer.. and a Spitfire later in the year.. :)
@RayyRayyx Nope, you have to get your own.. fishing line, cotton thread (not recommended), stretched sprue or whatever you prefer.. I use Aeroclubs elasticated thread.. :)
what number humbrol did you use for the dark brown and the green, p.s. seeming as your theme is bombers and night fighters, i take it that there could be an Avro lancaster waiting in the wings, would love to see a vid of that if so. Cheers.
@MilitaryAircraft101 Great choice.. I haven't yet got a Sunderland, but it is on the list.. This coming month I will build about 5 Spitfires, then I'm going back to my 'Bombers & Nightfighters' theme.. The next bomber built is likely to be a Liberator.. :) Hoping to go to Hannants this coming Friday, and if they have any in stock, I will pick up an Academy 1/72 B-17 G Flying Fortress.. :)
@carmium I'm not good at weathering aeropnes, so tend to leave them unweathered, rather than ruining them.. It's much easier to weather tanks and armoured vehicles.. :) Weathering is always popular, amongst those who can do it good, but there's a growing number of modellers out there who like to have their models looking 'clean'. just like me..
I think i read somewhere that the Stirling had a service ceiling of around 12.000 feet, and therefore usually took the brunt of the punishment of ground fire etc. It probably also were more susceptable to enemy fighters because of this..made up the entire undercarriage and bomb bay over a decade ago, and the rest is still to be assembled. This kit will probably be around for a 100 years!!!
@flubug1 I paint thin layers, normally two coats of the lighter colour.. in this case the dark earth, followed by one coat of the darker colour.. in this case US dark green.. I prefer this method, as it is much easier to get it even, and you don't get gaps between the different colours.. :)
very good work. 5 stars. please could you make some tutorial how to paint wheels, because everytime I try to paint them I do something wrong and they look bad.
Hello from the U.S.A. I noticed when doing the paint you did a coat of the brown over all the wings. I was curious how you're able to paint over the brown without the paint getting too think when doing the next color over that first coat. This isnt to criticize but for my own reference when doing my models. I recently came across your youtube page and enjoy all your aircraft model videos. Thanks !
I always use Humbrol enamels.. and for a standard British bomber camo like this I use Humbrol 29 'Dark Earth', Humbrol 116 'US Dark Green' and Humbrol 33 'Black'.. Humbrol 78 'Interior Green' for the cockpit and that's about it, I think.. You may need a suitable metallic Humbrol paint for the cowling rings on the engines as well, can't remember which one I used there.. Hope this has helped you some.. :)
nice work I've just got the kit and needed some guidance and inspiration as normally I do armour but suddenly have acquired some aircraft this one from a junk shop selling it off from someones old stash...£20 including the humbrol paints and brushes..
Saw the finished article on Britmodeller :) Very impressive! Do you think replacing the kit guns with quickboost ones would have made any difference to the finished kit?
This aircraft has a special place in my heart because my Grandfather was a flight engineer on Short Stirlings in WWII. You've done a fantastic job of building this kit, I have the newer Italeri kit but plan on getting the Airfix kit as well.
Thank you for this video build of a great old Airfix kit , your final still pics realy are a 'Sterling' effort !!!!
Wow, I have this one in my closet. I pull it out every now and then, think about building it, then shudder and put it back! You did a terrific job!
Lovely job you've made of this aircraft. Despite a less than favourable history of being something of a deathtrap for its crews, I've always thought the Short Stirling was a good looking aircraft. I'm about to commence building this kit myself, after seeing you video. Well done!
Nice to see someone doing airfix on here. Me and my dad are abou to embark on a plane each, so it's nice to have you as a reference :)
Yes, I too, was modelbuilder (long, long, lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng time ago) of model-aircraft and other military vehicals in my youth halfway in the seventies. I keep learning about airplanes I never heard of before just from watching this channel... I also approve of the relaxing music selection :)
i built this aircraft in 1967....it was a great kit for a 14 year old but i didnt have paints.
I would imagine it is still available on sales websites such as ebay. I am surprised that Airfix has not yet made a new tool of the Stirling. It would probably sell quite well.. :@)
@@BasicModelling yes, you are right. nice work on the model, btw...
Awesome thanks for commenting back, I love your videos...

Yes, unfortunately it made a promising bomber not quite as good as was to have been expected.. sometimes trying to save money can turn out to be more of a waste than a benefit.
Thank you for sharing! Just won one of these - for U.S. $8!! I will try to do it justice when I build it!
Great model!!!:)About 30 years ago I built a Halifax, unfortunately it's lost, on my continuous movings.......

building an airfix stirling at the moment.what a dream it would be if it were available in 1/48!

Beautiful work. I remember tackling this kit about 40 years ago, I am sure yours came out a lot better than mine!
I built one of these years ago. When I bought mine it came with a RAF tractor and a pair of bomb trolleys.
You bring such life to a model!
A great build of a classic kit! I had this in the 1980s when I was a lad, gonna get another for the pile!... I Hope Revell or Airfix decide to retool an updated Stirling kit... and Hampden..and defiant.... etc!!!!

OMG! 20 pounds? I paid $2.49 Canadian for this kit back in the late '60's. You did a great job on it. Mine was in pale blue plastic.
Superb model well done, I need to learn filling and sanding skills from you.
For its age (47 years old) it was a real good kit. And you finished the Stirling very nice although I would have preferred to let the bomb bays open.
@Stanier8F Thank you.. I use Squadron WHITE putty and Vallejo putty mainly, as I find they work best for me... :)
I had this kit quite some time ago, as a little sideline to the main model I found the inclusion of the David Brown Taskmaster tractor a nice touch, although a more accurately tooled version of it is now included in Airfix's RAF Bomber Resupply set.

i built a stirling as well! i love your model👍👌 very neat paint job!
Great Airplane, nice Job, Rob
I used to have a building review of the Airfix 1/72 Dambusters Lanc on my old channel.. but for reasons too complicated to mention here in my reply, I had to make it private, and before I could remake and repost it my computer at the time went 'boom, fizz, blip' and I lost the original raw video alltogether.. @2007Colonial I'm sure it does... but I couldn't get my hands on any! I have however invested in some vacform canopies et.c for my old Airfix Blenheim, I built one OOB before and it was not my best hour... :)

@RayyRayyx Nope, you have to get your own.. fishing line, cotton thread (not recommended), stretched sprue or whatever you prefer.. I use Aeroclubs elasticated thread.. :)
@tankman13p66 Thank you.. it was not as bad a kit as I thought it would be.. I enjoyed the build, and wouldn't mind making another one.. :)
See the Lancaster MKII they're coming out with later this year ?, brand new never been released before as far as I know.
@Catattafish Thank you VERY much... :) :)

@deathwarmedup73 Yes, Airfix has only recently started to change their box arts, on the new 'red' boxes... :)
how did u get the paint on the glass so perfect at 5:36?
@MilitaryAircraft101 Great choice.. I haven't yet got a Sunderland, but it is on the list.. @BasicModelling As as intresting suggestion maybe do a Revell Go-229 whit nightfighter camo? And some radio antennas stolen from other kits?
Nice vid and also nice model of the Short Stirling .
Let us always remember the brave men who piloted these craft through hostile skies to defend freedom for their own and others...
This the only stirling kit--I have built two.
My dad was in MG squadron and this kit has these decals

@MrCrossbiker Thank you very much.. :) :)
@Bloodrin79 It's definetely worth getting, I think.. :) It has a bit of a bad reputation, but I had no major trouble putting it together.. :)
@EssieP No, it was filmed at a museum (Framlingham) just outside Ipswich.. :)
nice video, nice plane and nice misic.
do you re use the pieces of wet and dry paper after they've dried?
Hello from the U.S.A. I noticed when doing the paint you did a coat of the brown over all the wings. I was curious how you're able to paint over the brown without the paint getting too think when doing the next color over that first coat. This isnt to criticize but for my own reference when doing my models. I recently came across your youtube page and enjoy all your aircraft model videos. Thanks !
Hi can I ask which paints you used as I recently bought one which had no paints with the box and I am unsure which ones to buy
Thanks, Currently building it now, but i'll post a finished image
@Virlando2 I thought the Moonlight sonata worked well with a bomber used for night raids.. :)
nice work I've just got the kit and needed some guidance and inspiration as normally I do armour but suddenly have acquired some aircraft this one from a junk shop selling it off from someones old stash...£20 including the humbrol paints and brushes..
@thousandson556 I think you should.. it is a classic WWII bomber, which saw a great variety of use.. :)
@airfixman1234 You can do, but they go blunt quite quickly.. sometimes I keep a few old pieces to use when I want a supersmooth finish.. :)
Saw the finished article on Britmodeller :) Very impressive! Do you think replacing the kit guns with quickboost ones would have made any difference to the finished kit?
@adelski68 Thank you.. it was good fun!! :) Easier than I thought considering the age of the kit.. :)
