The Land Rover Series III Is Equipped For Adventure

- This story comes in partnership with Belstaff as we hit the dunes in a Land Rover Series III.
As a car photographer who shoots for many of the big auction houses, Mr. Pawel Litwinski is no stranger to the world of vintage Bugattis, Ferraris, and Porsches-cars defined by their elegant lines and frightening top speeds. On any given day, Pav can be found shooting anything from a 1932 Daimler Double-Six in one corner of the United States to a Jaguar D-Type on the opposite side of the continent. If he’s at home in California, however, odds are you’ll find Pav in the seat of a ride defined by its simplicity: his 1973 Land Rover Series III.
Growing up in Coney Island, New York, Pav saw plenty of sports cars on the city streets but what he really wanted was a vehicle that would go over everything. Oh, and he had one other demand: it had to have a tire on the hood. After a couple decades of waiting and dreaming, Pav now has his Land Rover and the two are inseparable, so much so that even when he found himself in financial straits a few years ago-during which time he even had to sell his primary camera and his Subaru STi-Pav refused to part with his beloved Land Rover.
Nowadays, if Pav isn’t throwing a ladder into the back of the Land Rover and grabbing his gear while rushing to a photo shoot, he’s bouncing over the dunes at Pismo Beach on the Central California coast. But wherever he goes, be assured that on his face is the biggest smile you’ve ever seen.

Totally built for adventure! Nothing quite like driving a series. An experience that brings a smile to your face every time.
If your car doesn’t make you smile, it’s just an appliance.
Everytime I need some some inspiration or to bring my mood up, I just watch this video again. I love LR Series but seen Pawel been so humbly happy talking about his truck and showing his gratitude for it, really makes me happy.
"How's the roll-over protection?"
"excellent, just don't roll it over. You'll be fine"
[chuckle] They are a bit harder to tip over than you think. I can remember being in one with my grand dad when I was about 4 or 5, and I was TERRIFIED, because I was sure it was about to tip over, but the old man knew what he was doing... I seem to remember a warning that it was pretty much guaranteed to drive along a 40 degree slope, but not a 45. You could tip them over, but then a lot of passenger sedans of the 60s you could tip over at least that easily as well... You go find an original late 50s or early 60s VW and see how hard that is to tip over. I'll give you a hint, it's not all that hard....
Eggly Bagelface you can buy roll bars for them. He must like the danger lol.
They look pretty good with roll bars and sports seats. But if you've got a near original 73 series III, dont mess with it. Too many of them have been butchered. I've got an '04 90 I've had for 12 years. Looks pretty damned near the same apart from the front grill recess. I'll never sell it.
If you think you could roll over your are in Moab or you need to learn to drive!
Eggly Bagelface roll over is for wimps that don’t know how to drive off road.
"I've always wanted to have an old truck with a tire on the hood."
I like this guy!
Land Rovers have Soul. This bloke gets it.
Helen O'Halloran he totally does
Wow! A topless NADA Series 3 Land Rover 88". The holy grail of Land Rovers. Brilliant.
How to see that it is a NADA??
winkel1979 What??!!
winkel1979 Probably meant NAS Series 3 (North American Series).
Joseph Divar Land Rover themselves denoted these Series 3 Land Rovers for the American and Canadian markets as NADA Land Rovers, NADA standing for North America Dollar Area. As for the Defender which arrived on the American market in 1994, these vehicles where designated NAS 90's and 110's by Land Rover. The NAS meaning North American Specification.
I hope that helps?
Lawrence5987 Thanks, for some reason I only remember them using NAS. Been quite a long time since I've dusted off my Rover material. I printed out ECRs guide Series Rovers 15-years ago and took it to Kinko's to have it bound. I'm sure it's in there, what's it stand for again?
Dang dude, you got it made. A dream job and a dream truck to go along with it.
I'd look at the truck like "you're not going"; and it stayed.
*music breaks into silence*
*looks back at truck during filming* "it's not going anywhere!"
I am so happy there is finally a new petrolicious video! ....Welcome back!
I was thinking of bying a 3series, it is this film that made me get one. A series from ‘81 and i use it every day for the last year. Thank you for this video
I too have a 73 Series III 88 and you captured every single feeling I have for my beloved "Warthog". It is a living member of my family and I can't ever image it not being with us. Thank you so very much for sharing your story.
This is what a Land Rover suppose to be. Land Rover shouldn't be those with classy leather heated seats and fancy air conditioners and center console for the rich millionaire old ladies's iPhone, lottery winners or Russian mobs. Land Rover suppose to be roving the land!
+mcg18993 have you been in a 2015 defender? trust me the word "millionaire" doesn't spring to mind! I have a brand new defender and a 83 series thee just like in this video, the similarities are incredible.
mcg18993 EXACTLY!!!
This is the 1st car we owned. I really wanna own it one day forever. I'm proud of u man, don't let it rust.
Much respect here, a real motor car. No nonsence. Pure connection he has with this machine, like i with my aircooled collection. The early rovers are welcome into my german aircooled collection. Those who have one for sale, please have a go with contacting me. Well done.
You sir have excellent taste in vehicles . And great video thank you.
I love the world for people like that. Just off in his own world enjoying life like nobody else. Its beautiful man.
Such a great video, I've watched 5 times already. Really poetic and shows you exactly what a Land Rover was built for, to be used and loved.
Hahahahaha Henry this is my third time watching. I drive a 109 Series 3. Cheers
Apparently it's a truck not a landrover Series III
Love Pawel's enthusiasm for his Land Rover, I have a 109 and they do get under your skin. I noticed that he pushed the yellow knob down when he engaged low box with the red lever. Does he know that there is no need to push the yellow knob down for low box? Engaging low box automatically engages 4WD. The yellow knob is for engaging 4WD in high box only.
Thanks for the video, I've watched it more than once, it always cheers me up.
Ha was about to comment on that but you beat me to it 4 years ago! :-)
@@adriantyler6911 i was about to comment the same thing :D
Land Rover series attract so much love from romantic adventure seeking people and it's not hard to see why, it's a legendary iconic vehicle that evokes adventure just by looking at it.
This is the best one I have watched, so beautiful in every way!
One of the coolest 4 x 4s ever...
Fj40 is one of them too!
+Yung Pauly I'm looking to buy one. My heart says rover, my brain says cruiser.
+Chris S Go Cruiser my buddy! Get an HJ if you can with a 2H engine they are one of the greatest engines ever built.
+DodoCnR I already have a 100 series cruiser. 33inch tires, 2 inch lift, running petrol and LPG. Does great on the LPG. I'm just itching for something I can take the top off. The FJ or BJ diesel here in Aus is an option, but IMHO, just not as cool as the series 2 or 3 swb. much easier to get a toyota though, so I might just go that way.
+Chris S bronco though
Beautiful story about an awesome piece of classic, british engineering. Sometimes you just develop a bond with a car/truck/whatever.
Its nice to see people really enjoying their vehicles. To many people care for their cars like they do their washing machines.
This Guy's passion for his Landy! Sold his SLR instead when times were lean. By doing that, he kept his smile.
“I really love this truck”. True love in 5 words.
This is a beautifully restored Land Rover
Great movie. This owner has "I love this car" written all over his face. Wishing them lots of safe and happy miles together!
I like the people who say "scenester or hipster" because they are the ones who have no idea what liking something different or unique is about. One thing the Landie has over a similiar year 4x4 is the body panels are an aluminum alloy. No ugly diamond plate plastered over this 4x4.
... Um, you're joking about the rust part right?
XavierJ61 no it doesn't rust
***** I restored a series 3 two years ago, I guarantee you that they rust. A lot.
That's pretty funny, anyone who has ever owned an English car ever knows that their car is at least 50% rust :)
only the chassis or other aluminium parts were steal is in contact with, because of lack of maintenance, you did a poor choice on the car to restore then :S
I have a 1977 Series 3 as well and have driven it across Australia twice now, fantastic car.
Fantastic vehicle, used by someone who knows what a Land Rover is meant for!
I had the exactly the same Land Rover but as a cab, when he said it will go over anything he means anything! I used to run around fields and 4x4 quarry days. These last few years i've been missing her. Always love this video!
Why did I ever sell my Series III? I love this little movie and the personal narrative with it. It is shot cinematically and well, all credit to the team behind it. Splashing through a storm drain in a Series III under California sunshine looks pretty good to me.
I like those old Landys, reminds me of the 1961 International Scout my dad used to have.
I couldn't agree more! Driving 'in the wind' like you do 'top less' haha, is GREAT. It feels like riding a motorbike, then pulling through the sand and water is a kick. Have fun!
I understand the feeling completely, there is nothing like cruising the Coast, on and off the dunes! I'm in a 1990 Trooper, and I have had the time of my Life out there.
Those old classic 4x4s are the best aesthetically. Simple for maintenance and fun.
A beautiful love-poem to the Series III. Lovely.
What a lovely guy...I how much fun would it be to spend the day with him and his stunning Landy driving over those dunes. Pure Freedom! So Pawel...thank you...and I SO understand why you grin from ear-to-ear when talking about your car. A series 3 is my next project for sure.
I've watched this video countless times - I've never seen someone sum up the ownership experience of an old Land Rover so well. I grin like a loon driving my sIII too. You just can't help it.
the way you look at it has won my heart, I wish I get a Willys cj3b & build it from scratch & add those personal touches to call it me, my jeep and become in separable, I will leave it to my son so he can rejoice the memories of him in this & the childhood with his kids.
I know that smile. I had it when I was 17-years old and test drove my first Series Rover. Only an enthusiast knows that smile on a fellow enthusiast. Not many people understand it's not about the latest electronically-controlled-this-or-that, or whether something has three different traction control modes for just wet. I most recently had the same grin on my face after trading in my technologically superior Japanese sportbike for a '97 Ducati. It's brutal ergonomics, gutturally primal cacophony of mechanicals had me, and still have me grinning ear to ear every day I ride.
Life has gotten in the way of currently owning my own Series Rover, but after seeing Litwinski's infections smile I may have to re examine my list! Great video.
Beautiful!the relationship a man has with his ride is something serious!
Man Pawel (Pav) has come a long ways since his Road Rules days, I am so proud of him !!! :) Still doing what he loves , photography :) If he looks famaliar to you , he was on MTV's Road Rules 8 Semester at Sea.
I have a 1982 series 3 pick up. It was the first car I ever owned and it still has pride of place on my driveway. Its off the road at the moment as it needs a few jobs doing to it and I'm away with work a lot. I can't wait to get a better job where I'm home more and the first thing I'm going to do when I get home is put my Landy back on the road.
A fantastic film, thank you for making, I really enjoyed it.
I love how I can tell how much he loves it.
This is my favorite video yet. Beautiful S3. I have owned 7 land rovers including, a 1957 S1 swb. I never should have sold it. It was the only one i ever saw with a chrome grill. I feel the same way about the adventure. That is what a land rover is for. Thanks, keep on driving.
I totally agree - I love my Series III Landy!
Hi from the other side of the pond (Landrovers home). Brilliant video has now inspired to get my 1983 model back on the road, just wish we had your weather and places to roam.
This guy looks so happy! I hope that stays for as long as it can.
Well done! We are proud of our Land Rovers here in England. They are for using! If they break parts are cheap. Keep it going Man!
I just got given a Belstaff Jacket. Instantly it reminded me of this video. Now I have to have this truck.
Wonderful to see the connection this guy has with his Land Rover..... They do that to you I've been told :-)
No one take this the wrong way, I LOVE drovers, but ive never heard someone say "Its never broken down" before
*****
Rebuilding one of these girls then fitting a 200TDi or something is NOT a restoration. Should of bought a Defender if you can't stand the heat...
As an owner of a Series 3 I actually laughed at that. He must have bought that one Landy the rest of us thought was a myth. I bet this guy could win the lottery and have a pet unicorn too! Loved the video though, his enthusiasm and apparent joy at driving the car, as well as finding new practical uses for it as a photographer's assistant, brightened my day.
***** I have a 96 110 and it has never ever let me down. Always started, gone anywhere I wanted and brought me home without a worry in the world - I could be lucky - but it is slow, noisy and leaks like a sieve.
***** series 3 are really tuff fucks, this age of motors was a good time 70's-80's for europe (merc w123 D, peugeot 504 2.3D, Renault 4L, this shits were bullet proof. Slow as a turtle but they just don't break.
3AM Channel
I know man I have one, Series IIIs break down all the time haha but always get you there
What a love story.
Just a guy that loves his truck. It's brilliant.
Awesome video as always, also Mr. Pawel Litwinski automotive photography is epic!
I have one same as yours an 88" in blue...owned it from new 40 years now...still love it after all those years...never part with it...its part of the family,
Love the sand dune area in your film...with we had something like that in the UK...could have a lot of fun...we do have dunes but they are all restricted access,
Looks like your love your as much as I love mine.
Nick in the UK.
My first vehicle was a 1960 Land Rover that I bought in 1974. Brings back memories 👍
Enjoy
I love that car! I hope you can keep it forever! oh my god I feel your joy! I want one! So bad!
5:25 brought back memories, I rode atvs at pismo. One side of the dune is rounded and the other is a straight drop. I need to go back there so time.
Really special rig
I love this Defender
Yet another fantastic video.
Love it,Clean and Original...
so so so nice landrover, just love that 4x4 and that color is one of the best!
Fantastic video for a fantastic car. Thumbs up . Enjoy it man .
Pure enthusiasm, love it! :)
They do go anywhere. Can't beat a landy. Cool video.
Beautiful Landi. Beautiful video. Beautiful commentary. Thanks for the share.🍻💯
something totally different for a change. I like it!
Beautiful!
Absolutely Amazing!
I just spent two weeks in L.A.
There are a serious lack of vintage vehicles on the freeways & on the streets.
I guess L.A. people don't want to die.
Great video . Nice explanations, wonderful photography.
Bro! Today I bought a military series 3 LWB 109. She'll be delivered in a few days :)) Great vid, love your passion. Land Rovers hoooooooooo!
finally an old landy ..love it
All the right reasons for owning such an awesome thing like that. I'm happy for ya man!
I felt much the same about my 1986 Toyota 4wd truck. It was stock except for a wood bed and 33'' tires. Compared to modern trucks it was slow, but I never felt it was a dog. It had no trouble doing 75mph on the highway and was even pretty smooth considering the big tires and 4 shocks that needed replacing. It had over 200k miles, needed a ton of work to be road legal and yet ran every day without fail! The 22r is a great engine and that chassis was so simple that it worked no matter what you did with it.
Wow thanks for sharing your awesome truck!
Cheers!
Do you know what the whole point of this UA-cam channel and what they do? Look at there videos they take cars you may know nothing about or probably didnt even know they exist. They tell you the unique story's of there owners and how they fell in love with the car and why they bought the car, Its a little trip into the life of owning this car and to me here how this story goes, He loves photography and wanted a simple rush, The rush of knowing that this thing is a simple piece of machinery that deserves respect because it can so easily kill you on these dunes and all this leads me to my point
Why cant you people just accept these cars? Every video is a different car and a new story so why do people have to hate so much just because it doesn't have a V12 twin turbo 700Hp crazy engine and have body lines like a Ferrari. You people need to learn to accept other people and there choices and just listen to there story's and not insult them. And if you need the motivation im an Aussie with a V8 Muscle car and we are considering the most bias singled sided car owners out there
Hear, hear! That's why I consider myself or Jay Leno to be 'car guys'. My collection would be just like his: every age and, more important, every nationality. Tim Allen is an American muscle car guy; Jerry Seinfeld is a Porsche guy. A real car guy loves any car for what it is, does not talk trash about what some other car isn't, and doesn't treat foreign cars and their owners as some sort of traitorous scum (and actually actively collects cars from all over the world). Having said that, my American room in my 'garage' would likely not have any muscle cars in it, as I've seen enough of them for a lifetime, and I simply like the idea of having something 'different'. It would be heavily into 50's/60's B-O-P, Rambler, Studebaker etc. and wagons. Just for the record Josh, I would have you find me a Torana A9X hatch and a Falcon 351 GT.
You guys need to get your hands on a Studebaker Avanti, it would suit the channel well.
Studebaker anything would be awesome!
Turismo hawk
There's a local guy that has one. UGLY AS FUCK.
I remember this guy on the Road Rules way back in the 2000s.
Mans best creation....
Prettiest car I've seen in my life bro
I love this!!!
Not entirely sure why he pushes
Down 4wd when going into low. 4wd is permanent in low and the yellow lever should spring
Up when the red is pulled back
Yeah, fail on his part. Great S3 otherwise and he is a fan - also he called it a hood, which no self respecting LR owner should ever do.
Lol I was wondering the same, probably doesn't put it in 4wd too often.
+Landie Man Yes he needs to more of a anarack like us
Correct.
My 1967 series 2a is still going. One day I would love to give her a full restoration.....just haven't got the heart.
Nice Land Rover. Don't ever sell it! We don't get too many days to drive around with the roof off like that here in the UK, but when we do, it's great. 50 mph is about as fast as I want to go with the roof off and the windscreen folded flat. We have an old Series 3 ragtop FFR 109.
Very cool nice to see someone enjoy what they have can't wait to try Pismo in my Jeep
73 owner checking in. Awesome video!
Nice ride. I've got a 64 series 2a. Not as pretty as yours but love touring around in it. Great video nice to see people who can appreciate old treasures
We bought a 1980 3. Most impractical vehicle! But, we love it! It is so fun!
Found one on craigslist, driving with my friend to get it, needs some TLC to get started, series 3 rover, very nice condition, I am super super excited! Will happen this weekend, will be parked on the street but I am going for it.
Well done once again Petrolicious!
Very gooooood
Something wonderful when you witness a person and his car being so well meshed.
Not to mention how much I love Landies, though my eyes prefer the long-wheelbase pickup cut. I once stared at an eBay sale of an ex-Canadian forest service vehicle in need of major TLC... and had to convince myself that I wouldn't have the time to get it running to my expectations.
Well done Team Petrolicious! Good to see you back.
Loved you story. I have been debating getting one of these. After hearing your story it sounds like I am sold!
Magnifique !!!! Congratulations for this vehicle !! Excellent !!!
a landrover that never breaks down? you are very lucky
