Kudos to TCM for including Eleanor Powell in this year's Summer Under The Stars and introducing a whole new audience to this gifted woman. I myself knew very little about her until watching her this summer. AMAZING dancer and a truly beautiful & charming lady. The dog in this clip is just too adorable ❤
As a kid I was in a group tap-dancing in shows. I've always loved it. Drove my mom crazy tap-dancing on the sub-floor in the basement. It's a lost art.
MGM couldn't find a properly trained dog for this sequence, so Eleanor Powell bought Buttons from a prop man and trained him herself. This scene was shot in her own living room because it was where the dog was used to doing all the tricks.
@@juliag.5114 I verified that. The training may be even more impressive than the dance, and the fact that it was done by a dancer rather than by a professional trainer is incredible.
Absolutely adorable! Super dancing from Eleanor--who always makes it look so easy--and her dancing partner Buttons. Eat your heart out Simon Cowell. Now I see where all the dog acts on BGT and AGT got their routines.
Eleanor Powell was magnificent, but the dog was phenomenally trained. The "don't work with kids and don't with animals didn't apply here, it seems." I had a dog 25 years ago who was absolutely brilliant but would only do a trick if he felt like it. Even a treat couldn't convince him...
According to the video description, the studio couldn't find a dog who could do the required tricks so Eleanor Powell got the dog and TRAINED HIM HERSELF. Amazing!
The funny thing was when she started out she didn’t like tapping and isn’t it ironic that she became the best tapper ever! Also a great spinner! Queen of Tap!
Eleanor Powell is absolutely amazing! And Buttons the Dog is so cute! I wonder if Buttons was a beagle? It wouldn't surprise me a bit though because beagles are so smart!
No, that's not a beagle. It appears to be either a Jack Russell or a Parson Russell terrier. It could be a Russell cross with something else, definitely a terrier though.
LOL true, buts its not like they gave a shit about animal treatment in movies back in 1941 😂 she could of been dancing like that and kicking the dog nonstop and no one would care lol
@@SpoobyMUFC-- Eleanor would care. The dog was in the wrong place twice: her pantaloons hit his face during a spin; she almost hit him as he passed behind the couch while she vaulted over it. Accidents do happen and thankfully all was well in the end. That was a pretty impressive leap by Buttons as she caught him.
She was one of the greatest tap dancers of all time; a better tap dancer than Ginger Rogers. It's too bad her movie career was so short. Still can't get over the dog.
The Nicholas Bros. we’re asked who was the best dancer, Kelly or Astaire. They said. Northern. Eleanor Powell was the best! They said that. And they meant it.
Dancing with your dog should be in the Olympics. These two could have won the gold medal.
Feats of precision, athleticism, and coordination like this are seldomly seen in movies today. Young audiences would have their minds blown.
Movies today get 3-second cuts. This artistry doesn't exist anymore, sadly.
Yep...its blown lol
She was an amazing dancer, the dog was pretty awesome as well.❤
Eleanor was one of the best dancers EVER! P.S. I love her outfit
Eleanor was a wonderful and a fearless dancer. Very underrated star for sure. Fred Astaire loved dancing with her. Absolutely love Buttons as well.
Fred didn't dance with her.
@@IrisFlorentinaA Yes he did.
I guess she intimidated him because he knew shw was his equal@josephcooper4757
@@IrisFlorentinaAFred did dance with her, but was, shall we say, even bordering on being intimidated by her.
@@susanst.82 Exactly RIGHT! I adore Fred but he was surely intimidated by the female version of himself, a PERFECTIONIST.
Unbelievable athletic ability and beauty too. What a find and talent MGM had. This number with Buttons is incredible.❤🎉

Great number!!! Only Eleanor could do stuff like that!!!
She’s an absolutely amazing tapper!
Wow, what a performance. By both of them. Going to have to watch this movie on TCM. Looks to be fun.
She was always an iconic Queen!
The best female dancer ever
I'd put her maybe in my top three, but I need to see more of her dancing in movies to make a bolder claim.😊
@@Sci-Fi-Mikecheck her out on TCM on 8/8/24 - Eleanor Powell Day, close to 24 hours of her movies! 😊
@@Sci-Fi-Mike Watch her and Fred Astaire in Begin the Beguine. You'll be forever in awe of amazing Eleanor.
Wow! Never saw this one before! What a fun routine.
🤩🤩🤩
Great dance! Thanks very much 🥰
It was absolutely amazing! I think the dog should also garner a tile on the Walk of Fame.

Th whole thing is very impressive but her spins are phenonmenal

I hope she kept him!
I love this clip. I don't know who trained the dog (it's a Parson Jack Russell Terrier) but they did a magnificent job.
Eleanor trained the dog herself!

She did!
Fantastic choreography.
Genuine talent. Powell pretty good too!
I love EP. I once read that she intimidated some male dancers because of her amazing skills.
Todo es extraordinario, excepcional, el perrito adorable, ella zapateaba como nadie.
I would rather watch that 100 times than 1 minute of a modern Hollywood "film" today!
Agreed!! Back then you had so much to offer in the way of talent. Today, absolutely nothing as long as you learn your lines.
Absolutely adorable! Super dancing from Eleanor--who always makes it look so easy--and her dancing partner Buttons. Eat your heart out Simon Cowell. Now I see where all the dog acts on BGT and AGT got their routines.
3:31 buttons yawning mid routine 😂
Both fantastic ❤
Now that's freestyle healwork to music!

Looks like a Jack Russell which can be temperamental 😂

Lovely and incredibly talented.
Excellent
Fabulous!!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Queen of Tap!
⭐️⭐️GENIUS⭐️⭐️

And they say Fred Astair was a genius with props!
Buttons was a very good boi.
Me watching this in 2024 while my little beagle lays asleep on the floor.

bravo Buttons the Dog!
❤ wonderful
The clothes she was wearing are the same as girls wear today, the trousers gathered into the ankles also brilliant dancing by both of them
Maybe the best female dancer of all times. Fred Astaire admired her and loved the appearences with Eleanor.Buttons was amazing too!
She almost banged into the dog at 3:26.
Close, but it worked!

@SpoobyMUFC I can only imagine the number of takes. I think 🤔 the couple of times she came close to the pup only make the number more realistic.
Fabulous female Olympic material love the outfit very feminine! You go girl

Can we be honest and acknowledge this all about the dog and handler?
Her dog she was the trainer!!!
And to think she took up tapdancing as a secondary dance skill.
Lol when they say "ADHD wasn't a thing in my day" I'll just point at this and stare at them until they apologize.
So glad tcm on UA-cam; I just had to get away from “X”
Like Ashleigh and Pudsey
I thought this was going to be the singer.
Fred Astaire said she danced like a man
But who asked for those harem pants?
