      you have know idea, where i'm from (Saudi Arabia) getting a job as a new graduate is almost impossible, companies want someone with experience, so our only choice is law firms, and the law does not support or protect law trainees. Basically, the graduates will look for a firm that pay them, because most law firms don't pay trainees any salary, of course once the trainee become hopeless of finding a job with a salary they will accept anything just to get some experience. i was lucky and found a firm that payed me a very good salary, but others weren't as lucky. I came by your channel as I have an offer to go to a company and become an in house lawyer.

    I'm also a an out-of-state licensed attorney trying to make it in a "non-traditional" legal work environment (in TX). Definitely has its challenges, but I'm glad to know I'm going through it with other attorneys who are not committed the "traditional" practice of law at a law firm. Thanks for posting, and being an encouragement!

    As a lawyer in GA, starting out by I only made $55k and currently make only $65k going into my third years of practice. Most in house jobs start off at six figures so starting out in house I would recommend rather than niching right out of law school. When you niche right out of law school, it’s hard to make a lateral move later because you only know one area of law.
    This video was very bomb though! Thank you! Trying to transition into in house counsel now

    Could you maybe do a video about different types of law and also if someone was to have a lot of experience in a certain type of law, which type do you think would look the best/be most useful if they wanted to switch professions, meaning what would really stand out on a resume?

    Hi Brittany. I happened to find your videos today, and I enjoy them so much. Thank you!
    When a student wants to become a transaction lawyer, is the person still required to take a litigation class in law school? Sorry if this is a stupid question. I don't know how things are in a law school.

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  5 років тому +2

      you don't have to take a litigation class but you will have to take some basic classes that touch on litigation if that makes sense. also, you may be forced to take a class related to litigation if you need credits and it works with your schedule. it maybe helpful to take things like negotiations.

    Hey Brittany, your channel is so helpful! I’m currently a 1L doing zoom university and I’m kinda wracked with anxiety since there’s not a whole lot of support right now. My classmates are really pushing a fake it til you make it mentality and I feel like I don’t fit in. Do you have any basic tips for an introvert like me to survive law school? Cold calls etc..

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  3 роки тому

      I think I've said this in other videos but I don't think it ever gets easier. I always got anxious before classes where they cold call on you and even though I try to be as prepared as I can be, there will always be areas where you don't know answers to questions etc. Just try to prepare for when you are called on and have your notes ready but there's not much else you can do. I'm sure like you said everyone else is anxious or clueless since law school is hard and you're learning how to do things that you're not used to. Just don't pay attention to everyone else and focus on learning the material. Also note there is a learning curve so it will take some time to get used to how law school exams work, briefing cases, reading cases etc. Don't be so hard on yourself if even for your 1L year you don't do that "well." It took me almost until my 3L year to get the hang of things and get "good" grades.

    Hey Brittany! Do I need a background in finance/business to be a corporate lawyer? I did my undergrad in philosophy and suck at math.

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  5 років тому +4

      nope! I'm really bad at math but am still a corporate lawyer. it also depends what type of corporate lawyer you are. there are obviously tax lawyers or ones that deal with stocks/equity and those probably have to do some math.

    Hello, Thank you for your informative video! I plan on attending law school and going into Corporate mergers & acquisitions law. Would it be possible for me to work at a big firm for 3-4 years then go in house? also will I be able to travel the world as a corporate MA lawyer?

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  2 роки тому +1

      yes you can definitely work for 3-4 years and go in house. it may be a bit harder than those that have been working at firms for longer but i've definitely seen it happen! you could probably take vacations and travel as a lawyer but i'm not familiar with corporate M&A to know if there is a lot of travel involved in the work itself.

    i don't understand. there is no getting back from in-house? what do you mean? I just graduated and got a in-house contract as a legal trainee. I mean it's the best way to start a career? getting a job that actually is a legal thing.. and later on my aim is to apply to a law firm or some minitstry-- hence with the current experience i might be able to score a place. usually ppl start up with nonsense, stuff that is not related to law -- only to get experience as a customer service persona or somethin round that.. but i definately think that as your first job in-house is just a door-opener, do u agree :2?

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  2 роки тому +1

      it sounds like you might not live in the US so I'm not sure since my experience is only with the US job market. My only point was sometimes people say if you start in house you won't get the law firm experience, which is good because it helps you focus on specific things and you get to be a really good expert. In house you are more of a generalist (depending on your first job) and sometimes that makes it harder for you when you want to change jobs because you might be competing with other candidates who are coming from law firms. It really depends on your in house job though. If it's really fast paced and you get a lot of exposure then you might have no issues changing jobs.

      if you can become a lawyer first I don't think you need to become a paralegal first. I think you could be a legal assistant as an internship or maybe before you go to law school or during but I don't think you need to before becoming a lawyer.

    Hi ! I just saw your video and was just wondering if you think that intellectual property is a good field to focus on for a person who is interested in going in house ?

    • @BrittanyTran
      @BrittanyTran  4 роки тому +1

      it could certainly be a good field since lots of in house attorneys deal with IP. I will say though that your job prospects will be a bit more limited unless you have IP experience + commercial experience. Most in house attorneys are smaller companies need to do multiple types of law and wear many hats. However, if you wanted to work at a larger company like Google for example they probably have tons of IP specific lawyers.
