Wonderful video ! However, Dickens didn´t grow up in poverty as his family were, for the main part, lower middle class, with his Dad, John Dickens, being a naval clerk. Yet, as you say, John did live beyond his means - such as taking his family way too often to the theater whilst becoming the inspiration for Mr Micawber - which is how he came to be in debt. As such, Charles had to give up his education whilst his elder sister Fanny, being a girl, was allowed to continue her music studies, whilst the rest of his siblings joined his parents in Marshalsea Debtors´ Prison. This, as his later letters show, really annoyed Charles, who clearly had a high regard of his own talents even then, especially as his Dad had always been encouraging them. On the other hand, it didn´t stop Charles empathizing with the poor around him, which was one reason why he became and remains so popular.

What is this scene from ‘Mary Poppins’ doing in a video on Charles Dickens’ life?

Sadly there's no actual clips available from his life, so I had to make do!
