Ahhh man. Thanks so much for putting this together. I can't tell you enough how awesome it is to hear how our game affected people individually. It never gets old, really.
Pardon me while I'm a little starstruck, but how in the world did this reach you? I'm very grateful. Dang now I feel like a fool for cutting the portion of my script where I wrote to talk about your design philosophy with the symmetry and clear sightlines for early scouting of enemy movements: The real key to what made Gears of War’s multiplayer feel so Awesome is in the design of the maps. Every map is designed to have a level of symmetry with clear sightlines to promote early scouting of enemy movements. You know very quickly which direction enemies will be coming from and it’s your fault if you get blindsided. Each side gets its own key weapon, with an additional weapon or two placed squarely in a central location to be fought over. I didn’t realize this is what it was until I was doing the research for this video and I heard the Lead Level Designer Lee Perry explain it. [more notes written, not fleshed out]
@@icecoldsnakeYTI kind of stopped using Twitter awhile back, but realized there was an old mention about it someone posted that linked me to it. It was really well done, and just a kick ass little nostalgia fest watching the video and seeing all that old footage again... it's been awhile.
@@leeperry7068 oh thanks. That really means a lot. Your comment helped motivate me to finally finish writing a script for Gears of War 2. I'd been feeling really down on myself because I put a lot of heart into this GoW 1 video and the performance has been poor compared to my other videos. But now I remember the goal is to make a video I would want to watch that documents my experience and the rest will fall into place. I've watched all the documentaries so much while researching for the scripts. I never looked into any of this at the time. When the first game came out, I was 13. If it wasn't on G4 TV or in Game Informer, I wouldn't have known it. I can imagine from the Behind the Scenes documentary that it was a very rewarding in retrospect, but challengingly stressful in the moment.
Yes I did go through all the sniper montage footage and manually add in the headshot sound effects. What was your favorite memory of playing Gears of War?
Shotgun Snipers was my go to back in the day. I just loved how we would have to do some weird movement plus meleeing into thin air to initiate the duel lmao. Hitting those blind fire sniper headshots was the best feeling in the game.
From being randomly recommended your Endwar retrospective and now one for Gears of War. You're going through all my favourites it seems lol. Great stuff as usual love hearing your opinions on stuff and you have great sense of getting down to the actual meat of how it felt playing the game back then and just discussing the raw game feel.
Man the trilogy for me was definitely the best part of end of middle school going onto freshman of highschool. 2007-2013 to me was the golden era of gaming. Both single player and multiplayer
@@icecoldsnakeYTit's been a while but I remember Xbox had some digital download multiplayer games that absolutely slapped, there's so many that if I went back into my account I can totally find some ideas
Man, this was just such a beautiful thing to watch. I'm glad you covered the multiplayer especially, because it really was one of my favorite games on the 360. Kind of funny that I went from Socom 2 and 3 on the PS2, to the shot gun spamming Gears of War, but it was just so addicting. I really hope this gains some serious traction.
Here after the E-Day trailer and I’m so excited. The OG trilogy really was one of Xbox’s pure treasure pieces. And albeit not hating 4 and 5 as much as some people. I think Marcus at the helm again with Dom and witnessing everyone encounter the Locust for the first time. I’m stoked. And I hope The Coalition nail it. Solid video bro 🙏🏽
When I bought my Xbox one on Black Friday, I got a copy of Gears of War for free as well as the Xbox 360 games. I remember telling someone that for buying this one console I got 4 free games. And then I played Gears....and it did not click. I tried to play multiplayer and instantly someone told me to stick to single player. I didn't up the game after that and ended up playing Halo and Metal Gear Solid.
Oh god I remember the Dazzle and the Hauppauge -- arguably some of the worst recording hardware in history. I remember having to film with a camera too, man that's bang on. 10/10 lmao
I don't remember the Hauppauge. The webcam recording was just so classic though. Simpler times. I'm writing notes for the Gears of War 2 Retrospective and remembering that Xbox Live Party chats weren't even introduced until November 2008. It's so much easier these days with Twitch and UA-cam and Discord integrations on the consoles.
@@icecoldsnakeYT Hauppauge was basically the 720p version of the Dazzle, had 6 huge as cables. It's insane today how much easier it is to record and edit. So true on the Xbox Live party chats, those really revolutionized the way we hung out with our friends online. Great memories. :)
This is already great, but please god give the same love to Ace combat 6, the soundtrack alone changed my perspective on game soundtracks forever (as well as Halo 3)
Ace combat 6 is lit. But I don't remember it much. I remember #4 on PS2 more, and even then not much. I think I remember HAWX the most of any flight sim game.
Fantastic video!! really thorogouh and enjoyed each section you went through. Warzone was for scrubs though, the real men/women played execution 🤪 Also didn't know moistcritical's literal first video was a Gears sniper montage. Too funny!
First your Endwar review now Gears. I feel like we had the same childhood even taping the middle of the TV. I saw that you picked up Battlestations Midway. Please do a recap on that game.
God, the amount of awful games that either were inspired or rippoff's Gears of War was insane. I remember there was this game that came out right around the time of the Xbox One coming out only on the 360 and PS3 called FUSE I think? There was also some weird ones like a game with gravity abilities. Like that one was truly insane how much they made it seem like Gears.
My brother broke those custom ones that came with the Gears Xbox 360. I think I've only ever broken a joystick or made the battery pack too loose. Nothing major.
@@icecoldsnakeYT I remember breaking one controller out of anger. It was a nerf brand wireless ps2 controller. Yeah, nerf had a controller once covered in foam on every surface except buttons and joysticks. I broke that controller and never again because then I had lost 50 dollars. It stung just that much.
The writing was on the wall for Xbox all the way back in 2012 when they were trying to gaslight us into thinking it was okay to have an always online console, a required Kinect, and no backwards compatibility. Oh and that we should have to pay a microtransaction in order to play a used copy of a game.
