Fantastic overview, Joe! I think this translation is great for its purpose. Hopefully, it will be well received and help promote healing. I really like that they captured the female aspect of the Holy Spirit in the creation story. I had always known it as that in the Jewish world.

Guess what my next purchase will be.
Looking forward to the idea spreading to other indigenous peoples. A pre Anglo-Saxon Celtic adaptation, and an Australian Aboriginal rendering may be just as valuable… off the top of my head.

Great review! I've had my eye on this translation for awhile -- I really need to get my hands on a copy! The prologue you highlighted is beautiful; I agree that an OT translation would be very interesting, but since it took 20 years for the NT to coalesce....
One of my favorite things about various translations of the Bible, beyond literary merit or strict accuracy, is how different tellings can help reframe and deepen my understanding of individual passages and of the entire story. I think this translation could be a valuable tool for reading the gospel with fresh eyes, helping me to actually think about what it is saying instead of assuming I know it already due to familiarity.

If the English translation is inaccurate for the indigenous people due to cultural differences in how they understand language, then is the Indigenous translation inaccurate for non-indigenous people because of how non-indigenous people understand language? Are you and I qualified to read FNV and NIV next to each other and make claim if the two are equivalent? What about KJV and NIV? The KJV was written in 1600, but my understanding of language is from 2000, am I able to compare the two and know if they are equivalent? Can a modern person read ancient Hebrew and Latin, being as these two languages are defunct, and still understand them? We can go on and on...
I'm addressing the concept of incommensurate language due to people having different lived paradigms -- a variation of the ideas from Thomas Kuhn's SSR. Do you and I see the same color red? When I say "red" can you understand what I mean? My childhood room was painted red, therefore do we have the same understanding?
I have no problem with the FNV. I do have a problem with justifying it with a worn out language game. (This language game probably existed before Kuhn, but here I first encountered it.) An intellectually honest statement is simply, "They wrote this 'translation' because they like it better." Sounds good to me.
These are great questions. At the end of the day, however, readability and comprehension wins out over philosophical punditry. Decisions must be made to make God's word accessible despite the complexities of translation or else we'll never get translations in the first place.
Also, I am not familiar with Kuhn.
There is a hard cover of this... hopefully there will be a leather bound one once they complete the old testament... they are working on psalms and proverbs atm

God has given me such a love for the first nations and was so excited to see God trying to reach those harmed by the church in such a beautiful and honoring way... was glad to see your review... especially since one of the other reviews I saw was so offensive and disrespectful... they called this a heretical translation... also tried calling it a paraphrase... basically they showed their ignorance to the goal of this translation and of First Nations culture and beliefs. Thank you for giving this an honorable review 💛

@@joest.eggbenedictus1896 i agree... it's vile... they seem to forget we had the word put into English for us to understand.. and that there are no perfect translations in English and things were put into concepts we can understand easier in dynamic equivalent translations... which is what the first nations version is... speaking of which God gave me a hook up to get free copies to hand out.. as well as other bibles and bible based materials.. i am so stoked 💛💛💛
