  • Democracy is under threat across the globe. So too is journalism.
In this Decoder Dialogue, we look at the role of journalism and quality reporting in defending democracy, informing citizens and upholding the principles of a just, fair and democratic society.
What role does journalism play in defending democracy? How have changes to the landscape of journalism and information creation affected political and societal realities in countries worldwide? And why is it important to defend quality reporting and reporters?
Join us for a roundtable discussion on the role of journalism in defending democracy featuring youth voices from across our network in conversation with subject experts Alexandru Ciocan and Helen Womack.
    -----------------
Alexandru Ciocan is the editor-in-chief of Gen, revistă, a youth-led, youth-focused online magazine run by an editorial team of young people in Romania. He has also worked with a number of media literacy and civic engagement projects for high schools at Forum Apulum including Mobile Stories. Formerly, he was a language and literature teacher.
Helen Womack is a career journalist, editor and writer. From 1985 to 2015, Womack reported from Moscow for the Reuters international news agency as well as The Independent, The Times and the Fairfax newspapers of Australia. Now based in Budapest, Womack covers the European Union’s relatively new eastern members. Since the refugee crisis of 2015, she has written for the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR. Her interest in human stories, geopolitical realities and trust in the power of quality reporting give her a fascinating perspective on the role of journalism in defending democracy.
