  • Astra's First Launch for NASA Got BIG PROBLEM
You'd be surprised to find out that the most recent highly anticipated space endeavor has nothing to do with the demon of the space world, SpaceX. The newest member to be welcomed in the VIP space vehicle manufacturers club is none other than Astra. This company was all set and ready for its first-ever rocket launch when things went terribly wrong all of a sudden. The reason? Uncertain.
So stick around till the end to find out if this failure was a matter of incompetence or sheer bad luck.
NASA and SpaceX have dominated space exploration for years. It looks like other companies were tired of watching them succeed from the shadows and have decided to bring their A-game into the business. One such company, Astra being a newbie, is working with NASA on its very first rocket. The two companies struck a deal that Astra will build the carrying vessel while the payload will belong to NASA's ELaNa 41 mission.
A bit about this mission, it comprises four tiny research Nanosatellites intended to orbit the Earth. These satellites, known as Cubesats, came into being by a joint collaboration of three universities, including the University of Alabama, New Mexico State University, and the University of California Berkley in NASA's Johnson space research facility. These satellites will send information regarding our planet's atmosphere and form an essential part of our planetary defense system. Around the time NASA was working on the CubeSats, news regarding Astra's Rocket 3.3 surfaced. The details of the project were looking quite promising, so the officials at NASA thought it best to merge the two interventions. This decision sounded reasonable initially, but we can't say the same after the recent failed launch of Astra's rocket.
Alright, let's address the elephant in the room. What exactly is up with Astra's rocket that the entire space community is going bonkers over it? The uproar about Astra's space rocket started somewhere in January when the company made the groundbreaking announcement of setting up a final launch date. The missile was supposed to be soaring in space by the end of January, but the launch was postponed owing to some minor fault in the spacecraft's engines. Witnessing space companies postpone official launch dates isn't something new, so we won't go too hard on Astra for this one. The 3.3 vehicle was then set to make its first-ever launch on February 8th, and to the public's disappointment, this mission was aborted too. However, this time the reason was rather embarrassing.
