My favorite Beach Boys song is "Feel Flows" (from SURF'S UP). It is SO unlike anything else I've ever heard from them, and yet clearly them. You may have heard it on the "Almost Famous" soundtrack. A close second is the song "Sail On Sailor" (from HOLLAND).

Indeed - and way before that Capitol released "Stack-o-Tracks" in 1968 with several "Pet Sounds" tracks along with a number of others. It didn't sell very well, but one cool thing was the original album included a song book with all the chords and lyrics - I guess they wanted people at home to play along with the backing tracks.

"Sail on Sailor" was written primarily by Van Dyke Parks (lyrics) and Brian Wilson, with additional lyrics by Ray Kennedy, Tandyn Almer, and Jack Rieley. Almer, about whom too little is known by too few, wrote "Along Comes Mary," which The Association turned into gold in '66.
A good friend of Brian's, Tandyn also co-wrote 1972's "Marcella," another criminally under-appreciated "mid-era" BBs track!

    Incredible art, everywhere you look.

There is some history to the placement of this song on the album. Sloop john B wasn't really part of Pet Sounds. It was a song they had recorded a released as a single a few months before starting work on Pet Sounds but Capitol Records demanded that Sloop John B be part of the album because that was the norm to put the hit single on your albums.
So the story goes that Brian decided to put Sloop John B at the end of side A so that it was sandwiched between this instrumental and the end of the side, sort of hidden away from the rest of the album. I'm not sure but the title of this song "Let's Go Away for a While" might also be referring to "going away from the album to visit Sloop John B for a while".

So after a nice two hour kayak/fishing trip on a lake of glass (not the norm!) under cloudy skies, I went for a walk and my wife took the chance to catch a nap. Nice dissection of "I'm waiting for the day"!
"Let's go away for awhile" might seem like filler a bit, but musically sums up the essential feel of the album. That cosy, escapist tranquility Brian would pursue from here on time and again, especially on albums like 'Friends' (1968).

Justin, delighted to see you getting into da Boys. Let's Go Away For A While just might be my favourite instrumental - such a wistful, beautiful chord progression filled in with heavenly sounds.
Sloop John B, the last song on side A, really shouldn't be there. It might have been a decent standalone single to sate fans of the early Beach Boys, a nice singalong trad.arr. song, but it totally disrupts the Pet Sounds mood. I don't know what they were thinking. (I smell Mike Love, but I might be unfair just on account of not liking the fella.)

Beach Boys: awesome. Early work, car songs. None of them were surfers. If you really like them, check out Jan and Dean; the Beach Boys listened to them while still in school. They sang each other's songs. A famous one was "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena". The hit record was Jan and Dean, rather primative. But they were overshadowed by Brian Wilson's virtuosity, and better recording.

Pet Sounds is a masterpiece in some ways, but more from Brian Wilson than the band. Somehow the album also casts a shadow, what the grumbling of Mike Love - how can it be otherwise, just like with the Smile album, where Love still fell out with Van Dyke Parks because of his obscure lyrics, which Love did not understand - with his disapproval and ostracism because of Brian's work here. Capitol Records met with a mixed blessing, because they did not like the album and accordingly did not promote it, therefore only number 10 in the album charts. All of this had hurt Brian very much.

Right. Not loving the album so far, and IWFTD continues that trend. Very much a song of 2 halves. The gentler sections are a little twee, and sickly sweet. The louder, all in sections, i found to be jarring. The heavy timpani, too overpowering, too pronounced in the mix for me. Now, LGAFAW, this a pleasant surprise. Very short, but pretty sweet, in a good way. Nice melody, good use of strings, and horns. Very much a Bacharach/Mancini, vibe to it. And the timpani here dialed back. I enjoyed this one.

The fact that these songs do nothing fir me is why I am not a Beach Boys fan. I find this whole album highly over-rated with God Only Knows being the standout. I feel like, unlike many of their contemporary bands who are rated as high as they are, comparatively, the Beach Boys always come off dated. They don't age well. Based on the music of the Era that I have heard, this album was ground breaking and likely the best album they ever made. But it might not make my 1966 top ten. (I have to remember what else came out that year.)

I find the songs catchy and several of the arrangements use very unorthodox instrumentation, but where the album falls apart for me is with its lyrics.
They seem very juvenile to me; as childlike as Brian Wilson's whimsical mind (even though he didn't write them).
People always go on about how sophisticated the album is, as if it's presenting brand new ideas to a world who'd never heard them before,
but there's no more depth or insight on Pet Sounds than you'd find in a romance novel or by watching a soap opera. It's teenage stuff, basically. Sweet, but not deep.

"I'm Waiting for the Day" is fine, but I don't think "Let's Go Away for a While" is nearly good enough to be included on what's supposed to be one of the greatest albums of all time.
To me, although it's pleasant to listen to, it sounds like what I imagine they were playing in travel agencies during the 1950's while advertising cheap, cardboard holidays to Hawaii.
They'd show you an idyllic image of a sunset beach with a palm tree and tasty beverages, perhaps served by a girl in a hula dress, accompanied by a trio of fat steel drum players.
But then you'd get there and you'd have to share paradise with the Joneses, because every working class schmuck in the world had the same bright idea (and it was all they could afford).
"Let's Get Away for a While" is the cheesy tourist postcard on Pet Sounds. And it would be the worst track if it wasn't for the title track; another instrumental piece.
Brian wasn't very good at those...

Pshaw. It's an incredible impressionistic piece - the Les Baxter-esque tropicala middle section is just one of the tone colours he's playing with. Way harmonically advanced and a fackin' masterpiece - anything but cheesy. Try again.
