I explained to another user that I have no idea what the yield should be for these chips specifically, normally I just dump RAM IC's in with other stuff that needs the same process. What comes out is what comes out. From watching other you tube video's the results vary for these chips. I do keep all my wastes in labelled containers so the filters and remains are still there. I might give it a go and see if I missed much but will have to wait a while, got a few other things on the go at the minute. p.s. Have you any idea what the going rate per kilo is for these types of IC's? Thanks
@@scouseurbanminer5106 knowledgeable fella recommended soaking the magnetics in a brine solution to convert to oxides ( rust) , the resulting oxides can be rinsed away with hcl!
I would say you are low on the yield. You should be getting close to 1g per kg of ram but it does depend on what type of ram you are dealing with. The lowest i have had is about 0.75g/kg and highest is 2g/kg

I agree there may be a little more to get, in fact the temp stockpot definately has a thin layer settled out but it's taken over two weeks and doesn't look like a lot. A 4th and 5th extraction might get me another small bead but I don't think it would be any more than that and would require a lot more work and acid's. It is what it is on this occasion I'm afraid. I hope you're right and there is some trapped in the remains. I keep them all separate so can always re-visit to see if I missed anything. I already spent a long time putting the video together and its runtime is way more than I wanted. I was hoping to fit it all in 15 minutes as most people wont watch anymore than that. I would welcome some suggestions on what I could have done to increase the yield. Thanks again.
@@scouseurbanminer5106 gold can get trapped in carbon i.e activated carbon maybe try a pirahna solution if you are that brave but be warned it is very unforgiving and only do that if you are confident. But that said for the small amount of gold you are missing it might not be worth it.

I might make the full breakdown video in two different ways, most of the footage is done for the recovery, just a few last steps to work out but the vid is already 20 minutes long and that doesn’t include the refining steps. No way to make it shorter as it contains a lot of info and I actually narrate it in my scouse accent (which will be fun to read the comments afterwards when no one can understand my dialect 😂). Was thinking about releasing two separate files, a short abridged version say 8-10 minutes with soundtrack as well as the in depth full version with full talk through for people who prefer all the details, decisions made and steps taken. Won’t be for at least a month or two as I have too much on the go at the minute and can’t find the time I need

I hate bringing it up because you did such an awesome job, but I believe you should have incinerated the chips again to a white powder after you washed/gravity separated them. I expect that my result will be on the low end and there is some more to get so I never throw the wastes away. I save them all up labelled separately just in case. The video is more an example of what you should realistically expect. I figure if I can get that with my setup as it is then that’s a fair estimate, without spending thousands for equipment and running loads of batches to get your experience level up. I’ve read many times about a second incineration after pyrolysing the chips initially but I just went with the majority of the chips turned to fine powder just squeezing them with my fingers so I don’t know how much more burnt they could get. I agree a second incineration after milling may pay off with a higher yield but the only way I can think of for testing to check the voracity of it would be to do an even split of a large batch, by even I mean literally cutting the ram sticks in half and separating out the chips to see if there is a difference between identical batches and then refining them with lab level techniques. Could make for a good video to be fair, I might consider it for future content. In any case as I have the filtered remains I know I haven’t lost much and if there’s any there I will get it at some point, hopefully you’re right and there’s a few grams hidden away for the future. Time will tell on that. My old process used poor man’s nitric leaches to remove base metals and a side benefit of that would be the sulphuric acid would destroy the carbon similar to a wet ashing method preventing it from stealing the gold. I would have gone with that again but I’m out of sulphuric and getting it in the UK has become more difficult. I am working on a method where there is no need to burn the chips at all but rather grind them to fine powdered plastic then simply remove the plastic by sluicing. it will be a long time in the making as I have way too much stuff to get rid of first. I did a similar thing though with fewer RAMs. It seems the gold from the big RAMs is smaller. The small RAMs from laptop have more gold and the gold from their fingers though looking smaller is actually heavier than that of the big RAMs.

Didnt know laptop ram are better than desktop, you would think desktop fingers would be better just based on size but appears you have experience wiith that and they are better. I haven't tried laptop ram yet, I have just been breaking them up and putting them in with other things. I should have saved them up. I will save 10kg and have a go with them in the future.

Some of them don't even have an IC on their opposite side. The Laptop RAMs on the other hand have a minimum of 8 ICs with some even having up to 32 ICs. The maximum number of ICs on Desktop RAMs is 16. As for the fingers, the ones from laptop thou looking small, are heavier for sure.
Wait, what? You got roughly 6 g of gold from 10 kg of gold fingered ram memory. You could have sold it to board sort and gotten 6.8 g worth of cash and not worried about losing any money to premiums. Or all that time and chemicals I hope your yield was low and you find more gold somewhere

Hello man, first, you have my SUB #576. I like your analytical approach. I see, you do this on larger scale than me, so what works for me, may not be viable for you. For fingers I use HCl and a bit o hydrogen peroxide (30%), bubler, when solution turns brown (Cu2+), I add peroxide, solution turns green (Cu+) and repeat... When solution stays green, all copper disolved (takes like one week). Cleaning boards, filter, get gold on filter. Then I cupel it with bismuth. Recupel if needed, XRF showed 99,8 % purity, no chemical purification needed. I saw you have elecric furnace, may be you could try this ancient method. Regarding chips, I cut it out, so no legs with solder (small scale), I burn it, crush, HDD magnet in plastic cup extracts iron, sieve out larger metalic parts and sillica (100 mesh), goldwash powdwr carefully, and cupel. May be I loose in gold washing, but no chemicals needed, no chemical waiste to deal with. As I said, what works in small scale, might not work in large scale and vice versa. May be, you can try cupelation, works realy well...
Hi Fran, thanks for watching and sub :) For the leaching of boards and fingers I already have approx 20 litres of copper chloride so no need for peroxide. When my solution starts to get very dark just add a little more HCl bubble air through it and its like new. 20 litres should last me a few years. Peroxide and HCl can dissolve gold. Only use peroxide to get your reaction started when using fresh HCl, and only a very very small amount depending on the amount of HCl. Keep your 30% peroxide in its storage bottle but make a smaller bottle of 3% strength. The 30% is too strong for leaching, you only need a capfull of 3% in 5 litres to kick start your reaction. Once copper starts going into solution it is the copper chloride that leaches the base metals, not the peroxide, although the peroxide will make the reaction faster. Peroxide has the same effect in HCl as nitric acid, its an oxidiser. It takes longer to dissolve the base metals without peroxide but if the peroxide concentration is high enough it will dissolve some of your gold. Not a problem if you have excess copper/base metals as the gold will cement out on the them, but what you don't want is the gold cementing out on the copper traces inside the finger board where you cant get at it, or even worse you exhaust the copper on the boards and there's still active peroxide, without base metals to cement the gold the solution will start to attack your gold. I'm definitely going to look into cupellation, thanks for the reminder. I need to start doing processes that use less acid's. My electric furnace can only reach 1200 but I figure that should be hot enough to melt the gold alloy. I haven't ran it to full power yet. I only really use it for depopulating boards, so I set it to 400C. To be honest I'm scared of it hahaha Sounds like you're doing the right thing with cupellation, keep it up. When you are ready to do your next cupellation record it and post a few video's to get a channel going. There are lots of us on here that will watch them, and I'm intrigued by the process you describe. I have subscribed and will be looking out for it :) We need more people posting content as it breeds idea's and helps build the community. If you're not already a member join the gold refining forum. Hi TJ, thanks for the info, what do you reckon is the best way to get rid of the ash? I've tried sluicing and blue bowl in the past. BB tends to let you see whats going on so I like that method. I would like to nitric the legs and include it but there's a lot of them and would cost a lot for the nitric here in the UK, probably more than what I expect would be trapped. I was planning on leaving them in the wastes to disappear over time and get any gold back later when doing clean ups.
@@scouseurbanminer5106 do not worry about getting rid of the ash. Nitric it all to strip base metals then AR it all. Yes looks terrible, and a few re refines.... As for the nitric. There are several tut vids here on the YT to make your own from cheaper chems.... Just ideas.
@@tj8244 thanks, my issue is regulations, EU rules forbid possession of nitric above 3%, I’d need 20 litres to do them metallic bits in haha I will do away with the washing step next time to see if any improvement but I still have all the remains sitting at the bottom of a large barrel. Nothing gets thrown away before treatment and they are isolated in their own container so hopefully if there’s anything in there its recoverable, thanks again.
Hi Tri, i'd be guessing at mid-high 90's, gorgeous colour and no visible evidence of contamination, prob 95% would be reasonable estimate, i don't have an xrf to test them. A third refine with ferrous sulphate to drop the gold would probably push them to 98-99%. If I get a chance I will take them to the jewellers and get an xrf done to check

Unlike my previous video I didn't buy all the RAM used in this video specifically to see if it was profitable. I'd say at least 50% came from scrapping out old PC's which I got for free or very cheap. Other boards came from places like facebook marketplace and gumtree as part of scrap computer parts listings.

@@scouseurbanminer5106 For cupeling is 1000 C enough, bismuth alloy needs less to get liquid... high temperature keeps oxides liquid and be absorbed by cupel.

lost gold washing away the dust and ash. Fine Gold tends to stick in that. Nitric the legs you threw away also.
Hi TJ, thanks for the info, what do you reckon is the best way to get rid of the ash? I've tried sluicing and blue bowl in the past. BB tends to let you see whats going on so I like that method. I would like to nitric the legs and include it but there's a lot of them and would cost a lot for the nitric here in the UK, probably more than what I expect would be trapped. I was planning on leaving them in the wastes to disappear over time and get any gold back later when doing clean ups.
@@scouseurbanminer5106 do not worry about getting rid of the ash. Nitric it all to strip base metals then AR it all. Yes looks terrible, and a few re refines.... As for the nitric. There are several tut vids here on the YT to make your own from cheaper chems.... Just ideas.
@@tj8244 thanks, my issue is regulations, EU rules forbid possession of nitric above 3%, I’d need 20 litres to do them metallic bits in haha I will do away with the washing step next time to see if any improvement but I still have all the remains sitting at the bottom of a large barrel. Nothing gets thrown away before treatment and they are isolated in their own container so hopefully if there’s anything in there its recoverable, thanks again.

How pure are the gold beads?
Hi Tri, i'd be guessing at mid-high 90's, gorgeous colour and no visible evidence of contamination, prob 95% would be reasonable estimate, i don't have an xrf to test them. A third refine with ferrous sulphate to drop the gold would probably push them to 98-99%. If I get a chance I will take them to the jewellers and get an xrf done to check

@@palazzo5875 ah I see, I have no idea mate but CPUs vary massively, I could do a video when I’ve saved a stack of them up but it would be a while in the making, I have a couple of other projects on the go already
Do you live in the usa? If so i would like to ask you to refine some gold for me if possible. It is only about 6 grams but i tried to do the cupell method on it and used bismuth... ended up fully mixing the gold with bismuth and cannot get it back out... So if you want to help me out i would be down!

@@Frenki-gy9zd hi Frenki, thanks for watching. You can’t buy it without an EPP license. I haven’t found anywhere that will sell me it without one. APC Pure will sell it and ship it to a home address if you have a home office license but it is expensive.

@@David-eb2di Hi David, thanks for your question. I honestly don't know the exact cost on this lot. Unlike my previous video I didn't buy all the RAM used in this video specifically to see if it was profitable. I'd say at least 50% came from scrapping out old PC's which I got for free or very cheap. Other boards came from places like facebook marketplace and gumtree as part of scrap computer parts listings.
