Final Cut Pro X and Lightroom CC are the two apps that I use.
If you pay attention to the battery conditions here, you can see that the 8gb version has a high battery consumption. I watched a few more videos. There are big differences in battery usage. CPU is constantly memory swapping. That mean your battery will drain fastly on 8gb. Be careful with this if you are going to do these things while traveling.
I like it a lot, that you listened to criticism regarding the initial video and corrected the test cases accordingly. Shows, that you guys actually do care. Great :)

the 16gb M1 is sold out everywhere where I live but my old 2018 mac's screen just broke...tryna decide if I can make do with 8GB on the M1 MBP, or if I should go with an M2 Air (also 8GB-but the newer chip and slimmer form would be nice, but im worried about thermal throttling). I do photography and video work part-time, but i'm also a student. We have extremely powerful desktops at my school for pro video work that I can book, but I need something for my own freelance work too that'll hopefully last me through all my BA and MA studies. I pretty much use Lightroom and Photoshop weekly. Would love some insights if someone could push me in the right direction!
Thanks for this comparison, it helped more than anything else I could find. I canceled an order for a MBA with 16GB RAM and 512GB of storage and ordered the base model instead. My future proofing will be an M2 Macbook Pro in a couple years, just really needed to replace an older Macbook Pro now.
@@richard6812 My wife (the primary user) has been very happy with the base MBA. It does everything she needs well and photo editing is fast, fast enough that the first time she used the M1 MBA she thought it had glitched as nothing happened. Turned out it had exported the 10-15 raw photos so fast she never noticed it processing.
I assume Apple adds more GPU power. Right now only one monitor can be plugged in. As such many pros can't use it yet. If they do just that, it will be great hardware.
@@stevemuzak8526 new MBP16 costs the same as the MBP15. These CPUs are cheaper to make and need less RAM, so the price might go down for entry level spec and the same but with higher spec. This is what Apple does recently. Apple's business model hanged more towards software so they need as many people in their ecosystem as possible.
@@stevemuzak8526 I suspect that Apple will sell them at the same price model for model as today based on these three Computers. 5 nm chips are likely to be very expensive to make and the fact that apple has reused 7 core GPU near fails, implies this to be true. However, a 40 % or more performance increase would exceed all the none-pro machines Apple currently builds as well as equal a number of the very expensive pro machines. I estimate that the 16 GB mac mini I have on order is going to give me something close (80 %) to the performance of the 3.8Ghz core i9 processers in the top end consumer iMac. It seems 16GB integrated is equivalent 32 GB standard Intel, then thats a £2,000 + cost saving for me. If I needed real top end performance a £2,500 M1X iMac equivalent might perform something like a low end pro model at £5,000 +. Thats not a bad trade off IMO.
re swap with free mem: macOS carries over behavior from BSD. It will preemptively page-out data that is not used, even when RAM is sufficient, to avoid having to page-out when demand suddenly increases. That's the behavior you are seeing. It made sense back in the day when computers had little RAM and disk paging was frequent, but Apple has never eliminated the behavior.
Page out but duplicated in RAM, so if more ram is suddenly needed the RAM can be cleared instantly, not having to wait for it to be paged before clearing. Definitely a good thing, keep it.
@@pflaffik for small memory sizes for sure, but if in have a Mac pro with 192gb of ram , I don't want the OS to cache in my ssd if its leaving 90gb free, especially if I know my workloads and their requirements. This is what Max mentioned. It is possible to disable it. For 8gb or 16gb on a non workstation though, it is good to let it run for most people.
@@gn0s1s The swap usage also corresponds to memory usage. If you're using 80% of 8GB it's less urgent than 80% of 64GB, for example. I still think they could tweak it to consider raw numbers though, as systems with more RAM can perform worse, as the video shows.
I would love to see 7 core vs 8 core GPU MacBook air test. Especially testing CPU to see if they are indeed higher quality in the 8 core/non binned versions
Great follow up video, thank you guys for being so responsive! The only thing left I wish I could see would be gaming performance for the kind of games a lot of us like to play on a laptop (WoW, League of Legends, Heroes of the Storm, DotA2, Fortnite, etc).
Don’t feel bad. I bought a MacBook Pro 13 inch base with 512GB last week😂 luckily for a very good deal! I’m selling it this week with some profit to buy the MBP or MBA
That Mac is so much better in other ways than the new 13.3” Macbook Pro. 6 speakers, better cooling, much better GPU. I ordered the new Macbook Pro M1 with 512 gb and 16 gb ram (which will actually be too much for me), because I don’t want to be tempted to buy a more expensive Macbook Pro when those will belaunched with a Silicon processor. Haha.
@@secretscipio bought it second hand. It is 1 month old with 4 battery cycles for €1000,- which is really cheap. They are new still €1499,- or something like that.

You're on fire! Again your videos confirmed my hesitant purchase of the Air 8GB/512GB. I would only be using the portable travelling, or webinars with Lightroom. I can't imagine ever having a ton of big apps open at the same time. When Apple brings out the M pro versions I'll choose RAM added options to replace my iMac 5K.
As someone who has a i7 8700k with a 2080 Ti... I noticed I stopped playing games on PC a year ago, and just use my PC for web browsing and Lightroom edits. I went with a M1 Pro with 8GB RAM and 512GB storage, I use a external 6TB WD blue drive 3.5" drive docked, as my storage device. I went with the Pro for the brighter screen and bigger battery, its worth the extra price.
Great video! I think a comparison between 8GB and 16GB while gaming would also be very interesting to see! Just to see if the extra RAM equals more fps in some games.

@@rowangraham7711 Hey there! To be honest, I'm doing very light editing so the 8gb of ram works great for me. I use it for work mostly, so I run zoom through the machine and have zero issues at all. Also Apple may be releasing one with a 32gb option so you could wait for that if you can...or get a PC haha but whatever you end up with, I hope it makes you happy friend :)
@@McDagger90 Thanks very much for replying! I’ve watched some comparisons and also, in light of your comment, I believe I’ll get the 16gb version as I’ll need it to last at least a few years of (not particularly light) educational use and 32gb is a bit overkill for me haha. Thanks again :)))

@Forest Cityy I think this channel did a test on the music production laying multiple tracks over to see the performance. Check that one out. Also this basic model is enough in my opinion because it can't project into 2 screens automatically and also 2 usbc ports might not be enough if you have many output adapters. So there is no need to upgrade to 16gb ram or something.
Photoshop, Xcode, Final Cut, 50 tracks in Logic, 4 tabs in Safari & 20 tabs in Chrome running simultaneously...silky smooth? These machines are BANANAS. Even under an immense load (giggity) the differences were negligible or non-existent. I’m definitely getting the 8gb model.
Welp, this answers my questions. I actually use my Mac with lots of heavy applications running at once (usually various IDEs) for school, work, and personal projects. That the 16 GB model handles a similar workload so swimmingly is amazing to me! I’m floored and blown away. I’ve got one on its way. The mail cannot come fast enough!
This excellent comparison matches my experience. There is only one application where 16GB makes a huge difference: Parallels. Trying to run Windows inside Parallels on an 8 GB Mac is a nightmare because if you don’t allocate at least 8GB to Win10, it just won’t run properly. On a 16GB Mac, you can allocate 8GB to the Mac and 8GB to Win10 and everything runs super smoothly. And the latest Beta of Parallels for M1 is VERY good. Apart from that, 8GB is really sufficient for most people because most people don’t go crazy and keep all these apps and tabs open all the time. Those 8GB M1 Macs are amazing.
Years ago I worked with a guy who was a keyboardist in a band, and he could actually play two different songs at once, one with each hand. Mind blown! But, I'm so uncoordinated like that, that stuff like this impresses me too, LOL.
And what about a stress test comparing Air M1 16GB vs Pro M1 8GB? It would be interesting as they cost the same with the 8GPU cores and 512 ROM. Thank you for you videos!
You really deserve to have more than a million followers, and this is something I have already seen more than once people commenting here, and it is because you really deserve it! Thank you guys!

@Asadullah Al Galib I just bought the 8GB/512GB MBA. I'm a developer too, running VSCode, multiple browsers, terminals, etc at once. Yet to see a single lag. The optimization on M1 is phenomenal.
@@100100freak I haven't tried any serious photo/video editing yet. I do web development most of the time. Although I often need to make logos, vectors, quick animations for my web projects. I'm writing this on my 2012 Macbook Pro and I will go for the 16Gb M1. Probably now 8Gb is enough, but with so many online video work lately, probably soon the extra cost will make sense. If my new M1 lasts the same 8 years of hard work it will be worthy. Thanks for both 8 vs 16 Gb M1 videos, they were very helpful.
Thanks for this. This video really helped ease my concern. I went with a base Mac mini m1 after my 2011 27 inch IMac had enough. I upgraded the ram in that and had 2TB’s of storage. It’s main job was photo editing with LR and PS and basic computing. Hearing how great the M1 mini was, I was sold on it pretty fast. Having a keyboard and mouse, the price made sense and made even more sense when I got a refurbished model. I now have a new setup for a little over 1k. Hearing some people talk about it, they act has if you need 16G’s for anything other than basic computing and even though your test are to the extreme, it shows the 8G version can definitely handle a solid workload. With my needs of simple photo work, paired with a decent external SSD, I feel it’ll be great. The other great part about the mini is the price, it’s relatively cheap for its performance brand new, but refurbished you really have a deal and when an upgrade happens, rather that’s the M2 or something else, you won’t feel bad about jumping on that at all since you’re already set up for it. My guess is, I’ll probably end up with an upgraded mini sometime next year due to the fact that it’ll probably just be amazing.
I exported a 4k 30fps with luts colour correction, custom transitions and effects 11 min clip exported in final cut x in just 13 min blown away!! I have the macbook pro with M1 8 core 16gb ram and 1tb SSD.
Great comparison, some of us will always go for the in between models, like instead of 8gb get the 16gb and also not get the 32gb I always will find myself that buying the lowest model will not only make me feel I could do better & give me a reason to buy more in the future even just to feel better, but I also don't want to throw my money away and get the high end ones. by getting the 16gb I will feel like I don't have the urge to get something better in the next few years, if I get the 8gb I may be tempted to still get the 16gb model in the future which will end up costing me more (of course since I can afford it) if I couldn't I would probably have no choice but to go for the 8gb model or even worse get the intel based model at a very cheap price as they are dropping in price a lot now that the M1 is out

@@jackscandrett123 Chances are that if you’re a light user or someone that has other devices to store things on you won’t need extra storage than the base 256GB. You can always use an external drive for files that you can’t store in the cloud because paying apples rates for storage isn’t economical at all especially considering that you can get a pretty good 1TB SSD and usb c connector for around 150. Of course if you know you really need that storage and you don’t want the hassle of keeping drives and dongles with you then the only alternative is to spend the extra money.

Facts. Is the 8GB fine?
If you pay attention to the battery conditions here, you can see that the 8gb version has a high battery consumption.
I watched a few more videos. There are big differences in battery usage. CPU is constantly memory swapping. That mean your battery will drain fastly on 8gb. Be careful with this if you are going to do these things while traveling.
no i have 16 gb of ram and my battery drains most fastly than others persons which have the use model
And where did you find this videos please ?
This is false
I like it a lot, that you listened to criticism regarding the initial video and corrected the test cases accordingly. Shows, that you guys actually do care. Great :)

@@lfcastillov1027 depends on what you plan on doing with it. I use it mostly for work and use cloud storage for 99 percent of files. So, 256gb of storage is fine by me.

I have 64 GB of ram and I close tabs all the time. I got 64 GB (2x32) 3600 MHZ for $230 for my pc build. Ain't got to pay that Apple Tax. That Apple Tax is steep AF. Also it isn't soldered to the board.
the 16gb M1 is sold out everywhere where I live but my old 2018 mac's screen just broke...tryna decide if I can make do with 8GB on the M1 MBP, or if I should go with an M2 Air (also 8GB-but the newer chip and slimmer form would be nice, but im worried about thermal throttling).

How did this work out? Are you happy with the purchase and what do you use now?
@@richard6812 My wife (the primary user) has been very happy with the base MBA. It does everything she needs well and photo editing is fast, fast enough that the first time she used the M1 MBA she thought it had glitched as nothing happened. Turned out it had exported the 10-15 raw photos so fast she never noticed it processing.
Please edit just a 30+ minute video in 4K on Final Cut and show if we need 16gb or not. Thanks.

I can't imagine the performance when they release 14 inch and 16 inch with m1x or m2 or whatever it will be called.
4 more performance cpus and 4 more GPUs. I guess at least 40 % better still.
@Abitamim Bharmal Don’t forget that the 3000 ppl working in the Apple Silicon team works for free too.
re swap with free mem:
macOS carries over behavior from BSD.
Linux and Windows does that as well. Swap usage is not a good metrik, you need to look at paging rates instead

Impressed by the efficiency of the 8GB model. But do you think next softwares/updates (for Apple Silicon) will use more Ram in the next 5/6/7 years ?

I went with the Pro for the brighter screen and bigger battery, its worth the extra price.
Is the blue drive SSD? Could send me the Amz link for it? Thanks n

@@rowangraham7711 Hey there!
To be honest, I'm doing very light editing so the 8gb of ram works great for me. I use it for work mostly, so I run zoom through the machine and have zero issues at all. If you're going to be performing heavy tasks on it then I would recommend the 16gb. If it's for leisure/pleasure use then 8gb is more than enough I think.

Welp, this answers my questions. I actually use my Mac with lots of heavy applications running at once (usually various IDEs) for school, work, and personal projects. That the 16 GB model handles a similar workload so swimmingly is amazing to me! I’m floored and blown away.

Keep up with your work. Your videos are so fresh and not repetitive. Hoping to see that 1 million mark soon !
The video I want to see how the M1 runs on Blender in EEVEE/Cycles, And also how it performs on the GPU and CPU? Thanks.
The thing that stunned me, was that you are able to you use two trackpads with both hands at the same time 😳
Years ago I worked with a guy who was a keyboardist in a band, and he could actually play two different songs at once, one with each hand. Mind blown! But, I'm so uncoordinated like that, that stuff like this impresses me too, LOL.
This is now my default channel for tech videos! Thanks for all the great content!👏👏
And what about a stress test comparing Air M1 16GB vs Pro M1 8GB? It would be interesting as they cost the same with the 8GPU cores and 512 ROM. Thank you for you videos!

I want the 16GB model but it’s so hard to wait for them to be in stock again
what'd you do then?
What did you end up doing?!
I exported a 4k 30fps with luts colour correction, custom transitions and effects 11 min clip exported in final cut x in just 13 min blown away!! I have the macbook pro with M1 8 core 16gb ram and 1tb SSD.
Great comparison, some of us will always go for the in between models, like instead of 8gb get the 16gb and also not get the 32gb
I always will find myself that buying the lowest model will not only make me feel I could do better & give me a reason to buy more in the future even just to feel better, but I also don't want to throw my money away and get the high end ones. by getting the 16gb I will feel like I don't have the urge to get something better in the next few years, if I get the 8gb I may be tempted to still get the 16gb model in the future which will end up costing me more (of course since I can afford it) if I couldn't I would probably have no choice but to go for the 8gb model or even worse get the intel based model at a very cheap price as they are dropping in price a lot now that the M1 is out

how about the storage? should it be upgraded?
@@jackscandrett123 Chances are that if you’re a light user or someone that has other devices to store things on you won’t need extra storage than the base 256GB.
