- Check out this retro ride from 1993! I picked up this Trek 9200 up from a yard sale and put about $125 in parts into it to make rideable again. Special thanks to my channel partners @Bikeflights and @marquecycling who’s continued support make restoration videos like this possible. You are an inspiration, Rusty. Thanks to you I’m working on two restorations. The first is a mid 80s Ross that is destined for a local charity. The second is a mid 90s Specialized Hardrock with gravel in it’s future. Really enjoy your channel!
Ahh thanks Mike!! That made my day. I’d love to see the paint scheme on the Ross bike. I haven’t seen one in ages.
I like how it's preserved instead of resto modded.
It is fun to see and ride them as they were.
Sometimes I miss Bar ends but only for climbing. I do wonder how many cyclists sprained or broke their wrists using them 🤪
Sitting in my shop on lunch staring at a donated Trek 9000.... Ty for the inspiration!
Awesome! Thanks for watching and get to it 😎
Bikes from the 90's have a certain je ne sais quoi to them for lack of better vernacular, companies were innovating & trying to make the best product rather than the highest profit, I have 2 special bikes from the era that are so chill, nice restoration Trek's always have some interesting bikes in their lineup, looking forward to the follow up
Thanks Wassim, This is going to be a lot of fun. I'm hoping to get the suspension and geometry working better and upgrade a few components.
I got the same 9200. I did "upgrade" it with manitu shocks, hydraulic magura rear brakes and a pair of spin 3 spoke carbon fiber rims. I love the ride and look of these old bikes.
That is awesome!
thank you my friend 👍🏾
Thanks for watching Rory!
Fantastic, no modern bikes breaths as much charm as old 90s retro bikes. :)
I love how you not only salvage, but also how you rebuild in order to preserve and enhance. Always a joy to watch your videos, Rusty.
Thank you Daniel
I just aired up the tires on my 9200 and still works perfectly. I doubt I have a 1000 miles on it.
I need to find someone in my town who can clean and fix it up properly - like in this video.
Awesome trek. Love the old bikes I put a stepped bottom yoked fork on mine to increase the wheelbase and a70mm stem 660 bars and 8t rode like a dream on the standard old air shock
Well done rusty 👏
Thanks Nick, I found a 80mm stem and a 720mm bar that I will be putting on. Looking forward to it!
Very cool ...... you always do nice work 👏
Thanks Milton!
Very cool
Thanks for watching!
I'm looking forward to the mods on this bike. Back in the day I worked in a sporting goods store that sold those bikes!
Thanks Mark I just reached out to Risse racing, and they are sending me a new O-ring kit for the rear shock, Pretty remarkable that company still sells o- ring kits for a shock that old!
i appreciated bro.. detailed video.. more restorations video to come
Thanks for watching!
I had a 1993 GT RTS 2 with that exact groupset, I upgraded the front fork to a RS Mag 21 and the brakes to a set of Paul Components Cross-stops (I actually still have them). I test rode one of those Treks and it was pretty "bouncy" like a pogo stick.
I was surprised that the rear end did as well as they did. But I can definitely see It getting a lot of bob if the rear shock was not dialed in.
@@CoolBikeProjects Remember that the first rendition had a rubber shock, then they we t with the air afterwards. Probably with a modern shock that has compression and rebound it would ride better
@@johnnydoe66 That's right I saw one with the rubber rear shock. Yikes! I also wonder how much side to side play they would develop as there is no chain stay/ four bar linkage.
From what I remember reading in some of the mtn bike publications was how "noodlely" they felt and how the wheel could twist side to side. If you look at an old Foes single pivot design, he built them as a box section to stiffen the swing arm up
It really was a pity that you gave up on the bottom bracket. The non-drive side is usually easy to get out. Take the bb socket and use a bolt through the top of the socket to screw the socket into bb using the crank arm thread. This pushes the socket in tight, after which you can use a spanner to undo the bb with no risk of the socket coming out of the bb. Same for the drive side. If either are stuck a breaker bar will help. You can tighten that socket in hard and it will not come loose as you try to remove the bb. Works every time for me no matter how stuck or deformed the bb is.
Hi John, I do have the tool for securing the BB socket in place and I did try it, but two of the teeth notches were folded over from someone taking a large screw driver to the drive side. I couldn’t get the socket tool to bite into it enough to hold. Ill be doing some more work to the bike next week and Ill have to see if I can make any more progress on it. Thanks for commenting!
@@CoolBikeProjects Did you try heating the BB cup and then trying to remove it? I've worked on bikes with that same issue, and was fortunate enough that the heat expands the metal enough so that it didn't take a lot of force to remove.BTW: I remember the 9200 I started working in shops in '92, that was a great era for bikes!
That was indeed a cool bike project 😁 I remember when those came out wanting one, only ever saw one in person, really cool bike from the time. I have most of my 2000 Trek 6000 that my wife got me as a birthday gift that year (well, I still have the frame and wheelset 🤪), after I get a few builds under my belt I'm looking forward to hunting parts and rebuilding it 😊✌️
Sounds awesome!
Dang these were Big Money back in the day! I had forgotten that (primitive) full suspension was already available in the early 90's.
Cool ass video, thanks for posting!
Thanks for watching!
Great video I just picked up a 9000 but not sure if I want yo rebuild of pass it off to someone with more time and less projects.... time will tell
Thanks for the inspiring video and your very nice way of narrating/hosting! Got me the same 9200..it's beautiful! Do you still have your purple bar ends because on mine they were missing and I can"t find that specific color matching the decals anywhere on the web..
Sorry, I don’t have them anymore
Can you do a fat bike build?
Great video as always. Is there no way to get the bottom bracket out, and install a new one??
Hi Kevin, thanks for reaching out. I have a couple bottom record tools with a retention bolt the holder than place however two of the teeth inside of the bottom record cups have been bent and folded over which makes it very hard for the tool to sit inside of it. I may try something else when I strip the bike down for the mods, luckily the sealed cartridge bearings are still holding well.
😊😊😊😊😍😍😍😍
Muy bien ...pero en mi país esto nos es restauración, es limpieza y mantenimiento básico
ma a cosa serve smontarla per poi rimontarla senza fare niente?
