Hi everyone - It's come to my attention that there has been someone masquerading as myself, responding to some comments here with a link to a Telegram chat to win a prize from me. THIS IS A SCAM, I am not holding a contest, nor do I have a Telegram account. PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THESE MESSAGES!!
It's happening on a lot of my videos, I'm taking steps to remove them manually, but as I have 162 videos, it will take some time. If you do run across a suspicious comment, I would appreciate you letting me know at info@dronebotworkshop.com.
    Thanks!

I bought a robot that comes with couple of JSN-SR04T inside. Today I met a problem that the JSN-SR04T was not working properly.
Luckily I found your video, fully explained everything. And I understand very well about the sensor now. Saved me much time from looking across massive amount of information to solve the puzzle.

sound travels much faster in the water, so that would definitely affect the sensor's ability to get responding signals. At a close distance it is possible that the sensor would get the response before the signals have all stopped sending.

      hi Bill,
I made a water tank level sensor with the SR04T , it has worked well for a year now in a 25,000L plastic tank.
As the tank top is a dome I have an approx. 50cm air space to deal with the min. distance .
I mounted the sensor in an waterproof ABS box together with a small arduino, I send the data via a RS422 interface so you can have a display
      Up to 500M away.
The box was mounted over a 50mm hole in the top of the tank.
One problem I encountered was condensation overnight. ( a drop formed on the sensor what gave a false reading)
The solution was to mount a 12V incandescent lightbulb inside the box and power it with 9V what makes the lamp last forever.
This solved the problem. I made 2 different read out units one for the pump shed and one for inside the house.

@@ray_glaze these sensors don’t work in a narrow tube ( echo of the wall) maybe a long pipe with a pressure sensor on top would work for you.

      @@johnnz4375 Interesting idea.
The pipe in question is 6 to 8" ID. Since I haven't found the range I need, so I have not worried about the spread. I did give some thought to interference with the pipe and wiring.
The well is capped, but not sealed. I'll have to think about how pressure responds to a change in water level.
I also need to broaden my search of sensor types.
      Thanks for your reply.

Your video has an excellent explanation of the theory and operation of both the JSN-SR04T & A02YYUW sensors. I had an application where I needed sensors to monitor the level of solution in two hypochlorite tanks in a water system. The JSN-SR04T has a "blind spot" that is too long to the application. I originally used two HC-SR04 sensors, but I was worried about the sensors getting wet. I found versions of the A02YYUW sensors that worked using the same pulse width modulation as the HC-SR04 so they were a 'plug and play' substitution. The sensors have worked for over two years with the only problem happening when workmen accidently 'disconnected one of the sensors (broke the wire). I believe that there are versions of the A02YYUW available that operate on PWM and could be directly substituted for the HC-SP04.

Thanks a lot, your projects are something which I always look for. In one of my earlier projects, I have waterproofed HC-SR04, fitted it on top of my 1000 litres water tank to find the distance between the top of the water surface and sensor. Further by putting the dimensions of my tank in the code, I calculate the exact volume of water available in my tank and using automation, turn ON / OFF the water pump to maintain the water level. Furthermore, I also calculate the flow rate of incoming and outgoing water in litre/min to know the consumption. The project also sends imp notifications on my mobile. Surprisingly the project is still working great.

There's a problem with the A02YYUW sensor if you're trying to meausure a fluid level in a 150mm PVC pipe. The sound reflections confuse the sensor and it gives the wrong readings (something similar happens if you put it at the domed apex of a water tank, or near the corrugations at the side). I found that narrowing the sound aperture by cutting a 50mm high piece of packing foam to fit over the sensor with a similar sized rectangular window for it to hear through fixes the problem.

Thank you very much for this video. I've watched multiple videos of these same sensors and it seems that in water the distance must be greater for them to work. This has something to do with how fast the sound returns in small spaces. IE there was a test where results from edge of water was not accurate, but from boat was accurate as it was over 3 meters.

I've successfully tested the JSN-SR04T underwater although I rugged it in the rear and the sides. But if you take into account that sound speed underwater is about 4 times faster than in the air,the minimum distance it could read was about 85 centimeters. Maybe it was too long for being tested properly in a bathtub.

I can get reading as high as 6 meter in my field test in some pool nevertheless the maximum range of AJ-SR04M is about 6.5 meters and because sound travel faster underwater, it should giving the maximum range for about at least 20 meter underwater. yet I've never tested in that range

I like your videos, you are very precise and go into a lot of detail.
I think if you you wanted to use them in both water and air, you would need to receive raw data, some way to have you code know it was in air or water, then your code would use different formulas due to the different speeds of sound in air (340m/s) and water (1482m/s). (just guessing and temperature plays a role)
I don't have these sensors, but it may be a good experiment to do.

I've used the non waterproof sensors and waterproof sensors for years in a water tank to measure water level. The non waterproof ones will fail within a few months due to corrosion of the sensors. The jsn wasn't suitable because of it's high minimum sensing distance. The a02 is easy to use and so far has been working in a hot and humid environment for a year with no issues. I've also tried the expensive maxbotix waterproof sensors, but they were unable to read distance if the water was agitated during filling. The manufacturer confirmed this. The a02 comes in pwm and uart variants, I could only get the pwm type to work, in a similar manner to the normal sensors.

Great Tutorial!! I have used this sensor for Tank water level monitoring. As this sensor works on ultrasonic waves so it even detects the bugs and flies inside a tank,, if any bug or mosquito passes in front of the sensor it detects it as rising water level. I used to get random readings all of a sudden due to this reason. Then I switched to another sensor that works more accurate in that case.

I'm quite sure that these would work underwater, but you should take in to account that the measured distance should be multiplied by 4, due to the ~4 times the difference of the speed of sound under water (speed of sound in air is 0.231 times slower than in water). I also believe that this increased speed of sound also means that a minimum measurable distance of the sensors would be 4 times higher than normally. This should be tested in a pool, not in a bathtub that is way too small for the quoted minimum distances of these sensors. Also there is way too much echo underwater in a small bathtub.

    • @heinrichhelmbold419
      @heinrichhelmbold419 Рік тому

Would the rounded walls not affect the sound too? A bathtub doesn't really have a flat surface for sound to bounce back. It will always deflect instead of bounce straight back? Just curious - I definitely don't have facts

Okay, I’m answering a couple of years later. But I’ve been doing this exact thing. Yes, these work for measuring the water level, and they get a good reading from the surface of the water. The problem you will encounter is minimising reflections from other objects. Consensus is that if you somehow mount this sensor into a pipe and drop that pipe down into the tank, you’ll only get readings from the water surface, and not other objects. I managed this by 3D printing a mount for the sensor to insert into a pipe. The alignment of this mount is critical in getting reliable results. It has taken a few different designs. I’ve had it running reliably in two out of my three sumps for years. One of the sumps for some reason just never gets that level of reliability. Today with flood alerts in London I am revisiting my design!

Excellent video as always!! One thought though. For the JSN04 sensor in mode 0, could you not alter the constant to account for the fact that the sensor was underwater? Would that not then give accurate readings? Maybe something to try? Other than that, keep up the excellent videos!!!

Why use the white connector board. Your initial diagram shows direct connect for Arduino to sensor.

Extremely well explained. Thanks. I used SR04 for a while to check water level in 1100liter tanks. But they keep failing every few weeks. Now I'm using the JSN-SR20-Y1 because I need to measure from 4 cm to about 120 cm. I also use mode 1 to read by serial after sending 55. It works most of the time, but somehow, it goes completely wrong for a while, then comes back, etc etc. On a full day, it may read bad distance once or twice, for an hour or two at the time. Have you tried this JSN-SR20-Y1 yourself?

The AJ-SR04M is vary unstable,,, Shure you can get stable readings, BUT those stable readings will change, to OTHER stable readings depending what is located around the pcb of the device.... EMI..... Example.. put the device (PCB) in a plastic case ,, you get stable reading of say 111.x Now lay a 12 gage wire not connected to anything across the top of box and reading changes to a stable reading of 22.x .... We did shield the pcb, but this type of thing still happened..

    Hello,
I have a reolink camera with a pir sensor and want to make it into a underwater dome but need another sensor then the pir for activating the camera when motion is detected. You think i can replace the pir in de camera with this one ?

curious if you have thought of using LIDAR sensors instead of ultra sonic sensors? ( being as it's on an outside Robot?)
or would a lidar be the incorrect type for a robot?

Nice video. Question: Would it be possible to extend the cable on one of these sensors? My anticipated application is measuring the water level in a river, for which I want to attach the sensor to a beam above the water. Thanks!

There's a video that tried extending the cable but failed. I believe it is some sort of a co-axial cable. They ended up extending the wire from the control board or the micro controller connected to the control board

hey I really like your video. I've might have solution for you if you want to measure something underwater. you can use JSN-SR04T or AJ-SR04M as driver for fish finder transducer. just change the transduser with fish finder. the cheap one. I've tested it and it work

It might be interesting to try and measure the distance to an object while it's raining. I would guess the rain drops would interfere with the sensor's ability to accurately measure distances, but I haven't tried it so I really don't know. Perhaps you could test that. You also might consider mounting one of these devices on a servo so you can sweep an area with the sensor or direct it to specific locations...Just a few thoughts. Have a great day.

I have a JSN-SR04T in mode 5 monitoring my front door which triggers a chime and activates a camera when someone is close, so far it hasn't triggered with rain but I have some blurry video footage of passing magpies.

    • @unrealzocker

You could also take ~100 measurements (or how many you want) and calculate mean (or median) and use that value, rain won't be an issue then.
