  • These beautiful and sacred temples are perched on hilltops providing a very peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. We visited during our trip to Shima in April 2023.
Tara Devi Temple and Vaishno Devi Temple Shimla
Tara Devi temple is dedicated to the goddess of stars, Tara Devi, is about 11 kms from Shimla city center. The last couple of kms to the temple is steep climb and with number of hairpin bends. Tara Devi Temple is 250+ years old, established in 1766. Vaishno Devi Temple is about 100 mtrs away from Tara Devi temple. You can walk to this temple.
Both temples are very well maintained. Beautiful architecture, made up of wood and stone in Kath Khuni architecture and the scenery around is very serene.
It was not crowded when we went. It was so peaceful up there at both the temples. If you have enough time in hand, you can simply spend all day here enjoying the view, simply sitting and meditating, feeling the peaceful vibes.
    Nag Temple, Naldehra
Naldehra is 20+ kms from Shimla. Nag Temple is located in the jungle near Naldehra Golf Course. If you take the horse ride, they will allow you to spend some time here visiting the temple. From the temple, you can get the view of the Golf Course which is one of the oldest golf courses of the country.
    Sankat Mochan Temple, Shimla
Located just about 5 kms from Shimla. The temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. As Lord Hanuman is believed to be the remover of all difficulties, this is called Sankat Mochan. It is believed that by visiting and praying at this temple, you will be free of all your difficulties. It is a temple complex with other temples as well of God Ganesha, Shiva and beautiful Ram and Sita idol. You can also worship Navagraha Idols here. The Temple is established by Neem Karoli Baba in 1950s. As situated on a hilltop, there is a scenic view of the city, the mountains and the valleys.
    Kali Bari Temple, Shimla
Temple is situated on Bantony Hill, Shimla. This one is very near to mall road, just a short walk from the Scandal Point at Mall Road.
Temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali known as Goddess Shyamala. The name Shimla is derived from this name Shyamala. According to the history, Goddess Shyamala Temple was constructed in 1845 and was situated in Jakhu Hill. Later Birtish Rulers relocated it to the current location and was converted into Kali Bari by Bengali Devotees.
    Jakhu Hill Temple, Shimla
Jakhu Hill is the highest point in Shimla. There is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman here. There is a huge Statue of Lord Hanuman
which is 108 ft height. This huge statue in orange colour is prominently visible from everywhere in Shimla. This temple is reachable by walk from the Ridge, roapway from the mall road or drive upto the temple parking. Walk from the Ridge is a very steep climb. We went by taxi. Drive to the temple is also very beautiful.
    Kali Tibba Temple, Chail
Kali Tibba is located in Chail, Solan District. Temple is dedicated to Ma Kali Devi. Fort like structure in white marble (and nothing else to distract) starts way before the parking area and hence while entering itself you start feeling the peaceful vibes here. The calmness this place offers has to be experienced by visiting once. My recording does not do any justice to the real, serene atmosphere this place has.
In Hinduism, Goddess Kali embodies the power of creation and destruction in one entity. She transcends good and evil. In most deities, she appears angered, aroused, spreads her tongue out in the demon form. However here at this temple, I felt the deity of Ma Kali is so pleasant and attractive. One can feel the mother-like protection she is believed to be giving to those she loves. You feel like standing there forever in-front of her admiring the beauty of Ma Kali. You feel like communicating all your difficulties and problems to her like how you would with your mother. You will come out feeling her blessings and protection.
Kali Ka Tibba height is about 7500 ft which is at a higher altitude than Shimla. Surrounding this temple is a breathtaking scenery of Shivalik Range. Undoubtedly this is one of the beautiful temples I have seen so far.
These are the temples we have visited during our trip to Shimla. I heard there are many more sacred temples in and around Shimla which makes it a perfect place for a spiritual trip as well.
