I bet you wont answer my question, how many hours a day average is OTD school at a college, actually sitting in class, is it 9-3pm 10-4pm when does class let out, your nest guess, please don't say we'll it depends on the school, your best guess.

    Hey OTDude,
Just finished the last of my Prerequisites yesterday! Had Human A&P part 2 and chemistry over this summer quarter. Now I’m reaching out to get my volunteer hours and shadowing. It’s been really hard to find a place to volunteer during this pandemic. I think the online OT shadowing is alright but really want to be in person. You think volunteering at an assisted care facility will be a good place to get exposure? They offer memory training and skills training, over here in Seattle. My main focus is to work in schools and help young individuals gain their own independence. I’m also a huge skateboarder so it would be awesome in the future to inspire the youth to get into skating, the skatepark is the most inclusive environment I know and my biggest dream is to build indoor inclusive parks. Unfortunately I haven’t gotten any word back from OTs that work in schools. I do not want to work in the hospital setting.
Thank you for your awesome video. Very informative!
    Cheers,
    Luiz

It's definitely been hard getting volunteer hours. Keep trying and keep and open mind. Try out whatever setting you can get to at least get some hours down. Good luck!

Hi! What would you recommend majoring in for OT? I just started college and I am striving for kinesiology but am leaning towards psychology as well.. Please let me know your thoughts!

@@Doingmybest700 Hey hope all is well! I ended up getting into my top OT program last month! I'm so relieved to get in because the pre-requisites and everything was a lot of work. For undergrad I doubled majored in: Sociology and Disability Studies. Also got minors in: Law, Society & Justice and Diversity. I think you would do great with Kinesiology as a major and a Psychology background. I recommend taking some Social/Public health classes. Since OT is a lot with the holistic approach understanding the social body is just as important as the physical body. It is great you have an interest in OT early on. I had no idea I would apply to OT school during nor after graduating. I gained interest out of research and wrote down what classes I needed in order to apply, I had to do a lot of classes online since I didn't do most during undergrad. Talk with an advisor who can introduce you to OTs and mentors. Also keep a list of schools you want to apply to and take those pre-requisite classes. For my pre-req GPA I got ~3.9, but total GPA was just over a 3.0. I really wanted it and it worked out! You can do it!!!

@@luzbrv Hi Luiz! First of all, congrats on getting into your top OT program! That’s incredible. Also, I am in awe that you double majored, as well as getting minors?! I’m slowly learning about the school system; I don’t quite understand how it all works just yet. I just hear that double majoring can be very difficult. I will definitely stick with Kinesiology for the time being… I am actually not 100% set on OT since I’ve always wanted to become a Physical Therapist. Did you ever consider PT btw? And thank you for your recommendations and kind words!

i’m confused of what occupational therapy even is

Occupational therapy helps people participate in the activities they find meaningful when they have a mental or physical disability. This can be from relearning how to go to the toilet, to helping children with Autism do well in school to helping someone with depression get back to their daily routine. If you are interested in learning more, google AOTA or BLS.gov are good resources to start.
