@@oDrashiao Thanks! Yea if we did that it would mess it up for French speakers and all over subtitles that would have to go over the subs. 20% of our audience uses some form of captions for accessibility reasons or because they watch in a different language. So keeping it clean is critical for us. We trust people can learn to turn them on. I mean if they're gonna sit down to watch a 80 minute video they probably won't mind, right? :)
In 20 years people will have this treasure trove of high quality documentaries that tell the stories of the games and developers that came before. Thank you.
Noclip will one day be bought by some kind of media company, who after trying to monetize it for a few years and failing, will simply remove the videos and/or channel. Seriously, make a youtube playlist of anything on youtube, then a few years later go back and look at it. [DELETED] every 5th video. Sad but true.
46:30 He nails a zombie's foot to the ground, and it keeps at lunging and trying to attack the player. That's an amazing detail i've never seem done anywhere else. God, this looks amazing, i wish this game saw the light of day
I legitimately feel bad for the guys who wanted to make Ravenholm. Getting emotionally invested into something but not being allowed to finish has to suck.
Honestly, more than Ravenholm I'm now just pissed about The Crossing. Because what they showed here looks amazing. And you can see early style and development ideas that ended up in Dishonored
Can thank Bethesda for that, they did next to no marketing for it + their whole "we don't send games to reviewers until the game is out (and no one cares at that point because journalists have moved on to "the next big thing") : they killed Prey, Dishonored 2 (that came out like 2 weeks before Battlefield / Call Of Duty and other big tentpoles, basically sending it to get slaughtered against the marketing push of those titles). Oh and the optimization for titles was... subpar to say the least, telltale sign of not investing much in QA by Bethesda.
something was off with that game...it had many good aspects, full on bioshock in space vibes...but for some reason, it was so boring and after like 5 hours or so i could not play it anymore...so i guess something was missing for me, but it was good still, but not good enough to play till the end
"That race for more technology, more content, shaders, more looks, etc... often comes at odds with that agility that we need to try quick, cool ideas." Such a strong statement, and even stronger coming from the man who founded one of the studio that, in my opinion, shook up and even revolutionalized modern gaming in terms of design but also in terms of art. It really resonates with me. Thanks to everyone at Arkane who never gave up throughout the years and made it possible, and thank you Noclip for telling that story.
Just look at the demo made for Unreal 5 game engine, so much quality but zero idea in the gameplay. Ok it's just a demo but that's what they are going to sell us, wonderful realistic images made by technicians with stupid content because there will be no budget left for developing ideas!
@@kukipett The whole point of the new engine is to give artists more breathing room and more capabilities to be creative. Put in the right hands, it could actually allow for more creative and unique experiences not less. Just because they showed a hyperrealistic setting with bland gameplay for the demo doesn't mean that's what every company and developer is going to do with the engine.
@@co28158 Of course, but do you realise the huge amount of work, time and money you need to make such assets for a game. Games a becoming more and more complex, more and more beautiful but less and less interesting, and there is not much creativity in using quixel assets, the art is in what you create not in what you copy from reality. The unreal 5 engine is wonderfull, but there are no miracles, i guess there is a price to pay somewhere, when i ear someone say "It just works" i start to worry!
@@kukipett how about we wait for A GAME to be made with the engine before we start talking about how it's the death of creativity. Also not every game is going to use unreal 5
@Alexander Supertramp I think you don't need to be that harsh with him. Granted his response sounds naive but I think that the concern is legit and as a game artist that's a concern I can get behind.
I would do anything for Valve to let Arkane just release Ravenholm onto the internet. No one will consider it canon, they put so much hard work in. Never mind selling it, just let Arkane show their work to the world and I'm sure all Half Life fans will love it. It looks incredible, Half Life is back and there would be nothing better than Valve showing their further dedicated return to the series than Arkane showing their old work. They've already let Half Life's remake be sold on THEIR platform, and they let the devs keep the money even though it's not their IP. Even Half Life 2 Remastered is being rumoured, again Valve aren't making it but they will likely let him sell it. They care more about the series influence more than how much money it makes, that has always applied. Even before they had Steam.
"We dont care about the money, ofcourse we need the money to make the next one, but we are not gonna chase what makes money. We chase what artistically inspires us" This is always how I have felt when I played Dark Messiah as a young kid to when I replayed it as an adult, Compared to other games, even more popular games I always felt the atmosphere, the game itself, was a work of passion.
After the Dishonored series and Prey Arkane became my favorite sudio. The art, level design, atmosphere, and the stories are so deep it sticks to you and keep you aways wanting more. Can't wait to play Deathloop. I'd love to see the continuation of Prey. And please give us Dishonored 3!
Isn't Death of the Outsider technically Dishonored 3? I know it's not much more than a large DLC, but I feel like the story came to an end 9considering, well, that the outsider is dead). Another spinoff would be dope though
@@aed3r It was considered the end of the Kaldwin era. But not the last of Dishonored. The studio are taking some time away now to focus on Deathloop and other projects, but Dishonored will return. There are plenty of locations to explore within the Dishonored universe. We've only seen two locations (Dunwall and Karnaca) but there are plenty more to be fleshed out. How and when we will see those, remains to be seen. But Bethesda believes strongly in Arkane, and given the financial success of the series, it wont be the last spin Arkane has at Dishonored.
Ah, this is a tough watch today after the news about Arkane Austin. Arkane continues to be one of my favorite studios, sad they never seem to catch a break
Interesting that the Dishonored 2 branch survived, but the Prey branch would shut down after Redfall. Probably Raphael had to take responsibility for the failure of Prey and step down.
This was so damn good. The insight into all of Arkane's previous projects was super fascinating, especially seeing how their features later fed into Dishonored and Prey. Super excited to see more of those in the summer docs!! I'm very proud to be a patron right now.
This is by far the best documentary Noclip has put out! The pacing was excellent, the video call bits with Harvey Smith and Raphael Colantonio were handled really well and edited to perfection! Amazing work! Was waiting for this for a long long time and it was well worth the wait. Happy Patren here
Great work on this! Rosa at the end really nailed why I love Arkane. In a sea of generic annual releases, Arkane is one of the few AAA dev's that will really take risks and create something unique. Super excited for the summer docs about Dishonored and Prey, and of course I'm dying to see more about Death Loop!
Me: "Wait, that's it for Prey? I wanted to see more!" Danny: "hold your horses we're going to release way more stuff about Prey and Dishonored as well" Danny, you beautiful Irish bastard
the ravenholm segment nearly made me cry, you can tell they really loved what they were building. everyone still sounds so passionate about it too, even so many years later
When I played Dishonored as a 16 year old boy when it came out, it changed my world, my perspective of what a video game could be. I have over 330 hours playtime in the franchise and wrote an academic paper about the implications of agency and morals within it. Even though I haven´t finished Prey yet, it got me through once of the hardest periods in my life last year, when I really needed an escape. It gave me the chance to explore a world with defined rules but enough agency, to make me feel like I had an impact on it, to really express myself and experiment. Dishonored is the reason Im studying video game design and that is a reason, why Im putting up with a lot of the hardships I face. Its the kind of game I want to make, but that scares the shit out of me at times. This documentary has granted me some vision into the rocky and passionate road it takes, but its also shown me that its possible and well worth it. I cant stress enough how much this franchise means to me and also the company behind it. Thanks
I discovered Dishonored at 30, when I thought I was done with videogames. And it gave me back the same enthusiasm as when I was 6 and played my first games.
I was also 16 when it was released, having just graduated high school. Dishonored was a blind buy, but I had actually played Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, not realizing it was the same studio. I was so hooked on Dishonored, I actually beat the whole thing the day I started it (on PS3) - a whopping 11 hour mostly low chaos playthrough. I couldn't sleep without knowing the Empress was safe. Even though I was tired, I didn't want Emily to hate Corvo so I stayed low chaos. Though, turns out, she wouldn't hate Corvo, she would just be influenced by high chaos in a negative way I literally have over a thousand video games and Dishonored is top 3 of all time. Something like: 1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2. Dishonored 3. Bloodborne
@@EhurtAfy Man, thats amazing! Thanks for your response. Low Chaos first try in 11 hours is quite the record. I think it took me like 6 hours to do the first mission. Me and 2 friend pulled and allnighter and spend like 2 hours frantically searching the Overseers back yard for a place to atatch that stupid crank wheel. Turns out we had robbed the place alrdy, because you could go in a different way. I´ve recently spend 3 hours analyzing the walls of light for a paper for uni and had the time of my life. The wayy all the pieces fit together in this game is just mindboogling!
@@gingerwhale871 Yes, it usually takes me a week or two to beat most games that length, but got a bit obsessed. I've now done Ghost + Clean Hands on all the Dishonored games 1,2, and DOTO, but can't bring myself to do the high chaos runs for some reason - never feels right
Arkane is one of those studios that are growing on me as time passes by, and this incredible insight into their history just bumped my appreciation for them even more.
hey Noclip, you need a 00:00 timestamp so youtube automatically creates sections on the timeline based on the timestamps! It's a new feature that is super useful. You also need to have the timestamps in the description
Prey was such an awesome experience. Easily in my top 10 favorites. You could tell they loved making that game and coming up with all the crazy ideas in it. Can't wait for what Arkane has in store for us!
I absolutely loved the 3 Dishonored games and Prey, but i'm a bit worried about Deathloop, i absolutely dislike games where you just repeat the same game loop again and again Like in Mooncrash. And more there is Bethesda behind them and when you see what Bethesda is doing now with Fallout 76 and the problem with Doom Eternal, you are really worried, they are a huge company with no soul anymore that only cares about the money.
@@kukipett I don't think Bethesda will be a factor in Deathloop, except perhaps for some atrocious marketing. I loved Mooncrash for what it was. It was a bit light on story perhaps, and I always prefer the main campaign to DLCs. But I had tons of fun with the concept. I bet Arkane are getting Deathloop set to a point where they are going to integrate the 'rogue-light' experience of Mooncrash into a full story. So long as it's an immersive sim, I'll be happy.
37 year old gamer here, and been a fan of Arkane since Arx Fatalis. It's been a great ride to follow their progression and evolution trough their games, and I'm so freakin glad they are still doing what they do best, wich is follow their passion and transmit that to the games they make. And never knew about the game with Spielberg and EA, looked very promising, but EA......enough said. And if it had hapened, and the Ravenholm, then maybe we wouldn't have had Dishonored, so there's a good tought :) Thanks for this documentary, was extremely nice to know and see more upclose.
Colantonio and Smith made such a great team. The two of them are such innovative designers. I was sad to see Colantonio leave Arkane, but at the same time I'm excited to see what he does next.
There was a time when he said he won't be making games anymore. I'm glad he wen't back on that. I think he is the sole reason Prey turned out to be the best game of 2017
@@nomercy8989 I'll make just one more then ;) Also Prey was possible thanks to other people that were also very key to the making of the game: Ricardo Bare to mention just one, Manu Petit for the Art Direction, it was definitely a team work.
@@raphaelcolantonio8514 Congrats for creating such a great company and pushing game design forward. The way you people were defining and dealing with immersion + creative/emergent gameplay was ahead of its time and I do believe those concepts will become key in the future of VR. Thank your for creating amazing games that are cherished memories and true milestones of game development :)
@@raphaelcolantonio8514 talk Bethesda into letting you do a Fallout. I think Arkane's Gameplay and world building and stuff would kick ass for it. I am looking forward to any game Arkane makes!
Incredible documentary. Also love the facct that they recognize the elevator jumps in Dishonored to skip the intro cut scenes and save the empress. Sir Firenewt would love this.
Dishonored and Prey, of the best gaming has to offer in recent years and massively underrated. I have all the respect in the world for companies that put artistic integrity over making money, and it shows with titles like those. And it's really disappointing to see how much this industry aims for the bare minimum and gets better revenue, when others truly work their asses to get a cool franchise out. As for the cancelled HL project yeah... add it to the list of countless projects Valve cancelled. Honestly if I was a game dev and Valve would approach to me to make a game, I'd decline immediately. It's a 9/10 chance they'll end up cancelling whatever you're working on on a whim for one reason or the other.
Incredible. It's so assuring to see their quirkiness and attitude withstanding these times. Prey is one of my favorite games and I can't wait to see what comes next
This is so cool. You can really see the development of the art and architecture style as they progressed, and you can especially see the shadows of those early games in Dishonored. Some of the Crossing concept art looked straight from Dishonored. Absolutely incredible doc!
I've been looking forward to the Ravenholm section, this is where the fun begins I'm getting serious HLA Vortigaunt Cook vibes from that first Ravenholm scene
I haven't played HL:Alyx, but I've watched the playthrough (since I'm not likely to ever own a VR headset). But their bolt electricity thing in Ravenholm looks similar to what Valve did with HL:Alyx, just without the bolt part.
I wish LMNO didn't get canceled. That looked truly incredible -- the sound design and the look of the game...I can *literally* only imagine what it would look like with todays technology.
@@cordelian1806 There is a fan mod doing that, btw: www.moddb.com/mods/arx-insanity-mod And another one remaking the game in UE4: www.moddb.com/mods/arx-fatalis-ue4-remastered And if you were to play Arx, there is a fan made engine with ports to different OSs: arx-libertatis.org/
I just want to say a big thank you to Noclip and Arkane. For me Arkane turned out to be a studio that makes exactly the type of games I love, but I don't know that much about them. I've tried Dishonored in 2013, loved Mandalore's videos about Arx and Dark Messiah and just recently finished Prey and it was the blast! And now I can finallylearn about people behind it all.
People hating on Bethesda, but as a publisher they allow their teams to make great solo games with even sequels even if it didn't sell well. Dishonored, The evil within 1&2, Prey ,Doom (the development of this game was so long), Wolfenstein of Machine Games. When i look back on the 2010's, Bethesda have published my favorites solo games of this era.
Yes. For me, Blizzard, iD Software and Epic Megagames own the 90s, early 2000s. Valve and Bethesda owns 2000s. And Bethesda just keeps sending it in 2010s. That's just for me. I know the industry would include The Sims and sports franchise games, because they've had quite the following, too. Definitely a lot of choice of some very high quality games. Which is probably detrimental to Valve and the Half-Life universe. They just hold back waiting to figure out and design the "Next Big Thing" (ergo, HL: Alyx).
Dishonored sold well. Dishonored 2 didn't, reason why you won't see a third game. Prey was terribly marketted by Bethesda. As for Doom, I don't think Bethesda had anything to do with the quality of the final product. Bethesda didn't want Mick Gordon to use guitars in his soundtrack, to give you an idea... Bethesda bought excellent studios, who keep making great games, in spite of Bethesda but no thanks to them IMO.
It's a great game with such an incredibly strong opening. There are also some wonderful grey choices you make and the ending was pretty awesome. Great game. Highly underrated.
Prey was one of the most amazing games I've ever played. The song "Everything is going to be okay" by Mick Gordon will always hold a special place in my heart.
Danny: "So unless you do speak french and english" Me: I DO SPEAK FRENCH AND ENGLISH!!! MY MOM ALWAYS SAID TO LEARN SPANISH BUT I KNEW I PICKED THE RIGHT LANGUAGE
"Unless you speak french and english, you're going to need to put on some captions" Oh man, feels weird to be in that specific category haha. Ouaaais Arkane vous êtes trop cool j'adore trop vos jeux et je fais tout le temps leur pub. J'ai même réussi à convaincre mon père à jouer à Prey ! Hâte de voir vos prochains projets ! (And shoutouts to NoClip as well while I'm at it !)
I hope we get a continuation about the development of redfall, I want the perspective of the people at the studio about that development cycle and what happened behind the scenes.
Dishonored is one of the best games i’ve ever played gameplay and story wise. so many memories made in such a refreshingly original world. Thank you Arkane!
Valve: cancels Adrian Shepard and Father Gregory spinoff made by great devs. Also Valve: permits a hackjob dev who stole assets to release a paid fanfiction starring Adrian's edgy brother.
IIRC there's a way to license the Source engine and assets (including Half-Life assets), but not the IP itself. If you look, HDTF never explicitly mentions "Half-Life" anywhere on the store page. Obviously in the actual game, it literally copy/pastes the characters and maps, but it's fair game for the license agreement they signed. Valve had no involvement outside licensing the Source engine out and selling the game on Steam - both of which it just lets any fucking loser do these days. It's the same thing that a lot of people have done to make mods or small games, but they never had any publicity - or the fucking nerve to charge money for their amateur shit. On the other hand, Valve was funding the Ravenholm project with their own money under the actual Half-Life IP. They would be in charge of marketing, funding, helping/directing the devs, etc. They probably didn't think the profit would make up the investment for a spin-off HL episode. It's easy to say in hindsight that it would've been great and sold tons of copies, but there was probably some justifiable reason in their minds at the time. Valve as a company is just a huge mystery to outsiders and terrible at communicating their decisions/business goals clearly, as we saw with the HL3 silent treatment, paid mods, Greenlight, etc.
Arkane studios has shown they put their heart and soul to everything they do. While I was introduced to Arkane through Dishonored and will always keep my hopes up for Dishonored 3, I am really excited for all new Arkane projects. Deathloop is the most anticipated game for me this year - along with Cyberpunk 2077 naturally. Anyway, let's hope we see Prey 2 or Dishonored 3 along the way as well.
Really great documentary as usual. You make the best content on youtube for fans of gaming and game design. It's so refreshing being able to see footage of unreleased projects from Arkane, id, etc.
I’ve replayed the first dishonored like 10 times, it allows for so much player choice and creativity that it’s a different experience every time. Dishonored 2 and Prey were excellent too.
Try Dark Messiah if you haven't. While there's less emphasis on stealth (though its still possible to do stealth builds), it is incredibly similar to Dishonored in terms of it's focus on "creative kills".
Arkane has a very special place in my heart. I'll never forget the memories I made in Dishonored and Prey. I still go back and watch the clips I recorded for old time's sake. Thank you so much for sharing their work with the world.
That is a stunningly good piece of work. I'm a child of The Looking Glass Aesthetic and Arkane have unsurprisingly become my favourite developers, so this was always going to be of interest, but the access you got and the in-depth coverage of things nearly lost to time..wow. Just hugely, hugely impressive. Liked and subscribed.
Honestly Arkane made a huge impact with Dark Messiah for me and I've always wondered how a studio with so much skill and potential was denied making a finished game over and over again. They've figured out how to do amazing physics, gameplay and animations with the Source engine like no other company did. Especially with the cancellation with Ravenholm I can't understand how they've looked at the progress and footage without giving them the recourses to develop it to the end. It was obviously a passion project and had so much more going for it in it's early alpha build. What a shame. I personally think Valve missed their chance to aquire Arkane to have an excellent Studio with deep understanding how a good game works. Even Alyx took ideas with the multitool and puzzles from their game. If they would've let Arkane work on Alyx it probably would've been much more dynamic and fun to play due to their way which they're designing dynamic, interactive games where the physics and environment plays an essential part of the game.
Very much looking forward to the full Prey documentary. I absolutely adore that game and have gone back to play it many times, now with mods to address some of the game's balance issues, but always playing through it multiple times in a row whenever I revisit it. I'm glad that a studio like Arkane is out there making shit nobody else will dare to do. All their games have something special to them.
One of the best studios in the world. Prey is a freakin masterpiece! I'm just afraid that due to their games not being best settlers their next games are gonna be coop/mp focused :(
Prey and Dishonored have become some of the games that defined my experience as a gamer. It really inspires me to hear how much Arkane loves making these games and also hearing how much the community loves them. Raf, Harvey, you guys are true legends.
35:21 love that Arkane Studios used Adrian Shephard from Opposing Force for one of their builds, however the developer says he's a Lieutenant instead of a Corporal in the USMC, as that was his standing rank in the HECU at the time of Opposing Force.
Growing up has stricken me with an egregious blow in my time and desire to play games like i used to, but shortly before I lost the itch, Dishonored crossed my path and impacted me a lot more than it should have. As a designer, artist, and dreamer myself, the game and Arkane's descendants have remained so important to me over the years that they're nearly the only games I play. I can't even explain in earnest why nothing else will satisfy. Most new stuff I try gets an hour or 2 before it gets binned, but the 4th or 5th playthrough of Dishonored gets it all. I'm grateful to have a bastion in Arkane's legacy and hope for many more years of their great work.
I remember finding a leather armor with some nice stealth buffs and a "G" on it, in my sneaky Dark Messiah play through. My suspicion that there are Thief fans at Arkane Studios was confirmed. A little research brought to light that Anthony Huso, the author of the Calendra's Cistern and Calendra's Legacy fan missions was involved. I should have guessed it by the crypt levels alone.
Noclip, not only you're the best at what you do, but you even gifted me with this "Ravenholm" gameplay, something i knew from a lot of time being a die hard half life fan, and something i would nevere imagine i would see in my life. Thank you (and thank you too Arkane for showing this and for Dishonored and Prey, i love you too and i like to think the Outsider character came to your mind when you were working, supposedly, with the G-Man).
We love you, Arkane. Your vision is second-to-none. Many of us will forever be dedicated to your works, whatever form they may take (although of course harbouring a special love for the immersive sim). Raphaël, thank you for all that you gave us. May the future bring you much splendour and inspiration. Harvey and the rest of the team: we can't wait to see what you'll surprise us with next. It's hard to express how much your studio and its creations mean to me. The worlds you've created will forever be of great value and joy to me. And to Noclip -- thank you, thank you, thank you, for featuring this developer and for doing such an absolutely stellar job of it! Smooches to all of ya!
Never in my life would i've ever imagined i would stand off my chair to give a round of applauses to a documentary video! I guess i'm really in love with Arkane's work, and i'm hopeful to see more of them in the future! Great job Danny & the whole team behind this!
This is your best documentary yet ! Arkane Studios is one of my favourite developers and seeing gameplay of The Crossing and Ravenholm just made my day. Thank you so much !
Arkane are one of my all time favourite developers. Sometimes I find something i love and then later discover they worked on it - like Bioshock 2 (which is also my favourite Bioshock). And as a Level Designer myself, I cant think of another developer that is as consistently brilliant with their levels. Making some of my all time favourites, which i constantly draw inspiration from.
Thank you noclip and Arkane making this documentary, it has made my day. I hope it receives some critical praise and recognition - it definitely deserves it.
Seriously NoClip, this might be your best work to date. And the quality of all your other documentaries put those seen on TV to shame. Hats off! (Or in French: chapeau!) Thanks to everyone involved into this documentary!
So Raph is basically the coolest era of Jean Claude VanDamme and Hugh Jackman / character Wolverine combined... I wanna be Raph... Truly, everyone involved and interviewed was beyond charming and amazing... but he just seems to be a wonderful individual. Joking about his obvious good looks and accent combo if JCVD and HJ, I mean... kidding as in, lol, its freakin true.. but truer yet is the fact that they all, himself included, seem quite genuine and truly a pleasure to know.
Arkane games are among my all-time favorites. If not for language barrier I would love to work there. They are making amazing games. Good job on another awesome documentary, Noclip!
I don't even care what state it releases in, I would do anything to play through an unfinished build of Ravenholm. The fact we finally have gameplay after years of rumours and leaks is amazing enough as it is, it's a damn shame it was never finished because it looks and sounds amazing.
I remember listening to Danny on Kinda Funny, he talked about dedicating all of his time to his documentary projects and it's taken me this long to actually look them up. I'm almost glad I took this long as I've got a whole back catalogue to watch. Awesome job, I'm now a Patron!
One of the best docs yet. I picked a perfect time to start supporting! Never knew how hungry and passionate this studio was, to keep giving it their all through several years of canceled, innovative games. I didn't know they existed before playing Dishonored, which became one of my all-time favorite games. I am so glad they stuck around! Can't wait for Deathloop.
I’m glad that such a passionate team makes their own project - Deathloop. We’ve been told already that the team was positively emotional when talking about Ravenholm, but that is genuine passion that I don’t think I’ve seen before from game devs (not that there isn’t anywhere else ever, but I haven’t seen it being expressed). I am so glad that I got into Arkane games, easily one of the very few respected and trustworthy studios. It was also a bit funny, that the guy with monotonous speech and who didn’t even smile after telling a joke, was in fact so emotional and passionate about the work he was talking about :)
This is easily one of the best yet - it somehow feels 'more' than some of the other big docs, to me at least anyway... The creativity and emotional depth over at Arkane really shows, excellent job!
Imagine not wanting to play one of the greatest environmental games ever, because "the luggage is huge" haha I never really thought about that, but it's a fair point, the luggage is indeed huge.
He's a Game dev/artist, something so invisible for people is visible for devs... and when something don't immerse you (design or story) at first glance you don't waste your time with a job like this.
Absolutely loved the entire dishonored series. The story, the style, the gameplay, the detailed somewhat Lovecraftian lore. Everything so good. I loved playing as all the characters - it was so good to be able to play as Emily - what a badass Queen! Also Billie's story was well done. A great addition! The time level mechanic and clockwork mansion are both incredible levels and show the incredible attention to detail that was put into the games. Bravo

I feel so bad for the french guy talking about ravenholm, he seems to still be so passionate about it and I'm sad it never got released.
i feel bad for the founder. with REDFAIL the company is over
46:30 He nails a zombie's foot to the ground, and it keeps at lunging and trying to attack the player. That's an amazing detail i've never seem done anywhere else. God, this looks amazing, i wish this game saw the light of day
PRECISELY. I was amazed as well. So cool that they keep this relic up and running after all these years.
Maybe somebody will leak it
well its in some games like just cause and some more, but for the hl’s age that is crazy impressive
Quite impressive mechanic for the time
Where is the headcrab?
I legitimately feel bad for the guys who wanted to make Ravenholm. Getting emotionally invested into something but not being allowed to finish has to suck.
I feel bad for the diehard anti-Bethesada mob who wilfully ignore the side of the company explored in this video.
Honestly, more than Ravenholm I'm now just pissed about The Crossing. Because what they showed here looks amazing. And you can see early style and development ideas that ended up in Dishonored
PREY is criminally underrated and it saddens me that it probably didn't sell enough copies for a sequel
I would have bought it but I’m not going to support companies using Denuvo.
I woulda bought it if i hadnt seen the original prey 2 😔
@Dutch 'Plan' Der Linde I heard it was supposed to originally be called "Neuroshock", but Bethesda wanted a more recognizable name which was "Prey"...
"That race for more technology, more content, shaders, more looks, etc... often comes at odds with that agility that we need to try quick, cool ideas."
Such a strong statement, and even stronger coming from the man who founded one of the studio that, in my opinion, shook up and even revolutionalized modern gaming in terms of design but also in terms of art.
Black Mesa is way more polished game than Ravenholm is in it's current state, it's very unlikely to happen
It would be so interesting if Arkane would just release it as a 'mod'.
@Jordan Ghill So, just because you don't like it, it's overrated? smh
Seriously. That electricity nail gun looks SO INCREDIBLE with all the gameplay possibilities.

This is always how I have felt when I played Dark Messiah as a young kid to when I replayed it as an adult, Compared to other games, even more popular games I always felt the atmosphere, the game itself, was a work of passion.
Same for me.
The Atmosphere in these games you don't find in another game
Same we need a dishonored 3

@@Uhkhjghugjufgh Thank you. Wish you the same.
Though, turns out, she wouldn't hate Corvo, she would just be influenced by high chaos in a negative way
I literally have over a thousand video games and Dishonored is top 3 of all time.
Something like:
1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2. Dishonored
3. Bloodborne

Low Chaos first try in 11 hours is quite the record. I think it took me like 6 hours to do the first mission. Turns out we had robbed the place alrdy, because you could go in a different way.
I´ve recently spend 3 hours analyzing the walls of light for a paper for uni and had the time of my life. The wayy all the pieces fit together in this game is just mindboogling!

Dishonored is one of all time favorite games, hyped for Deathloop
Did you play Mooncrash? I have a feeling Mooncrash is the prototype of Deathloop.

I haven't played HL:Alyx, but I've watched the playthrough (since I'm not likely to ever own a VR headset). But their bolt electricity thing in Ravenholm looks similar to what Valve did with HL:Alyx, just without the bolt part.
The music in that part was from Deus Ex Invisible War 😄
I wish LMNO didn't get canceled. That looked truly incredible -- the sound design and the look of the game...I can *literally* only imagine what it would look like with todays technology.
I'd love to see a VR version of Arx Fatalis 2, imagine being able to cast spells with your actual hands, it would be epic.
Or they just releasing The Crossing. Goddamn was that traversal mechanic cool.
Yeah, the short section in the Vault before the ending of HL: Alyx showed what it could feel like.
The new update (U8) of Blade and Sorcery is kind of like that. You can combine spells, use swords, and even kick.

I agree. They didn't promote Prey satisfactorily though. And the fact that it was a place-holder for the Prey IP is disgusting.
I agree with this. They may not be my favourite developers even in the best times where everyone loved them, but they are good publishers imho
Bethesda bought excellent studios, who keep making great games, in spite of Bethesda but no thanks to them IMO.
they need to let go off of Fallout.

Valve: cancels Adrian Shepard and Father Gregory spinoff made by great devs.
Also Valve: permits a hackjob dev who stole assets to release a paid fanfiction starring Adrian's edgy brother.
Unbelievable
sounds resonable

Arkane has a very special place in my heart. I'll never forget the memories I made in Dishonored and Prey. I still go back and watch the clips I recorded for old time's sake. Thank you so much for sharing their work with the world.
Prey is without a doubt my favorite game that I have ever played. I'm so thrilled that it is getting covered by NoClip!
What the hell happened to Valve? They blocked Ravenholm from being completed but allowed HDTF to be published?
That's a cool detail - but it also looks like the footage is from Blue Shift rather than op4?
What an awesome look inside a great studio, LMNO is quite an interesting idea, top work as always Danny and co.
seriously so excited to learn anything about LMNO so many years of curiosity

Never in my life would i've ever imagined i would stand off my chair to give a round of applauses to a documentary video!
I guess i'm really in love with Arkane's work, and i'm hopeful to see more of them in the future! Great job Danny & the whole team behind this!
I’ve been waiting for this story to be uncovered from the depths of the void. The Outsider smiles upon us
This is your best documentary yet !
Cannot wait for that Dishonored 2 Clockwork Mansion video.
Seriously NoClip, this might be your best work to date. And the quality of all your other documentaries put those seen on TV to shame. Hats off! (Or in French: chapeau!)
Thanks to everyone involved into this documentary!
I was anxiously waiting for this!
This is stellar Danny! As a huge fan of Arkane I am giddy learning more about their history. Thank you and Arkane for delivering this.
Arx Fatalis, one of my favourite childhood games! Also where I get my channel namesake!
Also where I get my birth name!
This is the highest quality documentary channel I've seen. Not just for games but in general.
Man, The Crossing was way ahead of its time.
Can we get a Redfall documentary now? How did they go to that from this?
Arkane games are among my all-time favorites. If not for language barrier I would love to work there. They are making amazing games. Good job on another awesome documentary, Noclip!
I don't even care what state it releases in, I would do anything to play through an unfinished build of Ravenholm.
The fact we finally have gameplay after years of rumours and leaks is amazing enough as it is, it's a damn shame it was never finished because it looks and sounds amazing.
Incredible doc - Noclip knocks another one out of the park. I can't wait to see the Dishonored and Prey docs this summer
These documentaries really are wonderful.
I remember listening to Danny on Kinda Funny, he talked about dedicating all of his time to his documentary projects and it's taken me this long to actually look them up. I'm almost glad I took this long as I've got a whole back catalogue to watch. Awesome job, I'm now a Patron!
Prey was amazing, played it several times and still go back to it on occasion
YES! THANKS FOR NOT DUBBING THE FRENCH PARTS!!! Love you guys and your work
Oh my God, finally! One of the best studio in existence!
Not finished yet, but WOW does The Crossing look awesome
Wow what an amazing doc! I wish all your docs were this long and in depth.
Imagine not wanting to play one of the greatest environmental games ever, because "the luggage is huge" haha
I never really thought about that, but it's a fair point, the luggage is indeed huge.
Bravo
