Honky doesn't get enough recognition for being a truly great heel. He was only guy at the time able to turn both Jake and Macho into popular babyfaces after they both had runs as two of the most hated heels themselves. Not to mention the formation of the Mega Powers. Extremely underrated. And his shoot interviews never get old.
Honky gets ragged on by some old timers for being “fake” or “phony” in the ring as far as how he worked, but who ever said that was a bad thing? Nobody. Honky was a song and dance man. He’s the first to tell you he was, and that’s just as, if not more important a style to have in the business as a shoot/believable or acrobatic/high flying style. Think about this. The Will Ospreys, Ricochets, Zack Sabres, etc of the business are fun to watch (and I am a fan), but are never the top guys in the business. They may headline an indie here and there, maybe Japan, but they are not the top dogs in Spirts Entertainment/pro wrestling. Honky, the “phony song and dance man” was selling out arenas all over the world while working for the biggest company in the world. No flips. No top rope moves. No crazy bumps. Not that aim ragging on that style of wrestling, they all have their place. But my point is, he doesn’t get enough credit for becoming an upper echelon guy in a time when the WWF was stacked with talent.
@@gatorjohnnythe problem with him is he has a really big ego he actually thought he was a great he and lawler are exactly a like they both are egotists and they actually believe they were great wrestlers and they weren’t but I will admit that they both were very entertaining and charismatic
the guy was somewhat intelligent but was in his 30's, had little wrestling industry experience, and given an executive job out of nowhere. He Bullshitted his way to a good spot that he didn't deserve.
Crazy to think every single thing he’s said in this shoot interview - he said in his drunken Youshoot. If you saw that first - you would have thought he was lying.
Only thing he is good storytelling in shoot interviews. He was an average Memphis style wrestler why his career dropped off after 91'. Like road warrior animal legends in their own heads for what they really drew. I always compare how good wrestlers were from how bad you wanted their Hasbro figure and with HTM he was one of the last I bought to complete my collection along with Virgil...
Wayne didn't stand a chance with Bishoff.. Dirty E was smoking Hogans pole HARD.. And anyone who is a threat to Hogan was either forced out of the company or they sat at home and got paid for years!! Wayne was one of those guys who was there for the money, and Wayne always did business
The Honky Tonk Man was one of my favorite wrestlers of all time just an entertaining guy I love great wrestlers but I also like guys who entertain me and make me laugh and he certainly is one of them thanks for the great memories Honky Tonk Man. I are the wrestlers who have entertained me far from their wrestling ability also,Disco Inferno Dude Love Slick Funkasaurus
Honky had a good run in WWF but after his IC reign his gimmick was starting to become stale. He needed to reinvent himself which he never did. Plus he is a bit of a complainer and negative attitude. He had charisma and I think he could have possibly had a little bit longer run but I think his attitude got in the way.
It takes years to get a gimmick and hit with it, and most wrestlers eventually find that one gimmick and never let it go... Honky knew that this Intercontinental Title run was going to be his peek, the reason the IC Title reign helped him was cause people wanted to see him lose the title but he just never did, he would always escape with the title... Warrior destroying him was what the people wanted to see, but that moment was the end of his career... Also Hulk Hogan reinvented himself once with Hollywood Hogan... go figure he would later have one of the greatest matches of all time with Hollywood The Rock... but in terms of gimmicks many wrestlers once they hit a big name gimmick there is no reinventing yourself unless you got other strengths... Honky mostly had psychology and promo... his in ring was decent enough and very safe... but he did not have athleticism to fall back on, he did not have any big finish and unless he sacrificed his sideburns and his signature look, they would forever be calling him the Honky Tonk Man... did you ever meet that wrestler Tensai aka Albert aka whatever other names he used in the past... His gimmick was the peek of his career there is no more reinventing option only a handful are talented enough to ever do multiple gimmicks... Also many gimmicks are often sometimes just a slight variation of their original gimmick...
Yup, he's the only one that would've cared if he won or lost some stupid match. If you can work and have a good gimmick, you can lose almost every match and people still love you! I've seen cactus jack lose so many over the years, I've lost count. Still thought it was a great gimmick. Sure, he'll probably lose, but you could never be too sure! Made it interesting
Back during WCW I read a article in PWI magazine saying honky tonk said by bishoff said I'm his gimmick was weak and he was a B card wrestler at best in WCW honky tonk got offended and left shortly after
He was part of the legendary Tupelo Concession Stand Brawl, Honky Tonk Wayne in Stampede, and such before ever joining the WWF or WCW. Some people commenting on here only know of him from the WWF. If don't know the history of the business your opinion is just ignorance.
@kellismith4329 exactly and he was over which got him to the WWF. Some people just think he popped up one day and Vince gave him the Intercontinental Championship. They do the same with Hogan without realizing that Hogan was on fire in the AWA and doing record business before the WWF. These guys worked to learn the business.
Eric missed out on Honkey Tonk Man they couldve dressed him in black for NWO a big WWF guy and the greatest IC champion ever but dont use him , think he was either TV or US champ and use him like Vince have him make the belt mean something and get over a young star.
He doesn't grasp that if you want to be paid by the man, you have to do with the man says. You don't have to like it, but trying to pretend otherwise it's just arguing against reality.
But he had been doing it without a contract for months, was told November. November came and went. Meanwhile, everyone else around him is getting contracts. He did the right thing, Bischoff was an ass no wonder that company failed.
Honky Tonk was such an easy draw, leave it to Early Eric Bischoff to look at a guy that Vince had a strap on for 2 years solid and think "There's nothing I can do with this guy." Bischoff was a great creative mind, but all he knew how to do was hotshot at the end of the day.
This guy was a one hit wonder. He was a nobody before they gave him the IC title and was a nobody after he lost it. Acts like he's some big star because Steamboat put him over in that bs match. He couldn't hold Steamboat's jock and that push against him was disgraceful.
it is not as simple as someone's ego... once you lose on TV everyone knows about it, he did not mind those dark house shows that no one would ever get to see and so on... but have you ever noticed how as soon as Kofi lost everyone went on about that match, but if it had been some random house show, no one would really care or even really know about it... house shows were just what you did along the road, the televised matches are what gets you more over on a world wide level and he was not risking whatever bit of status he still had without getting paid well enough for it...
Great he walked out in $1000 a night on a major company to go make nothing on no company. How do you just stuck it out? Who knows what could’ve happened he basically took the option where he knew zero would happen.
HTM tried to hold up Bischoff right before a PPV, because the boys used to pull that crap on promoters back in the day. Sorry HTM, this is WCW not some backwoods promotion in the Appalachian Mountains somewhere. lol
You know how they say youre the last person to know when your girl i cheating on you? I STILL dont think Honky Tonk Man knows he was a flash in the pan lol. "NO TV losses" LMAO WHAT?!

Honk Tonk Man did his thing!..he took his character and made a name for himself. I enjoyed those days.
I have to admit i never liked the honky tonk man until now hes always been a great promo / shoot interview
I believe EVERYTHING he says here. Bischoff lies about everything.

@@takerdustI agree.
Bischoff was not a wrestling promoter. He was a tv producer who bs his way to a wcw executive job.
@@takerdust I actually always thought he just wouldn’t “job” to Johnny B. Badd. I had NO CLUE he didn’t have a contract.

HTM doesn't get enough credit for being instrumental in the "shoot" industry.
Agreed! Wayne had one of the most NOTORIOUS Characters ever in WWF!!

Honky was correct.

of course they were.
Honky shoots are fascinating. Can you post the entire Honky shoot.
3:11 Great point by Honky Tonk a red flag.
Honky was a great heel in the WWF.
They are better when he has his Gatorade bottle 🥃
I usually avoid Bruce Pritchards and Eric's shoots because they're mostly BS.

He left the WWF in 1991 not seven years before

Bischoff hated Elvis and he took it out on HTM.

I was a huge fan if his here in Calgary in the early 80’s we went to the matches every friday
