    Very helpful ( as always). You “filled in the blanks” on this process . I’ve never skimmed off the old wax. Thanks for the insight.

    Yes thanks for breaking these down into smaller segments... If they were any longer I probably wouldn't click and watch. I'm just a mid-50s old gal in the panhandle of Florida watching for entertainment value. I appreciate you!

    Used walnut dye when I started out 50+ years ago. Didn't know if anybody still used this method. Glad to see some of the old ways still being used. Hey, they're free!

    I really want to thank you. I started trapping thist year, due to some time on my hands after a head injury. Our season opened the 1st. So far I have 6 muskrat, 2 skunk, (neither sprayed) and 3 coons. I wouldn't have known where to start without your videos. Unfortunately here in Wa its all cage traps. But you really have helped prompt me in the right direction. From catching to prep. Thank you!

    Needed this exact information, I did a trap prep last year but never got around to using them cause I couldn’t afford the fur handling equipment I wanted. This year, Christ willing, I’ll be trapping for the first time!

      Don’t wait for everything you need just get out and do it. If you can’t finish’s furs then freeze them. If you can’t skin sell them whole. Don’t miss a season you’ll regret it when your either to busy to do it or to old.

    • @mikewhitman745
      @mikewhitman745 2 роки тому

      I agree with the other guy, just get out there and do it. I think it's better to learn the basic style so you understand the why and how, then you can apply those lessons to more complicated and gear intensive work.
      Remember, the old timers would build their own gear, fleshing boards are nothing more than a smooth tapered piece of wood. Nothing really special.
      Get out and do it!!
      And yes, I'm taking my own advice. I bought some traps, got some dye, made an anchor setting tool, will be making fleshing and stretching boards this summer and be ready for trapping season this fall since I missed the 21-22 season. Also I don't have a job now so money is pretty tight, I can make everything but the traps themselves. If I can do it so can you.

    I’ve had good luck with paint and a sealer for my land sets. I just repaint and redip each year. I would like to see how you prep connibears. I don’t feel like painting is giving as much protection as I’d like, and I don’t have a vessel big enough to dip them.

I showed my uncle some of your videos and he was amazed. He said we used to have to get this kind of info from an old man down the road. Thanks again, and I’d like to see some different tips on the line this yr. Do you make your own bait?

    Hey man. I don’t know if you have been notified yet or not but you were brought up on the Meateater podcast that Steve Rinella does regarding him using your videos to learn how to extract skunk essence. Hopefully that is a foreshadow of them asking you to come on the podcast. Would definitely be awesome. Anyways, love you videos!

    My first season is getting close here in MO. I've got walnuts soaking in a 5 gal bucket to dye some 110's and bridger #2's. Gotta get them degreased first. When you use "cold" water to dye the traps, how long do you let them soak compared to boiling the dye water?

  • @jackriley5974
    @jackriley5974 Рік тому

    A hundred years ago a trapper never dyed or waxed his traps! The smart ones would hang them up in a tree at the end if the season rather than collect them and take them home. Of course, today you drive up to your set? Think about it; if you're going to bury the trap, why the need for dye and wax? Dyeing them is ridiculous, but waxing them once when they're new may help prevent rust. However, rust doesn't effect the traps function as much as you're led to believe. As with any endeavor, trappers are swamped by snake oil salesmen wanting to sell you something. Keep in mind; a dogs sense of smell is 400 times greater that yours and the more you handle a trap the greater the chance of contaminating it. If "time is money" consider all the time spent in the preparation of traps when you figure how much you lost doing what you love, and you will definitely lose! Check out the fur prices in the 70s and convert that to today's dollars. Good Luck!!
