There is something so graceful in those flick of the wrist backhand passes from Musetti. A pleasure to watch. And his variety of shots really outclassed Shelton, who had difficulty adapting quickly enough. Alcaraz looks mightily impressive, and so does Dimitrov.
I was watching that match in person at the stadium and so many people kept on screaming out ''Lets go ben'' after almost every shot and were overall disrespectful
Musetti played really clever tennis... he brought out this kind of inconsistent and hesitant play in part from shelton because he was constantly changing the look on the ball, moving him around and not giving him rhythm. He was stealing shelton's timing on the ball and making him doubt his shots, because he'd overhit and then later be a little too safe and get passed. Yeah shelton didn't have the best day but a lot of that was credit to musetti for getting in his head. Excellent match, glad to see him playing well again!
Shelton needs a new coach or at least someone who can work with him for his mental side. Shouts like a maniac at every point and looks pissed off or angry almost all the time. He needs someone to teach him to relax and channel his youthful exuberance to making his game better. Acting cocky can get real old real quick and it already has.
@@JiraiyaSama86Yes. He likes to camp far behind the baseline. He is great at the net, he is creative and has perfect touch, but there are matches where he just can’t find the right transition shots to actually get to the net. He absolutely shouldn’t be a defensive player with his skills but very often he is. Loved his passing shots against Shelton but he should be looking to dictate the points more often.
@@patrikmarflak6559not sure how true it is but I’ve read that his forehand has a long loop which is one of the reasons he stays back because he’s rushed on fast surfaces. Also why he’s good on clay which is a slow surface. But in general I guess he’s grown up on clay and he needs to adapt his game to hard more, which means to play a more aggressive game closer to baseline. He showed that he can.
@@gabrielametodieva8360 Yeah, makes sense. He is obviously most comfortable on clay, but I hope he will change his fh swing path so he can be more effective on other surfaces. I love his highlights but watching his matches can be pretty frustrating because of his court position. It only makes sense on clay.
Hurkacz too careful with his shots. Must have lost a bit of confidence in his accuracy. Wish Korda would manage his stress level and not panic when the score is so close. He has all the shots he needs to win.
Hurcacz can´t be 100% confident with his forehand if he has such a complex a$$ technique to be honest... must need perfect timing otherwise you get the feeling the ball will be miles out. the rest of his game is A level and i love every single bit of it
When Musetti has confidence and plays more inside the court is a pleasure to watch and a bad customer for everyone. I hope he could keep playing like that
Shelton needs to get a coach that will help him on the mental side of tennis. He seems to get lost when players change up the rhythm. Also how you break serves and then lose both set. I think he wants to play too much on his serve. Be like Jon isner. Huge first serve ace. Always forcing a tiebreaker. He should average 14-18 aces. Pete averaged 11. Roger averaged 9. Isner averaged 18.6. Having 4 aces and 5 DF is unacceptable
Ben Shelton needs to learn point construction. In fact most American tennis players need to learn it. It's one of the fundamental reasons we've had such a long drought without a grand slam. The grip-it-and-rip-it strategy from the Nick Bollettieri Academy doesn't work anymore and here is why. Before Gustavo Kuerten revolutionized the game when he employed polyester string on his way to winning Roland Garros in 1997 as an unknown, this strategy worked. But this new string completely aided players who employed top spin and introduced safety in general to players taking a bigger swing at the ball. Couple that with racket technology only continuing to build on the qualities of the string and we have a big problem. It's no surprise that if you look at the last 20 years, from 2004-2024, every multiple grand slam champion on the men's side has grown up on clay outside of Stan Wawrinka, and only because I can see no definitive answers on how much of his game was developed on clay as opposed to hard courts. Regardless, Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray and Carlos Alcaraz all grew up developing their games on clay. Clay is my favorite surface and the reason why all of these legends have been so successful (among the many reasons) is that clay forces you to be able to do four things in particular: 1. Point construction: You have to be able to construct points on a surface prone to long rallies. How to construct points and expose the weaknesses of your opponent. 2. Shot tolerance: Again, long rallies forces you to be able to rally, often hitting 10-15+ shot rallies more often than not. If you can do that, your opponent is likely to create an unforced error, and even outside of that, this forces mental strength and fortitude. It takes a lot of mental strength to rally like this an not hurt yourself through mistakes. 3. Endurance: This of course ties in with shot tolerance but being able to continuously win long rallies requires some serious endurance and suffering. 4. Defense: If your going to win on clay, you had better be able to play defense in some decent capacity. The clay court game translates to hard courts exceptionally well and to grass it helps but it's not as big a deal given the extreme disparity between the surfaces. But on hard courts the same qualities still help significantly. This is a long-winded way of saying that the USTA either needs to build a training facility comprised of red (not green!) clay courts or send all WTA and ATP kids and have them train in Europe for their first 3-5 years before switching to hard court, with periodic refreshing back on clay too. This would force them to develop their games on a surface for the style of play of today.
..that is, let me understand, at the Miami Open in the quarter-finals there is no longer any American tennis player?! Have they all been eliminated already? 🤦♂🤦♂
I noticed Shelton grimace after the net shake too, but I think Musetti was appropriately courteous, not a love fest but completely appropriate and not cold in the least.
