Billboard charts-wise, 1989 belonged to Bobby Brown, Milli Vanilli, Paula Abdul, New Kids On The Block and Madonna. They had the most hit singles. Also the year of Richard Marx, Debbie Gibson, Martika and Chicago's top ballads, a great year for rockers (Bon Jovi, Poison, Guns N' Roses, Warrant, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Skid Row), the year of Tim Burton's Batman fever, and the release of Janet Jackson's multi-platinum album Rhythm Nation 1814, the #1 selling album of 1990.
What I remember about 1989 is that modern pop radio would play a song for 2-3 months and then you never hear it again. It was about the same amount of time for popular artists to come out with a new song. The music never got stale. There were so many good songs, the charts couldn't contain them all. By the mid to late 1990's, modern pop radio was playing songs heavily for 6-9 months. Many songs were good when they came out, but after 6 months of constantly hearing them on the radio, it got sickening.
I can't believe Milli Vanilli (or Silly Vanilli as my brother calls them) are higher than Mike and the Mechanics with their brilliant classic 'The Living Years'.

Strangely I agree that it was the year that a lot of positive things happened in my life and worldwide. It was pretty much the end of the cold war with the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. However, music wise I think 1987 was the best year for constant hits despite the number 1 song of that year being a novelty song.
@@iamnostalgic9567 I understand you and Lee. That song was my niece's favourite. She ceased to walk amongst us in 2019 at the age of just 34. I now see the song in a new light.
1000% correct. I was there. It grieves the living heck out of me. I would say there were at 10 tracks which EASILY could've should've been #1 instead. of Look Away. It's not even one of CHICAGOs best.
Look Away is way better than a lot of the year end #1’s Look Away is better than Hold On, Everything I Do, The Sign, Believe, Breathe, We Belong Together, Bad Day, Irreplaceable, Rolling in the deep, Levitating & Heat Waves
You guys in the UK had many doses of Kylie and Jason in that year!! I'll take them over Chicago's "Look Away" anytime. Still mesmerize me how it became the top song of '89 with so many and better contenders on this list!
I think they got #1 and 2 mixed up. In what alternative universe in 1989🙄 is CHICAGO hitting number one of the entire year over Poison & Bobby Brown?? I will eternally have an issue over "Look Away" being #1. Overall '89 was right up there as one of my favorite years from the 80s. It was the year of NKOTB and Bon Jovi. Milli Vanilli and Paula Abdul definitely. '83-89 were unbelievable in quality and uniqueness. From Thomas Dolby through Nenah Cherry😆🎵🎶🇺🇲
No, I remember this year very clearly. Look Away was the Billboard #1 song of 1989 even though it wasn't released nor peaked in 1989. It peaked December 1988. In matter of fact, so did the #3 song by Poison peak in 1988. The #2 song by Bobby Brown was also released in 1988, but peaked in January 1989. The best performing songs on the all time list that were from 1989 were actually "Miss You Much" and "Another Day In Paradise" both of which outperformed "Look Away", but had a large portion of their chart runs in 1990.
1989 is such an underrated year too. Taylor Swift had to ruin the year for her personality. (no hate but come on!) Songs released that year are the best ever!
Some decent ones in there, and some truly awful ones as well, then again Bobby Brown has always been capable of dragging down the demographic wherever he goes..
My Prerogative deserved the #1 this year. But Look Away is so overhated. Chicago has done better but its really decent in my opinion probably better than hard to say I’m sorry
It actually peaked in December 1988, but Billboard includes (or used to include) the previous December in its year end chart. December 1989 was included in the 1990 year-end list, and so on.
@@zombiedodge1426 The chart year is December 1-November 30. December is used to compile the year end chart which is released at the end of the year and the last regular chart is frozen for that week.

Example. You see how loooong they stretched out Appetite for Destruction singles.
Guns n Roses can never say pop Radio ignored them😂
And yet again another excellent 80's compilation 👌
I can't believe Milli Vanilli (or Silly Vanilli as my brother calls them) are higher than Mike and the Mechanics with their brilliant classic 'The Living Years'.
NKOTB dominating the charts! And so many other great songs!!! ❤️🎼❤️

Such a good year. Great memories of great times 💥

For about 8 months in 1989 I was suffering from a nasty case of depression so fine it was a tough year. The depression broke in the fall of 1989
The turn of the decade was on🔥. Amazing songs, the CD revolution, MTV full stream ahead.., It didnt last long but it was an unforgettable time
At least 30-40 all time classic songs. In contrary name me one song from the last year which will be remembered in 30 years
Donna Summer returning to this list really made me smile!
#12 Waiting for a Star to Fall. That song means so much to me.
