WCW could of made Honky Tonk Man a top heel star, if they had paired him with either Col Robert Parker or rejoin Jimmy Hart and have a great run with the US title, he could of drawn alot of heat, had they done it like that, but as usual WCW was always famous of not knowing how use a star, especially like the Honky Tonk Man. Honky Tonk Man could have gotten some great matches and great feuds during his time in WCW with WCW stars besides Johnny B Badd aka Marc Mero like DDP, Arn Anderson, Flyin Brian, Dustin Rhodes, Marcus Bagwell, imagine a match with Ricky Steamboat the same man that he took the IC title from during their WWF days. Honky Tonk Man Vs Sting, Hulk Hogan, imagine Jimmy Hart turning on Hogan and rejoining the Honky Tonk Man, Imagine Honky Tonk Man Vs Ric Flair that would have been a great as well, I think WCW could have done alot of great things with the Honky Tonk Man during his WCW run had he been used properly, and had him either paired with Col Robert Parker or rejoin Jimmy Hart.
Only thing he is good storytelling in shoot interviews. He was an average Memphis style wrestler why his career dropped off after 91'. Like road warrior animal legends in their own heads for what they really drew. I always compare how good wrestlers were from how bad you wanted their Hasbro figure and with HTM he was one of the last I bought to complete my collection along with Virgil...

Honky had a good run in WWF but after his IC reign his gimmick was starting to become stale. He needed to reinvent himself which he never did. Plus he is a bit of a complainer and negative attitude. He had charisma and I think he could have possibly had a little bit longer run but I think his attitude got in the way.
It takes years to get a gimmick and hit with it, and most wrestlers eventually find that one gimmick and never let it go... Honky knew that this Intercontinental Title run was going to be his peek, the reason the IC Title reign helped him was cause people wanted to see him lose the title but he just never did, he would always escape with the title... Warrior destroying him was what the people wanted to see, but that moment was the end of his career... Also Hulk Hogan reinvented himself once with Hollywood Hogan... go figure he would later have one of the greatest matches of all time with Hollywood The Rock... but in terms of gimmicks many wrestlers once they hit a big name gimmick there is no reinventing yourself unless you got other strengths... Honky mostly had psychology and promo... his in ring was decent enough and very safe... but he did not have athleticism to fall back on, he did not have any big finish and unless he sacrificed his sideburns and his signature look, they would forever be calling him the Honky Tonk Man... did you ever meet that wrestler Tensai aka Albert aka whatever other names he used in the past... His gimmick was the peek of his career there is no more reinventing option only a handful are talented enough to ever do multiple gimmicks... Also many gimmicks are often sometimes just a slight variation of their original gimmick...
Yup, he's the only one that would've cared if he won or lost some stupid match. If you can work and have a good gimmick, you can lose almost every match and people still love you! I've seen cactus jack lose so many over the years, I've lost count. Still thought it was a great gimmick. Sure, he'll probably lose, but you could never be too sure! Made it interesting

Back during WCW I read a article in PWI magazine saying honky tonk said by bishoff said I'm his gimmick was weak and he was a B card wrestler at best in WCW honky tonk got offended and left shortly after
He was part of the legendary Tupelo Concession Stand Brawl, Honky Tonk Wayne in Stampede, and such before ever joining the WWF or WCW. Some people commenting on here only know of him from the WWF. If don't know the history of the business your opinion is just ignorance.
@kellismith4329 exactly and he was over which got him to the WWF. Some people just think he popped up one day and Vince gave him the Intercontinental Championship. They do the same with Hogan without realizing that Hogan was on fire in the AWA and doing record business before the WWF. These guys worked to learn the business.
the guy was somewhat intelligent but was in his 30's, had little wrestling industry experience, and given an executive job out of nowhere. He Bullshitted his way to a good spot that he didn't deserve.
I thought Eric fired him because Honky was holding him up for a contract in front of other wrestlers and wouldn't go out to wrestle unless he got a contract so Eric fired him on the spot, also Eric always said he hated the Honky gimmick. So he's claiming he was there to help while justifying refusing to job and walking out on a ppv match 🤦 disco inferno oddly enough did what honkey tono would have 😝

lol, he is literally one of the biggest BS carnies in the business. Highly entertaining to watch but he's as carny as carny can be. Old school!
