  • In these days of computer-designed, laser cut, 3D printed, airbrushed, precision-scaled, photorealistic accuracy, I think we've lost something of the charm and appeal of handmade and hand-painted miniatures. Can a model steam locomotive be brush painted? Should it be? I tried it. See for yourself.

Wow. Truly stunning work, and with a brush (plus your talent and skill, no doubt!). Really amazed how the black gesso dried dead flat and with no brush marks. I guess that's the secret to the rest of the paint job?
I am going to give this a try on a HO scale steamer. Many thanks for a well done tutorial.

Gutes Video, Danke dir! ;o) :oD

That looks great. I am about to paint one myself by hand. Thanks for the tutorial. I will get myself some Liquitex gesso.

softer brush and a lot less paint may be the answer . Decals are a pain -especially considering the're gonna be the second to last process , we strive to get a nice matt paint , then have to gloss it to put decals on !! go figure , same for all modellers ships , planes , armour . finished loco looks excellent 😍😍 Wales UK.

The painting of painting a dark clor one the coat is applied it makes details pop!.. Rivits piping that you wont notice unles it had paint. Brass and copper for trim handles and a little red on valves and once done a different engine than you started with. Dont move the model while painting I finished coat and touched the smokestack had to repaint it.It was a gold spot did nt hide for anything.

5 years late, but I guess the silvering was caused by not letting the decals dry properly before sealing them around the edges with Future?

That came out very nice! I may try this with one of my locos. Also, I noticed the deer was a White-tail, so I'm guessing you live in Pennsylvainia. I do too, so I'm curious as to what part of the state you are from. Thanks!

What program did you use to make the decal with? At 10:38, what brush is that? Awesome job by the way!

What kit did you use to convert it into a 2-4-0 with tender? I'd love to do the same with one.

Beware of mixing water based paint with Future and Testors dull coat......after a few years mine spiderweb cracked and ruined entire model. Good luck.

What method and what product did you use to remove the factory lettering?

Hi, I have only recently found your videos and have absolutely fallen in love with them. I was just wondering If you have a layout for all this gorgeous work.

+Brian Straight Thanks for the compliment. I don't have a layout. I just dabble in the hobby.

Awesome video! I've been thinking of trying this on an HO engine. Question: what purpose does the floor finish serve?

I painted the inside of my Shay black also, Why Bachmann mades it green?

Real steam locomotive cabs are often painted green on the inside. I'm not sure why. Maybe it has something to do with the heat? Since the cab is around the firebox, if it were painted black, it would get quite hot in there, much more than it usually is, so maybe they painted them green so the heat didn't absorb into the cab walls? You'd think I'd know this, considering I work on a steam locomotive, but no.

Your talent is amazing . I have a question for you. I have a union pacific AB units that I want to repaint and turn in the Minion Express for my grandson. I want to fill in the lettering with bondo and reapply with raised lettering. Do you have any other ideas I should use or will bondo do. Thanks

    • @oscalescratchbuilder
      @oscalescratchbuilder  8 років тому

I prefer to use Liquitex Modeling Paste over Bondo or any other putty.

Have you used milliput epoxy putty before? quite a few modelers use it plus woodturners

Or ya can use CA glue and baking soda. Works great for fillers.
