- Kenya’s long time opposition leader Raila Odinga says he is confident of a favourable ruling by the country’s constitutional court regarding a petition seeking to invalidate the declaration of his opponent William Ruto as President elect.
Mr. Odinga says the court’s judgement will have wider implications on democracy across Africa because it will set precedence for future disputes.
He spoke to the BBC’s Richard Kagoe who sought to find out if he was ready to accept the decision by the court.

I live in Germany, so I might not be fully versed on the entire issue as the citizens of Kenya would. My insight is based on my research on African politics, sources which I get from the internet. Uhuru´s botched government cannot and will not guarantee stability and rationality in Kenya. His manner of improvising every morning that he wakes up leaves the country political scarring, loss of credibility of the electoral system and atmosphere of feuding, recrimination and not talking of corruption. The contorted manoeuvring of political parties will lead to the worst outcome seen in the history of Kenyan politics
Urgent matters require government attention. The economic and social conditions of the country as it exits the pandemic necessitate a steady hand.
The question is; can these challenges be met by Raila and his Azimio? The answer is NO; since its the very same Raila and his ODM party that gave such a dismal performance providing essential support to the Uhuru´s government.
First, the pandemic retreat may be in sight, but careful management is still needed. Phasing out of the emergency measures has to be planned and implemented, both in the economic and health sector.
Ruto´s government must commit, to overhaul the public budget, reduce unsustainable debts, reduce taxes, eliminate waste and increase productive investment. All this must coexist with a credible public debt reduction plan.
Third, trial procedures must be overhauled to increase efficiency and speed.
This is a key reform in a country that has by far the longest trial duration in the World. The parliament has authorised the government to act by decree, and Uhuru has failed to safeguard the Constitution and fell short of leadership and integrity.
New regulations must now be introduced linking retirement to life expectancy, with penalties for early retirement to ensure financial sustainability.
If Kenya and by extension Africa doesn't press for clear, fair and verifiable elections, democracy will die a slow death, and states will become captives of ravenous buccaneers. This case is of benefit to Africa.
After seeing the Jan 6 raid, I doubt Africa will cause the death of Democracy.

I am assuming you are either young or a non kenyan so you genuinely dont know. Raila Odinga fought for the right to have multipartism instead of dictatorial leadership, he also fought to have our new constitution that we are enjoying right now, he build a bridge initiative to maintain peace in kenya, he also fought for tax reforms to ensure kenya doesn't have inflation, also he fought super hard for electerol reforms resulting in our new electronic voting format, which is not perfect but he is working to improve it. Now he is in the supreme court continuing the same struggle fighting for his rightful win and at the same time fighting for our electoral system to be massively improved. He is a true living legend and freedom fighter
