    *NOTE* This video isn't meant to say there's anything wrong with fan theories or that fans for some reason aren't allowed to hold them. This video just seeks to explain why some of the more common fan theories regarding the Godzilla series, some of which are mistakenly held as fact by many fans, are certifiably untrue.

    We've seen in a number of movies that Godzilla has no problem fighting underwater. When Kong and Godzilla tumbled in the water, Kong very wisely left the scene. He put up a great fight, but no way can Kong fight underwater for very long. That's just how I interpreted the ending.

    • @Wikizilla
      @Wikizilla  7 років тому +121

      And that's likely why Tomoyuki Tanaka retroactively declared the fight a draw.

      Wikizilla Was the retcon official?

    • @Wikizilla
      @Wikizilla  7 років тому +47

      It was published in an official book written by Tomoyuki Tanaka, one of Godzilla's creators, so it's definitely official to some extent. Tanaka is very generous regarding Godzilla's combat record in the book, even calling his final battle with Biollante a victory.

    • @ConstantineFurman
      @ConstantineFurman 7 років тому +22

      The problem with that is Godzilla is unconscious at the beginning of the the next movie, having been defeated by Kong. That's why he's washed ashore by a hurricane... he wasn't able to get out of its way.
      So, Tanaka can call it a draw all he wants, but the intentions of the makers at the time and the evidence in the actual film supersedes that.
      Kong defeating Godzilla has nothing to do with "Well Godzilla can blah blah blah underwater." The tall and the short of it is Godzilla is the villain of the piece. Kong is the hero. Bad guys generally don't win in this sort of picture (because they aren't trying to be "edgy" or "cool" or whatever). Kong wins. Godzilla loses.
      Keep in mind that Tanaka also said (and printed in that Heisei Godzilla Perfection book) "Bagan is canon to the Heisei series"...

    Another note to add about Godzilla Jr. being Godzilla 2000 or 2004 is that while Junior was kind and gentle towards the humans, Godzilla 2K and Final Wars weren't and behaved like any other Godzilla. Especially since FW Godzilla was trying to pursue and kill the Gotengo crew.

    I always thought of Godzilla having gills and lungs as being entirely logical. After all, he’s supposed to be amphibious in all of his iterations. This is also why I think the fight in _King Kong vs. Godzilla_ ended in a draw. As soon as both monsters fell into the sea, Godzilla would’ve gained a huge advantage as Kong is only an air breather.

    That tease of G1998 at the end. Looking forward to that.
    Adding on to "Is Junior the 1999 Godzilla?" -- in June 1999, Toho held a press conference for the film. One of the questions asked by a reporter with response:
    Q: Was [Godzilla 2000: Millennium] ever planned as a sequel to 'DESTOROYAH'?
    A: (producer Shogo Tomiyama) I never considered that idea at all for this project. The story of 'GODZILLA VS. DESTOROYAH' is set in a world entirely different from 'GODZILLA 2000: MILLENNIUM'.
    The more you know!

    • @ConstantineFurman
      @ConstantineFurman 7 років тому +1

      Tomiyama is getting by on a technicality. "Godzilla 2000 Millennium" doesn't have Godzilla as Junior from "vs. Destroyer", but "Godzilla Millennium" (the project's first title), which had a different storyline did. Godzilla in "2000" isn't Junior, but that change was made very late in the game, despite what Tomiyama said in that press conference.

    Kensho Yamashita has said that "Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla" takes place in 1994, just a few months after "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla." Also, computer monitors in "Godzilla vs. Mothra" set the main action as happening in December of 1992 (the prologue would likely be right after the events of "King Ghidorah"). Since the movie was released in December of '92, this would've been a conscious act by the filmmakers to place its setting. As well, if "Godzilla '84" takes place in 1984, then "Biollante" would take place in 1989, as the film itself has the super, "Five Years Later."
    Here's the thing about Junior and "Final Wars"-- in the final film, no it's not Junior. But like with "2000", originally it was. The script that Tomiyama and Wataru Mimura wrote had it be Junior. But when Ryuhei Kitamura and his writer came in, they obliterated all references to it being Junior. Tomiyama first hinted at this in an interview with G-Fan magazine in late 2003 or 2004 (I forget offhand). This is why everything's back on the 100 meters scale. Additionally, the opening prologue was a concept that was originally in a draft for one of the 1995 story scripts-- since it didn't get used before, in Tomiyama/Mimura's draft, that was Aso and Hyodo piloting Atragon. But in the final film? No, it's not Junior.

Because according to the movie and a 1984 book, Godzilla was not a mutated dinosaur, but in fact a giant prehistoric marine reptile that slept with a colony of other Godzilla, but an h-bomb killed most of them and irradiated the surviving Godzilla.
    So many people seem to get this wrong. The original Godzilla was a victim of nuclear weapons exactly just like how actual victims were: burned and exposed to high amounts of radiation, not mutated into a monster.

    It's quite disappointing that the King Kong vs Godzilla japanese ending were nothing but tall tales. It was almost a match that Godzilla 2000 could be Junior, but he was the third in the Heisei era only. And I don't want to offend many people who are Godzilla fans, but connecting Junior as FinalGoji was a pile of bullshit. Why because Junior was born in 1993, while Godzilla (GFW) made his appearance and got sealed up around the 60’s; however, ironically, was released during the Xilien invasion in 2004.
    Hey, can you do the Godzilla vs the Devil misconception thing.

      The opening of "Final Wars" cannot take place in the 60s (fans just made that up around the time of release; that was never something Toho said). The main action of the movie takes place in the year 203X (several Toho sources and the Making of site this), so if Gordon was on the Atragon as a young man, it would be impossible for it to be set in the 1960s. The late 90's as originally intended is far more likely.

    • @kaiju-odanny9778

    • @kaiju-odanny9778
      @kaiju-odanny9778 6 років тому

      KeepingAngelaBaker My sources is Wikizilla, where it video shows from 3:23-4:32, which implying very good reasons of why Final Wars has share no connection with the Heisei Godzilla series:
      1. The Heisei series and Final Wars shared no continuity and set in their own universe.
      2. The stock footage is nothing but a montage to have Godzilla's triumph victory ending it.
      3. Not only appeared in 1954, but he was sealed in Antarctica (during the great monster war) until been released in the 21st century during the Xilien invasion.
      4. Junior was born in 1994, which implying that he's actually the third Godzilla in the Heisei timeline only.
      And my other sources is from Toho Kingdom: www.tohokingdom.com/kaiju/godzilla_mill5.htm, where I ask them about the film itself and they did tell me that the film actually taken place in 1964-2004.
      And by chances, if you say that the film taken place in 203X where are your links to support this unless you're some simpleton who make up bombastic claims.
      And to add more, there was an originally planned script implying that Junior will be frozen in Antarctica in the late 90's until he was released in 203X, however, director Ryuhei Kitamura thought about it but rewrite it into his own which leave the timeplot unknown.

    The idea that Gojira was named after a person isn't technically a "rumor." It was published in issue #30 of Famous Monsters of Filmland as a quote from Tsuburaya himself.
    "We checked into the story that it was a combination of the English word 'gorilla' and the Japanese word 'kujira' or whale. Mr. Tsuburaya set us straight:
    "Actually, there was a tough looking fellow working on the Toho lot," he told us, "with the nickname Gojira. We just used his name. It certainly fit well."
    This isn't to say that Tsuburaya might not have been spinning a story, or that the fellow's nickname might not have been a combination of exactly those words, or that FM might not have made the quote up. But it wasn't a vague rumor. It came from a published article that even references exactly the origin you claim is the correct one, and was presented as a direct quote from one of the original creators.

    My guess for future misconceptions to be debunked in a sequel:
    Are the miniatures made from cardboard? (No, they were made by a crafting company that used material such as plastic, foam, and wax. They never use cardboard, since cardboard miniatures can tear, burn, or flatten too easily)
    Is Godzilla evil? (Only GMK Godzilla is definitely evil. Most of the time, Godzilla is a neutral force, and even when he IS the villain, he's usually shown as a tragic and sympathetic anti-villain or simply an unstoppable force of nature in many movies)
    Was Godzilla vs. the Devil ever considered before being scrapped? (No. There were no plans for a movie featuring Godzilla fighting Satan (not to be confused with the IDW comic Godzilla in Hell))
    Did Anguirus/Kamoebas/Gamera and Kumonga/Ebirah appear in Godzilla: King of the Monsters? (No, those are new kaiju: Methuselah and Scylla. However, a kaiju skeleton that "may or may not be Anguirus" can be seen in the underwater ruins)
    Is the new MUTO in Godzilla: King of the Monsters Abaddon? (There is no official statement to prove this. Even the official novel adaptation of the movie simply called the new MUTO "a hunchbacked, six-legged MUTO" (despite actually having eight legs))
    Was the concept art for a cephalopod kaiju for Godzilla: King of the Monsters meant to be Kraken from the novelization? (No proof for this either)
    Is Gamera owned by Toho ever since Daiei filed bankruptcy? (No, he is owned by Kadokawa as of now. And despite appearing in concept art for KotM, Legendary has not yet approached Kadokawa to obtain the rights for Gamera)

    Why did people think Kong won the fight with Godzilla? They both fell into the sea, right? And we see Kong swimming home? Godzilla lives in the damn sea, they both gave up and went home. That sure sounds like a draw to me.

      Toho made the conscious decision to depict Kong as the only monster to emerge at the end. Godzilla was either knocked unconscious or retreated first, while Kong was able to surface before deciding to return home. Toho themselves stated Kong was the winner, their sales pamphlet from the time even directly says "King Kong is victorious."

    There is one legitimate element that does also make Shin come off as a manifestation of separate lifeforms, rather than one big one that you don't directly address, so I wanted to point it out --- When little bits of flesh are blasted off of Shin Godzilla, these globs of flesh will grow teeth and eyes similar to that of the main creature; they literally try to become miniature versions of the creature that they were originally part of. Now mind you, this could just be that, because of its super-mutation, its flesh is somehow able to survive on its own for several minutes, long enough to even attempt a full-scale evolution of its own, but this was the main reason why I originally assumed Shin was a Superorganism rather than just a standard mutated creature akin to the others.

    I don't mind the gills at all, But I do want to say that it is weird that Godzilla has gills to begin with... There was a time period where there were plenty of marine reptiles none of which had evidence of gills. I only bring it up because I always thought Godzilla was like a whale where every now and then you just see him rise to the surface (maybe just his nose poke up) Where he then inhales And dives back down. I guess I'm just weird.

What's strange is that I haven't seen many people complain about the ending of Mothra vs Godzilla, but when Kong wins, it's suddenly the worst thing ever. So two baby caterpillars are allowed to defeat Godzilla, but a giant ape isn't. I swear, this fanbase is so hypocritical. And no, I'm not badmouthing Mothra vs Godzilla. Even though this video doesn't really include stuff about Mothra and King Ghidorah I kinda wanted to drop this bit about the Rebirth of Mothra series and what I wish was true about it and why it doesn't (but should have) link up with the Godzilla Heisei series. Why didn't they just keep the continuity from the Godzilla Heisei series? In Rebirth of Mothra it could have been that Mothra had just returned from space after having saved the Earth from the meteor that Battra was supposed to destroy and then she decided to lay an egg. Then just change things around and say that Desghidorah had been defeated by a previous Mothra and sealed away. After that the movie can almost be exactly the same. (Minus all the kid stuff.) Just a few dialog changes. Then we could use these minor changes to explain stuff about King Ghidorah (from Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah) and "Grand" King Ghidorah/ Grand Ghidorah in Rebirth of Mothra 3. We could say that it was Thought to be Desghidorah that wiped out the dinosaurs but it really was a young Grand Ghidorah. And then with time travel and stuff involved Grand Ghidorah is beaten in the present by Armor Mothra. However; in a twist that could actually make sense, sometime in the future mankind finds traces of Grand Ghidorah cells where he was defeated by Armor Mothra. The scientist don't know what the origin of these cells are and just decide to use them for experiments. They end up making the Dorats that show up in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. And then the evil time travelers that want to ruin Japan figure out they can use the Dorats to make a new monster they can control. Thus a slightly different version of Grand Ghidorah is born. King Ghidorah. See how that works well together? I don't know why they didn't do that. Maybe you could make a video about this. Oh and how the Rebirth of Mothra movies should have been done better in first place. lol

When the film was made, Godzilla was still a villain, and Tomoyuki Tanaka's retcon isn't that much different than having Greedo shoot first in the STAR WARS special edition in 1997 because Han Solo had become such a fan favorite.

    Attempts to smash all Godzilla films into some singular continuity leads to nothing but trouble.
    From its start the Millennium (1999-2004) Series' entries EACH had separate continuities connecting only to the 1954 original (Godzilla x Megaguirus even went out of its way to create a fictional history of post-1954 Japan), but Tokyo SOS confused the issue as a direct sequel to the previous film. Then Final Wars said "hold my beer" and freakin' threw Minya at us. But COME ON, fanboys--GMK Angry Spirits Godzilla, Jet Jaguar Handshake Godzilla and Burning Meltdown Godzilla don't co-exist in a single continuity any more than the 1943 serial Batman, Michael Keaton Batman and Christian Bale Batman do.
    One Toho kaiju classic that DID have two endings, Frankenstein Conquers the World, was originally intended to be a Godzilla film (and was inspired by the never-filmed US film King Kong vs Frankenstein). In a scene shot to satisfy American co-producers, a giant octopus suddenly appears without explanation and drags "Frankenstein" to his doom, but this ending was ultimately rejected and only saw light of day when it was accidentally aired on TV, becoming an instant fan obsession. Did some foggy memory about giant primates fighting octopi lead to a rumor about the wrong film--King Kong vs Godzilla?
    I like the theory--just as unsupported as any other--that "Gojira" is simply a mashup of "gorira" (gorilla) and "kujira" (whale), who were at the time mistakenly considered the most dangerous creatures of land and sea.

    • @Wikizilla
      @Wikizilla  7 років тому +4

      "Gojira" being a combination of _gorira_ and _kujira_ is not a "theory," it's the actual origin of Godzilla's name. Just how that name was conceived and decided upon is unclear, and there are countless rumors about it, the most common being that it was the nickname of someone working for Toho.
