Great Expectations - the 1946 movie - Directed by David Lean is a masterpiece - the cast - the music - the screenplay and the masterful direction of David Lean - you can feel Charles Dickens and the time is brought to life - glad I found it on DVD .
I have always loved watching and listening to documentaries about my heroes since I was a cheery catholic school boy. I idolise Dickens, and I was named after him, and I still keep lots of valuable vintage copies of his works to this day.
Thank you very much from my Mom and myself for uploading this wonderful documentary. I was interested in knowing about the man himself. I am so appreciative of his gifts to the world. and grateful to you too🥰
Our pleasure! So glad you enjoyed it, Joy! Although he may end up being mostly remembered for The Christmas Carol, there's so much else he accomplished. Thanks for watching.
For me David Copperfield is his best story following him through the troubled childhood to a young adult, the personal growth along the way, the way childhood characters return later as adults and the happy ending with Agnes are so satisfying. The Pickpapers, The Old Curosity Shop and Nicholas Nickleby have some of his funniest livelist and most imaginative characters and plots. Hard Times, Dombey and Son, Great Expectations and Our Mutual Friend have a bleaker tone and more ambiguous characters but also some bitting satire and more troubled love stories. A Christmas Carol is for me the most enjoyable read, short and punchy, it really drives its message home.
*"The Man Who Invented Christmas"* got me interested in reading, watching or listening to Dickens' stories. Learning that his life 'issues' (especially with his parents) influenced his writing of A Christmas Carol, and to some degree, Oliver Twist, has me curious about other stories and characters. Thanks for sharing the mini-documentary of a writer for those who love telling true to life stories.
What a lovely documentary, and I watch it these days while writing my own novel by hand, just like he did with ink. I was named after Dickens you know. And I am writing a novel all about a whole cast of characters most of whom have names just like the Dickens characters. I got my inspiration for some of them from the DVD's of his I have in my Novel--Inspiration--Archive in my study. I love his writing and I love reading just like he did all those decades ago when the world was in a way a lot safer and we had a proper police service.
I agree with G.B.S. that it is hard to distinguish which of Dickens' works is his greatest- because the are all great. But, my personal favorite will always be the Pickwick Papers.
I just watched a Walk documentary on BBC and it was based on him and his life. With an interest in writing myself and Having won The Literature price near my final year in secondary school based on some of his works, I was interested in any movie about him. Read quite a bit on Wikipedia about him, his loves, and his 10 children. (4/6/2023.) .
Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852) who was best known for as His Grace The 1st Duke of Wellington, became a Prime Minister in 1828. He was Commander at The Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
sadly i didn't read the book, but loved to watch the movies and tv movies based on this novel, loved the roman polanski's oliver twist...i hope i shall read the book soon
Staple, pronounced that way and not "Stapple", is situated on one of the straightest stretches of track in the UK; the picture rather misleading. A tragedy where a work team had actually removed a length of rail. I agree about the music being mostly inappropriate but otherwise thanks, most enjoyable.
I LOVED DICKENS UNTIL HE BELIEVED OUR INUIT WERE THE ONES WHO WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR FRANKLIN'S DEMISE. NOW AFTER FINDING HIS SHIPS, HE WAS AS WRONG AS POSSIBLE LIKE MANY BRITS OF THAT TIME!!!
In those days it didn't matter the family could afford it or not they would just pop out a child every year! Today couples are cautious, and thoughtful, no children!
A terrible pedestrian commentary..he simply avoids any intelligent analysis of Bleak House which is Dickens most complex and profound novel..it's all gungho! for Great Expectations as is rightly expected but his comments are really rather glib.
Charles Dickens sense of compassion and honor makes him my favorite author. He cared when others did not.
I've read many of his works and to this day, I read them again.
As a Writer Magnificent. As a husband absolutely appalling. He died much too young. Favorite Novel Great Expectations
You were married to him? No , then why call him what you read, not fact!

That movie was beautifully photographed.

So many wonderful Novels by this Precious Writer.

Unless I'm fooling myself, this is a really well done peace and I'm quite surprised that there aren't really any comments on it.. Rather strange
he was a great writer
But an AWFUL person and narcissist

Charles Dickens a beauty of illustration and a timely effect of our present time. Thank you.
Well done, simply one of the best I have ever watched on Dickens!

Beloved a life truly worth living, He was exceptional.

My favourite- A Christmas Carol.
Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852) who was best known for as His Grace The 1st Duke of Wellington, became a Prime Minister in 1828.
He was Commander at The Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
Robert Peel (1788-1850) was the Founder of the first new Metropolitan Police Force at Scotland Yard in 1829.
brilliant very concise and very complete thank you.
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.
19th December 1842.
This is so well done. Thank you. from 🇺🇸
sadly i didn't read the book, but loved to watch the movies and tv movies based on this novel, loved the roman polanski's oliver twist...i hope i shall read the book soon
Friend of Mankind, but no friend of the mother of his children. Whatever happened to Mrs Dickens?
She left him!
Did you see the picture of his wife!
What is that beautful violin symphonic music? It starts in the middle portion of the documentary.
I'm presently halfway through the Pickwick Papers, very funny indeed.
Excellent ❤️
Great! ❤
The cared about everyone but his wife.
Indeed.
She was apparently only a brood mare for him.
@@eunicestone6532 That's what I'm looking for.
Genious ❤
That house looks anything but modest, probably set you back a cool £750k which is 3x more than the average house price in England. Not that modest.
Staplehurst Rail Crash June 9th 1865.
Thanks.
Great video, thank you very much , note to self(nts) watched all of it 57:05
So, how come John continually got himself into debt? You never said why. Did he gamble?
We did not hear anything about the greatest of Dickens’ novels GREAT EXPECTATIONS (1861)!!!
Was mentioned 4 times in the first 5 minutes.
@@mikeheap7978 mention is nothing…it is his best novel and deserves far more attention
Listen again. There was comment on it
Oliver Twist.
David Copperfield.
I could not continue to listen because of the irritating background noises.Such a pity!
I love Dickens and this video is a fine biography, but I can’t listen to the interlude music any longer.
I'm with you. The music is wholly unnecessary and distracting.
I LOVED DICKENS UNTIL HE BELIEVED OUR INUIT WERE THE ONES WHO WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR FRANKLIN'S DEMISE. NOW AFTER FINDING HIS SHIPS, HE WAS AS WRONG AS POSSIBLE LIKE MANY BRITS OF THAT TIME!!!
Dickens was the best but his books except Pickwick were well written Nightmares.
In those days it didn't matter the family could afford it or not they would just pop out a child every year! Today couples are cautious, and thoughtful, no children!
When was this made?- ah 2006.
why the weird music and interludes?
Overrated.
Over-stylistic and too fanciful.
(For a better writer, we had to wait for Tolstoy or Dostoevsky or Jane Austen or Franz Kafka.)
The music ruins this.
A terrible pedestrian commentary..he simply avoids any intelligent analysis of Bleak House which is Dickens most complex and profound novel..it's all gungho! for Great Expectations as is rightly expected but his comments are really rather glib.
