      LawriLuvsLemonade well it isnt a version of the English language. Thats like saying that french or chinese is the wrong way to use the alphabet.

    • @mariateresasatta
      @mariateresasatta 6 років тому +7

      Strange to hear this from an English speaker, because it's English that hasn't clear rules for the alphabet :P
      I studied English language for years, and still I don't know how to pronounce some words. I think that English writing is not alphabetic, but logographic: you have to learn the phonetic value of every word :D :D :D

      The Irish: Defying the laws of the English. Since the 12th century. ☘🇮🇪
      .......
      (The Irish language is older than the English language. We won't let some new fangled, undependable language come along & change our phonetics! "Eoi" is more reliable than "ough", all day every day. 👍🇮🇪☘🇮🇪☘🇮🇪)

  • @Murchad99

    This is important stuff. Speaking from personal experience, it's difficult to overcome having the name "Seamus" mispronounced phonetically by someone who'd had little interaction with Irish names, on-stage and on-microphone in a school auditorium filled with hundreds of fellow students. I'm still in therapy.

    Alright, interesting... so basically:
    aoi = ee (Caoimhe)
    mh = v
    c = k
    ai = ee (Ciara, Niamh)
    éa = ay
    eá = aw (Shawn)
    S = Sh (Sinéad, Séamus)
    ... and then a little googling occurred and thaught me it's not quite as easy as that. Isn't pronunciation a weird thing altogether? Silent letters all over the place, broad and slender vowels and consonants, diphtongs... tons of rules and even more exceptions - who can blame people for mispronouncing?

    Its not only Irish, is it? Welsh names are similarly overcomplicated, no? Is it a Celtic thing in general, would you say?

  • @bramblebop1904
    @bramblebop1904 4 роки тому

    Well, if you use too many letters picked at random and either silent or not pronounced as they normally are, don't be annoyed people don't say it right. Cillian, for example, C before I, e, y, is pronounced like S in every GD language known to man, so Silly yen. But no, it's Killan. Jayzus.

    • @peadarruane6582
      @peadarruane6582 4 роки тому

      Except where it isn't like in Italian where its pronounced Ch. Or in Classical Latin, that didn't have a soft C. or other Celtic languages like Welsh.
      Irish phonetics is totally consistent within its own rules, for example C is always a hard C. The same can't be said for English.

    ok so this might be a stupid question but what do Irish people do to celebrate st paddy's day?? in America people pretty much just drink I feel like and sometimes I get pinched if I'm not wearing green ... I'm just curious 😂

      @AdamMcIntyre  7 років тому +1

      abby rose wait? i've never heard of people being pinched before lol! i didn't know people did that. so, in ireland on st patricks day it's a huge deal, we have parades all day going throughout the entire town & everyone is out having a Guinness beer (whatever they want to u know lol) and a lot of mini pop up shops and events go on during the day!!

      And one thing we irish DO NOT do for dinner is Corned Beef and Cabbage. That is broke-ass, early American, Irish Immigrant food... with the main recipe being JEWISH, not Irish. At the time, many Irish immigrants to America where broke as hell and work was not easy come by - at least not anything that paid worth a damn. So their dollar had to go a very long way. Corned beef, at the time, was not only one of the cheapest meat products readily available in the US; due to its curing process, it tended to last much longer than any other meat, as well. Cabbage was - and still is - one of the cheapest vegetables you could buy. At the time, in America, Corned beef and Cabbage was a regular Jewish staple. However, the Irish quickly adopted it, added a few more potatoes to the recipe and, in time - in America - it quickly became synonymous with the Irish.
      Meanwhile, what do the real Irish people eat for St. Patrick's Day? What is the most traditional dish, in Ireland? Sadly, many Irish are unaware of how traditional it is. Most of the younger generations have completely forgotten and the tradition has faded a bit... or, at least, the reasons for it and it's origin. Consider this... perhaps I can even guide you to the correct answer ... St. Patrick was what religion? Many Irish are that same religion. What was one thing the Catholics did, on a global scale, every Friday ... eventually limiting it to Friday's during lent ... now only adhering to it on Good Friday? They did not eat meat. So chicken, lamb, pork, beef, etc was off the menu. So, what protein was still allowed to be eaten? You guessed it: fish! Although Shepherd's Pie is considered the most traditionally Irish dish, an American could ever consume, to honor the Irish and possibly his or her heritage; the most traditional Irish dish, in Ireland, to celebrate the day, would be: Fish-n-chips!

    • @peadarruane6582
      @peadarruane6582 4 роки тому

      The spellng is totally consistent with the rules of Irish phonetics, far more consistent than English in fact. Plus English has loads of 'extra' letters in many words that serve no purpose at all.

    Sorry to be annoying but some people pronounce my name like KWEE VA not KEE VA the second way for me is annoying as that to me is the incorrect way to pronounce my name and I personally find it bothersome.
