In this lesson I'm going to show you a super easy trick you can use to help you totally crush it on the 5 string bass...
If you're a 4 stringer who wants to make the leap...
Or you're already playing a 5 but hardly ever use the B string...
This lesson is going to get you utilising that B string more than you ever had before... it takes literally minutes to get this trick down... and because the whole thing is based on just 1 simple shape... it's EASY!
Ooo... and for fun, in this I also show you my "practice rig of doom"... you could almost put it in a backpack... and last week, I used it for a gig!
As always, see you in the shed...
    Scott 🙂

Thanks Scott. I’ve owned 5 strings when I felt the need to give them a shot and have always wound up trading them back in for four strings because I always found exactly what you were saying about when to incorporate that “B” string and make it sound good. I also always struggled with getting a clear tone out of the “B” string without it sounding muffled and muddy. If I get the inspiration to give it another shot I will certainly remember this video. This was a real eye opener. Great lesson.

Scott, I'm glad you brought up using the other notes on your B string above the fifth fret. Up until recently, notes above the fifth fret all sounded like thud, thud, thud. Now with 35 inch scale and stronger necks and body shapes on the 34 inch, scale tonalities are much clearer. I recently bought a 34 inch scale 5 string. It is a different animal. Play the Chicken on the low B at the 11 th fret. The newer basses and of course your budget make big difference. Excellent lesson as always. Student for Life!

I'm a piano player, and I basically think about things in "what do I do next?". That by itself takes a ton of practice, it's harder to think of it like I'm playing shapes. Sometimes I'll just practice right hand, or sometimes my left, but when I dissect it, I'm basically solidifying the shapes my hands make when I know a certain chord is supposed to "be played next". It has to be concrete, and I have to only spend less than a split second to make the jumps on the piano to make things sounds the way I want to. Thanks for the upload, I bought a 5 string bass recently and this was a good lesson.

Here's a very simple way to use the B
Shapes are great, but just think INTERVALS.
    Let's say you're playing a G on the E string
The note right above it on the B is a perfect fifth.
Move up two frets on the B string..... that's the perfect fourth!!
Then, depending on the key, you can EASILY find the other intervals.
Just memorize THAT pattern/shape, and the B string actually becomes second nature!!

Thanks Scott, I recently acquired a five string and yep, it's become a thumb rest. I used to play four string, and was meh..pretty mediocre player..Im working on that day by day, your videos help tremendously( when I kick myself in the ass and actually play and 'practice'.) Thebass I have right now is an Ibanez 5 string , and I notice I just don't have 'room'..particularly when I try to slap and thump..( that is till eluding me but we trudge on). I am wondering what you think of the Indian bass player Mohini Dey, and if you have made any attempts to get her in an interview..she is incredible. Happy summer Scott. :)

You might be thinking of the names of the notes but clearly you are thinking which scale tones (relative to your root position) to use. Call it a box shape if that scares you less but it comes down to knowing where the appropriate scale tones are for the chord you are playing. Many of the grooves will end up using well established patterns that work any place on the neck relative to a given root position and will be patterns you already know on the other strings. There are no shortcuts to develop this understanding. Eventually it seems you will want to know the note names on the low B string since sometimes they will be the root you to use. What Scott mentions here will help you dive in a bit but do yourself a favor, take your time to really learn how to incorporate the extra strings (for 5 or 6 string) into your scales and arpeggios in every key and for every scale type and in the long run you will have the freedom to play better than treating things as a series of boxes to memorize.

I'm relatively new to playing bass, but I love metal, and when I play my five string I do the opposite. I avoid the G string because I don't play a lot of stuff that uses it and the extra neck thickness makes it a tad harder. I love the B string!

The 125 seems to work well. Also the Dunlop Marcus Millers work well too!! Some gauges work better than others. My strings are getting pretty dull but the B still works well.

On my five string bass I hate tuning below drop A so I just capo what ever I want to tune to and use the B like an E. If I want to play drop C I capo the third fret in drop A. If I want to play D standard I tune to standard and capo the third fret or whatever tuning I'm playing. That's about all I use the B for unless I'm playing Amon Amarth or Slipknot in drop A.

Mine too. It's been Gunsmoke nonstop since 8 this morning. I could have sworn Matt shot that same dude about four or five episodes ago.👑🎸🎵

Scott love your lessons even though I'm not close to a pro level like yourself and most followers, but I need some advice even from you or any or your followers, I have a 12yr old son that wanna start playing bass and even though I taught myself (reason why i'm not good) would love to start him in the right direction, what to teach him first memorize notes in the bass or playing scales or chords i'm lost, please help thanx in advance..

If you think you're bad because you self-taught yourself then I'm sorry to say you will never be good even with instruction

so true, I guess what i mean is I need direction, bc I think I missed something by no going I guess in a structured way (if that make sense) and don't wanna do that trying to teach my son or at least direct him in a "correct" way

rgesualdo you sound like a great guy. Like your son fly and figure out his own way on it there's nothing wrong with showing a couple things very small things but then it's up to him to shape how he's going to do it that's a true "teacher" give him the very basics and then let him fly from there you'll get a much better result

The great thing with the interfaces that are about now ghetto is just as workable, often more so, than something more substantial. Hell even an iTrack pocket and an iPad/iPhone and you can get a decent sound going and that's dirt cheap. I think people get too bound up in having gear, I'm no exception, rather than fully utilising what they have at hand.

Ok I'm confused, now you have a glove on the string hand only. recently was both hands, and before that was fretting hand. I'm glad you can bare hand your fretting side, but does this mean that maybe this will run it's course, and you'll be able to not wear any gloves anymore?
