Cookstown Main Street The Longest and Widest or Any Town

  • We have driven through Cookstown once or twice in the past but remarkably we have never before set foot in the town! Here is what we discovered, ( backed up by a wee bit of research ), when we did. We need to return some day because time did not permit us to investigate the lower quarter of the town. Come and check the place out for yourselves and be sure to stay in the fabulous Tullylagan Country House Hotel when you do.
NB 2023 I'm not sure whether Tullylagan House is still operating as a hotel.

Been going to Cookstown for the last 15 year’s a d I have made some wonderful friends there. Usually come over to the Cookstown 100, North West 200, Armoy Road Races and the Ulster GP. The Belfast House has become my second home as I have stayed there over 40 times. Thank you Tom for this video I have enjoyed it very much. Your videos just take me back I just love the place

What a lovely downtown! Very well designed and scenic. I’m just watching the traffic as well trying to figure out if I could reverse my mind and drive in it. I’m not sure I wouldn’t end up in an accident my first day. Great job giving the tour, Tom! What an interesting place to visit. I’d have a pint with you at The Cartwheel. That looks like a good one. I’m not much one for bars now, but there was a time. Anyway, Cookstown looks traditional and alive. I like it. Thanks for the great video. As you say, Good Stuff!!

I have driven in France and Spain Greg and it does take a bit of getting used to driving on the other sude. I drove in a car in Minorca sitting on the other side with the gear stick on my right wow, and on the other side of the road! That was scary! Driving on the other side through Milan italy was the worst. It was a mad place to drive! Cars coming horns blasting from every direction and me on the wrond side. I was terrified! I drove in Florida way decades ago when the kids were small. I was in a brand new hire car automatic. After the first day or two it was fine. The Cartwheel was full of character. It was probably very old but i couldn't get a date on it. Remarkably for someone who appreciates old pubs I don't take alcohol at all! I would have a wee cup or tea there! lol

Tom McClean Positive Belfast Isn’t it funny how different cultures drive? What is and isn’t acceptable on the roads in a given area? You mentioned your experience in Milan. That sounds horrible! The worst I’ve experienced was in Houston. They drive so fast on the freeway. 80-90 mph at times and that is the flow of traffic! They watch too much NASCAR down south. I just wouldn’t drive in Chicago. Way too much traffic. Here in the Midwest, we follow the posted speeds. Sure there are speeders, but they are the exception rather than the rule. As for alcohol, I don’t drink either. I quit when I was 40. I had had my fun and was tired of it. There are very rare exceptions to that. Being in a genuine, historic Irish pub would certainly qualify. I’d guess it has been two years or more since I’ve even had a beer. It was fun when I was young, these days I’m just happy to be a homebody and I value my health.

I couldn't believe what we witnessed in Paris Greg. There was a space in a busy restaurant street but it was slightlt too small to park in. A guy drove up and with his motor nudged one car forward and the other back and got in that space. Almost every car including all the new ones had scraped bumpers and doors. It was amazing.
You mention Houston. I did a video with a Houston connection a while back. We have a Drive near us called Houston Drive. It is named after the Houstons of America. Houston Texas was named after Sam Houston whose family relatives had come over to Ulster from Scotland in the 17th Century Plantations.

I came from a home that had no alchol so i never developed a taste. For 4 years I lived in amongst hard drinking rugby lads who vowed they would soon have me drinking. I never bothered though. A lot of our friends drink wine at weekends. I don't enjoy it so don't do it. Tanya's dad who died this year in Feb and was an alcoholic. He quit drinking decades ago and the family thus remained happy together.

The building on Chapel street is actually a court house which until very recently still had all of the troubles era security fencing around the perimeter. The building you are referring to is actually on Molesworth street. The town's old station is now used by Cookstown Hockey Club, the platform complete with rails is still there today.

Oh dear Pierce, many thanks for taking the time to put me right. coming from Belfast I suppose it was easy to jump to the wrong conclusion. I would have loved to have seen the old platform. Cookstown has a wealth of old interesting buildings. Best wishes rom Belfast.

The dreadful vandalism of removing of the train made things 100 times worse. Now we have massive lorries driving through quaint small villages. Then this is usually followed by road builders ripping up vast swathes of countryside to facilitate bypasses! Oh dear!

The high street looks very much like Frances street in ards. Our mum had family who lived in cookstown many years ago. A cousin worked in a butcher's shop there. Can't tell you what his nickname was as is wasn't very nice.
