I have family in Kokomo and visit quite often. I know the line crossing US 31 sees seasonal grain loads, and the depot downtown still has several units sitting there. Everything else in town looks terrible. Overgrown and falling apart. I still notice tank cars appear and dissapear from behind a mall though.
I was returning from college at Ball State in 1971 and had to wait on a Penn. RR train at Hemlock (gone now). It was coming from Elwood/Anderson en route to Kokomo. Tracks are gone there now.
I remember seeing this in about 1988 or so when NS still owned and operated it. Also at that time Conrail still came into town to service the scrap yard and the Delco plant.. Things are so different now and a lot of the then in service track is rusted and unused..
finding this video was a great discovery, for anyone who has played Train Sim on IOS/Android, it’s the horn of the CP GP38. This is where that horn comes from!
After living in Kokomo for several years, I can finally tell where all these clips were taken. Weird to see anything going west of the interchange on the Cloverleaf!
That same stretch of track at the beginning is in sad shape now. no trains use the stretch from Kokomo to Frankfort, anymore. I understand that NS uses the Kokomo-Marion stretch for trips to/from Kokomo Grain, though.
I lived in Howard Co. during the 50's, 60s and 70s and remember several times seeing trains in West Middleton, Russiaville and Forest in Clinton Co. Our best friends lived in NE Clinton Co., and I remember being at their farm near Forest and watching NP trains crossover the farm en route to Kokomo from Frankfort/Lafayette. Those were the days!
Does any body still operate the line? Google maps didn't show any cars or engines in the area? Sure is a neat setup with all the street running and switch backs.
So about one or two years ago they were suppose to reopen the tracks from Tipton to Kokomo for grain trains. I know they cleared the brush off the tracks in Kokomo but have they done anything else since then?
I live east of Swayzee on the cera line and the Cera is still open and running from Kokomo to Marion The trains are farely short but runs most days. They are also using NS power to pull grain cars to and from kokomo.I have also been told that Kokomo grain owns the Kokomo to logansport line and also own the Kokomo to tipton line which is going to reopen. from what I have been told all cars will be pulled down the cera line 3 NS engines just came by pulling about 90 cars from Kokomo.
@mononc420 I am sorry; this is all I have on video of this operation so far. I did get some snapsnots of a trio of high-nose GP30's leading a train from Swayzee to Kokomo is 1995. The tracks were in such TERRIBLE shape that probably could have walked alongside that train! Sadly, my video camera was in the shop at the time.
I worked for CERA as a signal maintainer. The signal mentioned a couple of times is called a tilting target. Depending on which way it was tilting determined which line had the right to cross. If it was lined against you the trainman could get off and move the target and then proceed.
This must have been in the late 80s or 90s. Those cars are so old now. But sweet. Love the small towns. I wonder what condition its in now, 20 years later.
Part of this was the east to west Cloverleaf line (Nickel Plate RR) from Toledo to St. Louis. At Frankfort, In. the line split to Lafayette where the line could continue west to Kansas City.
Around 1987 Norfolk Southern began retiring their GP30s and GP35s. Some were parted out, some were traded in, and some were sold to short lines. Along with the remainder of the SD35 and SD45 fleets over 500 units were disposed of during that time. Conrail was also retiring similar locomotives as well resulting in all 567 powered locomotives off both rosters by the end of 1991.
I love it when railfans post videos like this and the first thing they say is "Horrible Railroad Tracks". Then they don't understand why railroaders want them to go away.
That and the Trespassing on the tracks in order to get better photo or video ops of the other locomotives on the property as seen in the video is also enough to piss off any railroad as well.
That railroad is in deep financial trouble! Look for it to close very soon! Then, there always ways the financially desperate people can, "help it along to it's inevitable closure!"
its not going to close it has 90% more companies on it and if any finically desperate people like you come near you probably will get shot by the local pd.
only difference is that highways, canals, and airports are funded with tax dollars which seem to be embezzled by the fucking crooks running the country. Freight Railroads pay out of there own pockets with little to no help from the government with what's left after being robbed in paying outrageous taxes.
onrr1726, Every city and county in the nation through which railroad tracks pass lets out a scream like a pig having its throat cut when a railroad company tries to abandon track that hasn't made any money for the company in decades. Tennessee made the cities and counties stop assessing extra high tax rates on railroad property.
They know how to build railroad tracks. However, this line serves a few grain elevators in farming communities. No need to have high speed trains for an operation like this. Europe does have great trains, but they are built to do something dramatically different.
may not be up to class 1 railroad main line standards but I have seen a lot worse indeed. check out these video's ua-cam.com/video/TrvLK24VlEs/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/Pfp7dabTX3I/v-deo.html I am sure the crews operating these trains would love to see some the bad track your talking about LOL
Thanks for posting this video! My dad worked for Central railroad. I believe that's him in the cab. 🙂
No problem! Thanks for the support!
Just amazing that a fellow railfan was so lucky to get the CERA on video! Thank you very much for adding this on youtube! Great video!
Love those old units still earning their pay.
train order signal at 1:15 was still in service? looks like it was. man is that cool.
I am convinced that Southern railway high hoods have the best sounding horns ever made.
Thanks for watching!
Bent and weedy branch lines - my favorite.
Maw railroad would take a look and say " dam we could highball on that!"

We could of but never did
Idk what you’re on but most of the maw is 3-5 mph

Heck, those tracks are just fine, by Pan Am Railway standards!

When did Conrail stop using the line to Delco? Didn't they cut the line back to Nevada prior to that?
That is a cool place to film a train. Awesome video!

Thanks for compliments and thanks for watching!
0:06 sounds like a VRE horn
Thats a real look back in time, wish these were still around!

And the GP40 the SD40 and GP30/35 in soo line action red

The horn in the beginning sounds like the IPhone app Train sim, I forget which engine
Like the producers just ripped the audio
The first blast was used in "Train Sim" by 3583 Bytes and is used on the GP locomotives in the game.
The tracks are more than fit for service.
@ 1:30 what is that up there it looks like part of a crossing gate arm or a utility pole crossbar...
The MAW tracks are far worse i think...

Haven't heard anything for well over a year now. The old track in rural Tipton County is still the same with brush covering most of it.
Doug Badgley ah okay wasn't sure if they were going to still reopen the tracks or not
@@pruitt3507 they are working with G&W on a plan to reopen it as of 2020, but it looks like it may not work out

Not one railroad served industry left in this town, it's become another bedford Indiana. They should leave the rails in though for the future.
Do you have any more videos of the central?

So the GP-30's with the chevrons on the nose are CERA? Good footage-love to see the ex-Southern stuff
Some of that track is no longer used.
those tracks are perfectly fine
Nice rail.
o thats where the train sim off the app store game get that horn from

What kind of horn is that?
I think an Old Cast P5.

Very little business equals very little money. So, are you going to pay for fixing up the tracks so there is no wobble to get nothing in return??

horrible track with old locomotives!
Our nations railroads, like our highway systems, in disrepair.

Govt has been trying to kill off the railroads since the 1950s.. Whats going to happen when we DO run out of oil????????
Go back to coal fired steam locos. :)

Either (hopefully) go back to steam or (possibly not hopefully) go all out electric.
time to laern to build a railroad track, for exsample in Europe in Zwitserland/Germany/The Netherlands...about safety.lol.
