    Spot on my friend. Same thing for us in Georgia. Depend heavily on the mighty wood duck.

      Thank you. Not a bad to have as a staple bird in my opinion!

      Virginia Outdoors Unlimited in most cases yes. Where I’m at, we struggle to get much else. Until January then the divers come in.

      Brandon Lee same here. Motor too big. There’s some good walk in spots from what I understand

      Addison Estes it’s dead, to many competition around Juliette specially with that DU refuge up top and how they stay at the water above the power plant

    Thank you for these tips. Especially the sitting call. I took my son last weekend-first time duck hunting for both of us. Had 4 woodies come in right in front of us. We both fired twice and missed everything. We noticed the ducks coming in the swamp while we were deer hunting. They only flew for 20 minutes. Going again this weekend.

    • @HokeOutdoors
      @HokeOutdoors  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching Sam, glad to hear that you found them helpful! That is typical for woodies to have a quick morning flight, hope you can get another crack at them again this weekend!

    Been hunting the gentlemen of the woods for over 25 years here in Michigan. Theses tips are SPOT ON!! I have seen several woodys with 3-4 big acorns in there crop. Pigeons too! Its crazy how much they can fit in there. Switched to #2's after getting feathers to much with 4s. The Boss #3 3" puts them down hard and the geese too! Might move to boss #4 or 5s next year. Love the videos man, thanks for the entertainment. Keep it up!

      Thank you, really appreciate it! I'd definitely recommend trying out some BOSS #5s for woodies. I was crushing everything from pintails to teal with them out in Kansas.

    Welcome back to the UA-cam Thomas. Been subscribed and still kept checking to make sure I didn't miss a new video.
    The swamps we hunt mostly are full of woodies and spot on about not being late. Keep up the good work and good luck with the school work load.

    Very good educational video on the Woodies, Thomas. As others have said you covered in All.
    Since starting in 53 in Louisiana I've taken a total of one Woodie (hen).
    Your back waters and swamps of Virgina look like The ideal habitat. Hope weather and circumstances work out for you for your re-opener on the 21ST.

    • @HokeOutdoors
      @HokeOutdoors  5 років тому +2

      Thanks Sly! The woodies certainly love the swamps around us, tons of cover and food which they're both big on. We actually open back up for our third split on Thursday, pretty much just one day left till we're hopefully shooting birds

  • @coreyk5536

    Great tips #6 probably the best, recently had to relocate our go to blind for opener as we were getting burned so often losing site of woodies as they bombed down into our spread and we’d lose them in the cedar backdrop. Now facing out onto the main lake to the east. Central Ontario, Canada opener Saturday 🇨🇦 🤟🏾

    I have found that 3 floating still wood duck decoys mixed with a 3 Decoy jerk rig and a spinning wing they come in every time they fly over we got a 6 man limit on a beaver pond using this in 15 mins

    I've learned once they land near your decoys they can be called on the water to get them closer. I've also learned that if you think they are wounded then shoot them again even when their head is down. Wood ducks love to dive and many of my friends have lost their trophy wood duck that way

    • @HokeOutdoors
      @HokeOutdoors  5 років тому

      That's definitely true, I've called woodies through flooded timber many times. Haven't had a lot of experiences with them diving though, typically they just swim along the surface when crippled for us

  • @thedriveinopera8889

    Yea, mallard decoys work just fine, me and my buddy went on a wooduck hunt over the weekend and used mallard decoys and the woodies landed right in the middle of all the decoys almost every time.

    Are wood ducks more likely to be attracted to a wood duck spinning wing decoy. Or am I over thinking it. New to duck hunting, so I'm not sure how picky ducks are

    • @HokeOutdoors
      @HokeOutdoors  3 роки тому

      I haven't seen any difference in them being attracted to one type of spinner over another. With spinning wind decoys I think they're really just focused on the flashing

  • @BiggieGamez69
    @BiggieGamez69 5 років тому +1

    Now, do you necessarily need decoys and water motion if the area is a usual feeding area. I have a spot I found, every time I show up there are always wood ducks there, whether it be morning or night, it seems like they’re there 24/7, I’ve been watching the spot for a while.

    • @HokeOutdoors
      @HokeOutdoors  5 років тому

      No, definitely not. Many times we’ve shot landing woodies over no decoys. I do think they help with having the bird land right in your lap vs maybe 20-30 yards away though
