After watching this, I have even more respect for David Hobbs. I always hear about his racing history while watching Formula 1 in the US but actually seeing him driving and hearing the hilarious comments he has in this video is just amazing. He raced back when every time you got into the driver's seat could be your last. I'm not saying modern f1 doesn't have the same risks but these guys back in the raw, early, days of racing, had to have the balls to push these cars to the limit. Eventhough overstepping the limit could mean death. These racers that risked the most, will always be my heroes.
They don't think about the risks when they're racing. I grew up with a fellow who wanted to race, and though he never made it to the big leagues, he raced midgets until the day he died, at age 43. He had a heart attack while racing. He went out the way he wanted to; At the wheel. Luckily, no one else was hurt.
I agree I went to Ontario 3 times as a kid my first race at Riverside was Jan 1980 after that I was bitten NASCAR twice a year 6 hour endurance race can am super v formula Atlantic Indy cars ....i met Bell..Holbert..Jim Trueman..Mario..R.Petty ...D. Sullivan Bobby Alison ..Mears..Big Al lil Al ..Johncock..Sneva..Waltrip Just to name a few.....plenty of history before I showed up U.S. Grand Prix 1960 Jimmy Clark raced a stock car in 67or 68 also drag racing

I'm go to the Hiatorics at Laguna Seca. I first saw saw the Can-Am at Laguna in 70, 71, and 72. Witnessed the dominant Chevy McClarens be defeated by Donohue/Penske Porsche turboPanzer. Most awesome racing I've ever seen.
Carroll Smith, one of the lead engineers of Ford's GT40 effort in the 60s, said of Hobbs that he was remarkably careful and sympathetic to the machine in a time when very few drivers were - as well as, a consumate gentleman.
Had to have balls to drive these cars back then. Basically a death trap in a very serious accident. Loved hearing David Hobbs on NASCAR and F1 broadcasts for many years. Sure do miss him and the crew on Speed Channel.

Does this bring back memories. Loved Riverside. Was there in 71...one of the first races I attended, I was 14. March AFB used to send a B-52 for a low pass during the pre-start ceremonies. Been a Hobbs fan ever since. In 73 he drove a Carling Black Label sponsored M20...one of the prettiest cars I've ever seen. Sam Winston...he was all over TV in those days and well into the 70s. He was killed in a car accident in 95.

This race was one week after Jo Siffert died in an accident at Brands Hatch in an non-championship F-1 race, thus ending the Porsche factory Can-Am effort and prompted them to turn it over to Penske

Drivers and fans would be feeling the tragic loss of popular Swiss driver Jo Siffert, who had been contesting the '71 Can-Am series in the #20 STP Porsche 917 spyder. Two weeks before Riverside, Siffert scored a fine 5th place in the day-glo red 917 at Laguna Seca, but he was killed a week later in a burning BRM F-1 car during a non-championship race at Brands Hatch in England.
I know....I was at both the Monterey and Riverside Can-Am that year. Two weeks apart and like you said, Seppi was killed the weekend in between. I saw him finish his last race. It was sad going to the Riverside race after learning what happened. I became a fan of his reading Road&Track articles by Rob Walker in the '60s.

I believe Bob Skinner is shown at 12:05. He and Tom Jobe usually worked on the same projects and teams after their "Surfers" drag days. Those guys made anything fast.

Amazing that two future TV commentators (Hobbs and Sam Posey) were right together for a portion of this race.
