  • Here I talk about the SBW-06D2X-U from Asus and why it is a solid choice for my storage needs.
    Buy here ebay.us/EHY64r
    My store: rover.ebay.com...
UPDATE: The install CD worked fine from the Asus Blu-Ray burner and you can choose to install 4 software packages. I installed 3 and am using the drag and drop function right to a CD icon on my desktop and am burning 100GB BDXL in about 90min although the disk only takes 95gb or so. One software does phone storage backup over wifi. I purchased this for data backup but will also be pursuing UHD movie playback if at all possible. (possibly not).

I just bought this model in 2023 based on your review. I had earlier purchased and returned another company's model - I assumed these extern al blu-ray burners came with software but they do not. Some of the software (especially the free ones) out there iare dubious and not cheap. All in one was how it used to be done back in the day when you bought external devices.

Yeah mine works excellent also with the bundled software. If people didn't burn movies so much, we would be treated much more like kings with the software bundle, but alas.

While having two USB connectors to get extra current is a clever way to avoid requiring a separate power brick, there can be some issues with connecting one of them to a phone charger, since it might be at a different base potential from your PC's USB ports, and you end up injecting voltage into your PC.
If you connect something _just_ to the charger, that's not really an issue (the negative can be at +220V relative to earth, but if the positive is at +225, your device only sees +5 - note that you can still get a shock from it if you're earthed when you touch the wires, and this _has_ happened to a lot of people with cheap chargers). But if your PC is earthed (unlike phone chargers, which generally aren't), its negative USB line will be at "true" 0V, and now you get a potential difference between it and the charger... which is what electronics experts call "not good".
There _should_ be some protections against this built into your PC (and hopefully also into the Asus cable itself), but I remember a few years ago a lot of Mac motherboards got fried because of a similar issue (basically, they'd decided to save 20 cents by not having that protection on some ports).
TL;DR: Don't connect the secondary USB to a cheap phone charger. In fact, first try using two independent USB ports on your PC (ex., a 3.2 port and a 2.0 port), that might have separate power, and use a separate phone charger only if it's really necessary.

Sounds valid. I think a lot of USB leads back to the same bus bar in some instances, so the DC is similar in spec. If it were AC it would need to have the sine wave timed like when a windmill charges the grid....or bad things may happen. Don't ask me how CHAT knows.

You could have still bought an internal drive and put it inside 5.25 inch USB 3.0 to SATA enclosure. ASUS even has a model of that kind as a whole package. Desktop drives are more sturdy and probably last longer as well.

The only real flaw with this is the mini-B USB connection. The fact that it's not USB 3 isn't an issue to me as at x6 you aren't coming close to saturating the 480 megabits a second that USB 2 is capable of.

this only plays regular bluray disks but im happy and content just having this and being able to watch bluray quality movies. also if you want to play uhd 4k content its alot of hassle with computer no matter what uhd 4k player you have. you would need to have a specific intel processor 10th gen and below plus other requirements according to google. i think its easier just to buy the ones for tv

Yeah I have the Xbox One X. I don't rip movies. I just use the Redbox. My Matrix switch kicks the PC down to 1080P but the Xbox will pass through at 4K. An imperfect world for the mortal.

For some reason this drive is not reading some DVDs I have burned. They are in perfect condition, not scratched. The drive in my laptop can handle it, but this drive can't.

I bought the same Asus External Blu-Ray Burner SBW-06D2X-U in April 2018. Exactly the same model as you showed in your youtube Video. I tried to burn and transfer a MP4 Video with file size 11.2 GB to the Asus Blu-Ray writer. It doesn't work at all. My Blu-Ray disk is a HP BD-R 25GB Data Single Layer. Cannot burn a Blu-Ray Disc. My SBC-06D2X-U keeps ejecting the blank Blu Ray discs. But, to Burn on a regular, single layer DVD, it worked. Only file size data less than 4.7GB, it work

It can do 95gb of a 100gb disc. I use the included software and the drag and drop function.
If you right click the desktop icon you can solve any problems like disk selection and detection.

The internals seem to be springy in that direction. I believe it is more shock absorbent in this orientation, although I put it on a pillow next to my computer when burning so I don't have to mediate pergo stomps.

Worst Blu-ray Writer I have bought so far, can't burn BDR-DL properly, burning disc has no problem but when playback movie on standalone Blu-ray or 4k player, video will freeze skip and hang for 1 to 2 minutes during layer change and cause the Bd player hang, at first I thought was the disc I bought cause the problem, but after burning the same brand of disc with other bd writer, no layer change problem. I have used Verbatim, Ritek and even Sony Blu-ray disc to burn movies on this writer, all have layer change problem. I owned this machine not even a month and I definitely disappointed buying this crack and it's not cheap!
