Josef Inigo is an important step towards being with your family for all that we know that you were not there and they don't like that either lol no it's okay now lol it's been like that long time for you and you呃呃呃我就说嘛……一下这里没有你我就呃我在等着你哦 I am not going back in time for my iPad to be continue on my landscape view of these games and the app is very good to have the best friend in my life and is a good old app that is a good 😊 app for me an app that is very important for the iPad and the iPad version of this game and is very very fun to use with this game app very good game and play it on the app app and the app is very good app and I love it the app is very good app once you figure Pokemon isn't the issue of your the Pokemon battle or something you have have no idea how many people can tell your story about your own type
Wow... I know this is an old video, but as someone just getting into theory for the purposes of jazz guitar, the demonstration/explanation of the dorian mode being dark but having the F major give "hope" was really beautiful. I don't know how to play piano, but applying your theory lessons has made me quite a better guitarist, and I hope it continues. Thank you!
I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR ALL OF YOUR BRILLIANT TEACHING. I AM 85 YEARS OLD AND HAVE BEEN PLAYING & WRITING ALL MY LIFE MOSTLY BY EAR. YOU COULD HAVE SAVED ME THOUSANDS OF HOURS OF USELESS STRUGGLE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT CHORDS. NOW I KNOW WHAT I AM DOING.
Arr Ronald! I'm sorry for my very late reply - but I just saw your comment and it made my day. I'm really pleased to hear this, thank you so much for your kind words. Julian
Good evening Julian! , my name is Andrew Romero and I just saw your program today and I'm really impressed, I like the way that you simplify your way of teaching "Music" it's actually very encouraging, I'm heading out on my way from work tomorrow to buy me one of your books. Thank you, and have a blessed night.
Awesome. Thanks a ton! As a working singer/songwriter and voice coach, I've decided it would be silly not to get this sorted in my head. Your video is great for a few reasons: You speak clearly, the on screed text is awesome, the song samples are super helpful/relatable, and most importantly, the info is super useful and clearly explained. THANK YOU!
Comment of the week! Thanks so much Jenn, really pleased you enjoyed this video, I love the theory and am glad to hear you're taking an interest too! You might also like my video on called 'church modes' - that's very similar to this video.
I've been following you for years and it amazes all that you know. you always explain in a way that the novice or intermediate would understand. truly amazing! thank you.
Julian your tutorial videos just keep getting better and better! Apart from the actual content you're teaching it is all those little details, be it the chosen background music or colors and animated text when going over to the next topic. Simply a pleasure to watch. Sure we could do without these extra efforts in editing but is is just so much more fun and shows how dedicated you are.
Arr thanks so much! Means a lot that someone noticed - I do put thought into the fonts and interludes, and I like that my video style is evolving naturally and becoming it's own thing. It's weird because now I can't imagine making a video without the interludes. Thanks a lot :)
This is great. I've been wanting to learn some ways to improve and change my ambient music, and I've already learned a lot from this channel. I'll definitely be buying your book and going through all the videos. You present great information in a straight forward way. I also appreciate how you get right to the point, and that your audio is well recorded.
"My Funny Valentine " -- melodic minor! Thus very easy to improvise to improvise on. On the other hand, it switches to natural minor because there's an A flat Major chord in there, too. Love your lessons, Julian!

Thank you for this exploration of Minor Scales Julian. Your Jazz theory ebook is really excellent. Colourful and clear graphics. I have it on my iPad for sitting and reading carefully. In combination with your UA-cam videos, we now have a truly thorough and enjoyable introduction to Jazz Piano.
Thanks so much Alan! I'm really happy to hear this. I designed it with an iPad in mind - easy to glide through the pages, and can be read at the piano. And I'm glad this minor scales video was helpful too. Thank you for your support and encouragement. Julian
+Gabriela Stultz Thank you so much Gabriela! That means a lot to me, glad you liked this one. You might also like my 'Modes Lesson' which is very similar to this one
Miko Montgomery Wow - thanks so much Miko. So happy to hear you liked this one. I also made 2 very similar videos to this one, called 'MODES LESSON', and '4 EXOTIC SCALES' which you might also like. Thanks for the comment :)
jazztutorial My pleasure. I'll check out the other vids too. You're such a great teacher. How about developing a video on how to MAXIMIZE one's practice time. Surely there are concepts as well as licks that can help a player make the most out of their time. I've got my own theories; I'd love to hear yours. Carry on....
I love how you give so many examples from all kinds of different styles of music (so effortlessly too..!). It makes your video very different from other UA-cam videos on this topic. Really good.
This vid is really good. How easy you explain and reduce to just 4 notes all the mess around the minors scales. In Latin America we are very familiar with harmonic minor, and mosf of our folk music is built around this mode/scale. I think it will be a good idea to create a video like the ii-V-I with dominant scale usage recommendations, but with this scales. I've also like the natural minor sound, is very deep and interesting. Keep going with your work. The people need to desmitify this One and For All!!!
This is so great. I'm a self taught guitarist and I know a basic structure of the natural minor and harmonic minor scales. I play metal mostly, but I do like to go for a Danny Elfman influence so I use a lot of playful harmonic minor scale melodies and theatrics but it's the chords that have given me a light on what I can accompany to the melodies.
Thanks so much Mark - I appreciate this inspiring comment. I feel like I'm finally getting into my stride with the video making, I'm going to be uploading a new lesson every Friday from now on - stay tuned :)
This is great stuff! - played classical piano my whole life, and now trying to learn and transfer some jazz theory to bluegrass fiddle...not easy but your approach was fantastic. Thanks!
Thanks Evan, glad these videos help. I was the same, classical for the first 10 years, then started reading everything I could on jazz, I think classical to jazz is a natural progression.
these are some of my most used sounds even parts or playing a chord while playing some notes to get my melody filled without playing to much for the basses part
I subscribed to your channel and added this instructional video to my saved column because it's excellent. - and it has usable information all right here (!). Per example ; there are four minor scales .
Wow, thank you so much for this tutorial. I'm working on learning what common scales sound like so I can use them or try my own and just you playing an excerpt from songs that I know or have heard before helped open that up so much for me. Not to mention the rest of your information helps with actually listening to what I'm hearing.
A good, concise explanation but one serious omission: the melodic minor uses the major sixth and major seventh ascending, BUT minor sixth and minor seventh DESCENDING. That difference in ascending and descending versions makes the "melodic minor" unique among all the scales .

Excellent stuff, best piano / Jazz tutorials on the web, i'm an electronic producer but looking to further my theory knowledge and this is the best i've come across.
Great video! I didn’t know there were this many minor scales. I am curious about what scale Jamiroquoi uses in “Shes a Fast Persuader”. The riff at the end is amazing
That's a good track! I just played it and it SOUNDS as if it's in plain old natural E♭ minor: E♭-F-G♭-A♭-B♭-C♭-D♭-E♭ - assuming I haven't missed any notes or chords with C♮ or D♮; there is a clever use of an F♭ accidental in parts, of which I approve. :)
Just discovered this, better late than never huh? Thank you for your clarity and playing examples from popular or fairly known tunes as examples. Very helpful for a newbie piano learner.

I think I'm most familiar with the Dorian scale. Fela Kuti is one of my favourite examples; just about everything he did was based on it. Mostly I minor/IV major chords as you mentioned (e.g. Gentleman), but with occasional variations like I minor/II minor/III major (e.g. Water No Get Enemy). The Dorian mode is also common in psychedelic and blues rock music. E.g. Riders on the Storm by The Doors; Oh Yeah by Can. And I think I minor/IV major is basically Pink Floyd's default jam, haha.

What I like to do with that Cm6 is to play a riff up and down the keyboard in the 7th degree over a Cm7 then drop down to the Cm6.
J Charos please share the riff!
Great tutorial! I like how you play songs in between each scale to demonstrate it
I've been playing for a long time and have a degree in music. This is fabulous lesson. Congrats and thank you.
One of the great things about your teaching is that you really know how to break a concept down and explain it fully! Thank you for this!
Bob

I’ve just started learning these scales and this video is the only one which made sense to me. The examples of well known songs was very helpful.
"My Funny Valentine " -- melodic minor! Thus very easy to improvise to improvise on. On the other hand, it switches to natural minor because there's an A flat Major chord in there, too. Love your lessons, Julian!
I loved this! fantastic delivery and giving examples of how they're used is golden!!! subscribed
I'm a guitar player and have had trouble understanding the minor scales. Your video helped put it in perspective. Thanks!
Julian, your videos are top notch. Lots of educational theory and fantastic examples. Your explanation is heads above others.
Thank you, genuinely helped a lot . Peace love and unity
Hello Julian, These vids are fantastic. The explanation of the four minor scales and the sound/mood explanation is really straightforward.
by far the best minor chord/scale lesson on UA-cam

As expected, an excellent presentation. And I will return to it often. You’ve become a ‘go-to’ educator. Well done, as always.
i have been looking for such clear explanations for years. Now it is very clear. Thanks for the video!

Best jazz Chanel ever. I'll be buying you book here soon as my finances are in order. You selling hard copies?
Thanks Joshua! Only digital copies at the moment, but there's links to videos which only works in digital format. Glad you liked this one!
Fascinating. The Vertigo rendition is absolutely haunting.
Thanks Michael! Yes I'm glad I finally found a relevant way to discuss that soundtrack in a video
Hi Julian, I am a guitarist and I have learned so much from your videos. Thank you for sharing . You explain very smoothly and to the point.
Clear with great examples. That's great teaching.
several years on and this is absolute gold. such a great teaching approach.
When you played that Usher song? SLICK. Love your tutorials, they really take the mystique out of those really complicated sounding harmonies.
Very clear, instructive, informative. You are an excellent teacher!
+Gabriela Stultz Thank you so much Gabriela! That means a lot to me, glad you liked this one.
You might also like my 'Modes Lesson' which is very similar to this one
best ever explanation of the minor scales, and great examples.
Super helpful. Love the examples in between. The clatter of your keys is a tad distracting, but really lovely instruction.
Perfect example of the perfect lesson. Clear, concise, practical, and helpful.
WOW. Thanks so much. Carry on....

amazing tutorial! just hearing the songs you played in the 4 different styles was enough for me to subscribe and rewatch your vids over and over
I love how you give so many examples from all kinds of different styles of music (so effortlessly too..!). It makes your video very different from other UA-cam videos on this topic. Really good.
Two examples are Of Dorian are Scarborough Fair and the traditional Celtic folk tune, Cooley’s Reel. There are lots of Celtic tunes in E Dorian.
Excellent lesson! "Yesterday" by the Beatles uses D melodic minor going up and D natural minor (or F) going down.
thank you for a wonderful explanation between the minor scales and the application of them against the backing cord structures... very helpful :)
Brilliantly and simply explained - wow!
This man is the best teacher I have ever used, tripled my knoledge in a month
This is the best minor scales explanation I have seen!

So easy and so complicated and with song examples' extras. Thank you so much, man. You are very talented!

Thank you so much for all this useful examples, it's absolutely clear and audible and easy to understand and what not. GREAT!
Your excellent video has given me a lot to think about as I practice on my chromatic button accordion. I think I will learn a great deal. Thank you.
these are some of my most used sounds even parts or playing a chord while playing some notes to get my melody filled without playing to much for the basses part
I play guitar but these lessons are VERY helpful and very clear, I appreciate the free content, this stuff is top-notch.

Very clear explanation. Thanks.
Another fantastic lesson - thanks so much!
Thank you Jim! You're welcome :)
This is a terrific video, Very well explained.
this was brilliant and priceless data.
I learnt a lot today. thanksa ton.

thank you so much , first time i really understand the minor scales and their application, merci and bravo
Thanks, I am always looking for video-education that supports my music goals. This video was very clear and helpful.
I understood clearly, it has so many great examples.
your lessons are great thank for the chords.

Most informative. With the examples Julian goes beyond the tedious traditional explanations you find in theorybooks elsewhere.
Thanks so much Ron! I'm trying to get the right balance of both explanation and demonstration. Glad you enjoyed this one :)
Fantastic lesson! They all have their specific mood, indeed :). I think the Dorian mode is very calming and makes you feel happy and peaceful. :)
Excellent explanation of minor scales- I haven't seen this information anywhere else. Thanks
Thanks for not waiting time, very well explanation. Love your straight forward approach.
Thanks so much Ken - I appreciate that
I just binge watched your jazz videos and its like so clear and it helps me a lot. YUR A HERO THANKSS :O!!!!!!
Very logically described...great tips to me...Thanks so much!!!
Thank you for the post!
Just discovered this, better late than never huh? Thank you for your clarity and playing examples from popular or fairly known tunes as examples. Very helpful for a newbie piano learner.
Thanks for teaching me, you're the best piano teacher ever!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you! Very clear, interesting and informative (from a music theory novice with a classical background)
keep this up please,it really helped me
wonderful sir. It was a great help. Thank you
I think I'm most familiar with the Dorian scale. Fela Kuti is one of my favourite examples; just about everything he did was based on it. Mostly I minor/IV major chords as you mentioned (e.g. Gentleman), but with occasional variations like I minor/II minor/III major (e.g. Water No Get Enemy). The harmonic minor example that you attribute to Coolio is really a Stevie Wonder composition. The song was one of the first to use a synthesizer (the Yamaha GX-1) to sound like a full string section.[2] Built initially from synth tracks rather than from a drummer setting the basic rhythm, the song was later augmented with rhythm performances from Ray Maldonado and Bobbye Hall, especially featuring finger cymbals.[3]..Coolio just did a little vocal masturbation.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate your music sessions. I'm learning a lot. I will sign up at the beginning of June. Again. Thank you.
This is educational! Thanks!
Your lessons and playing are great man, thank you very much
perfect teacher.. excellent, very clear.. bless you sir... thank you very much..!
hey,Bradley, nice as always, and i am waiting for the new thing every time, but still every time i need a song from start to the end, please could you give any song as a hole thing, for example here you started with the "message it the bottle",could you continue with your version, regards
Hey Tom, sure!
HARMONIC MINOR = 'Survivor' Destiny's Child. 'Sweet Dreams' Eurythmics.
MELODIC MINOR = Vertigo by Bernard Herrmann (the only music I can think of that stays melodic minor throughout).
DORIAN MODE - 'Mad World' by Gary Jules (throughout).

Thank you Bob! Yes, the Harry Potter theme is a good one, harmonic minor with a bit of chromatacism towards the end. Thanks for the comment :)
