Hello from India! I started collecting in mid-late 90s and the Joes sold here were made by Funskool so varied a bit. Spearhead was my first figure when I was 7-8 years old and I remember it being much darker with a green backpack and helmet. Love ur vids! Brings back so many memories!

Yay finally a review of my favorite Joe. I had this one as a kid and its stuck with me as a fave. Thanks for the review.

His knife looks like a Roman Gladius short sword.

+Thor13332 As I said above, perfect for Serpentor, who gets much of a gladiator evocation in his design.

Another thorough and entertaining review. Although bright orange he still rocks!

I can only theorize someone at the company got an advance look at the Saco Crossfire combination shotgun/rifle...and designed his weapon as an upgraded, Joe-ified version of that. With a 5.56 assault rifle, a semi-auto shotgun, and a big Arkansas toothpick style knife, and a bobcat, I suppose Spearhead has everything he needs to deal with Cobra and the wilderness. I agree, the orange is a bit much, but besides that and the backpack he's well-done. The lack of detail on the bobcat is a minus--Junkyard got two colors, right, why not Max?

Great review, you are the number 1 Joe figure reviewer on the web in my opinion. I was excited to get this figure as a kid but when the package was opened it was discovered he had come broken, much to my disappointment. Never did get another one either.

He goes well with the Dessert Fox vehicle as the cannon operator. Or machine gun. Not sure what that was?

    Hi Kevin.
I think 1988 Spearhead's short sword fits perfectly to 1986 Serpentor figure. I think all of us are somehow disappointed that 1986 come with not an enough powerful weapon beside the OK dagger he does have.
This 1988 Spearhead's sword make the perfect weapon for him. Actually, is not so suitable to 1988 Spearhead, as it would to Serpentor.
Give it a try, it does suit him!

Looking at the decor on the knife, it looks more like a spear tip with a knife handle.
    Great job as always Kevin!

I'd already quit collecting the figures by 1988, I still owned a few of the later vehicles, but I was always a sucker for any figure that had a animal.
BTW, kevin, have you ever watched a show called face off? it's a fx make-up show on the sci fi channel. last week they had to do a fx make up that would make a great gi joe action figure.

I've seen highlights of the episode, but its mostly creature make-up rather than outfit design, which is what I would rather see. The Snake Soldiers theme is better used for Cobra-La or Valor Vs. Venom, rather than classic GI Joe.

Great review! Regarding the bandolier, Spearhead could be hauling extra ammo for a machine gunner like Repeater.

Blaze orange camo, does the file card say he is from Michigan? looks like a Michigan deer hunter to me. Would be an awesome figure if they toned down the orange.

That rifle design is just sad. As it stands, it also has two bolts operating one behind the other which would block the barrel and make it impossible to use both mags. Two barrels on top of each other and separate triggers would make more sense (M16/M203/shotgun).
