  • We put together a video explaining all the variants of Toyota 3SGTE and 5S Crankshafts. Also added is some of the billet race crankshafts we use, custom made 86mm stroke cranks and Brian Crower crankshafts.
    We also talk about the variations in race oil pumps and front dampers for the 3SGTE and 5S.

    Hell yea! More 3sgte stuff. Love the info. My future goal is to do exactly like you guys said. 5s block w/ 3s crank 2.1L. Glad to hear you guys support that setup. Atsracing says it's a waste of time. They like their 5s cranks however, there's just something about machining the 5s crank to accept 3s rods that doesn't sit right with me.

    A video on your opinions of the 3S/5S block versions would be great. Strengths, weaknesses, when they crack, etc. There is a lot of misinformation out there.
    I'll be putting your billet mains into a half-filled +98 5S (not the square freeze-plug version unfortunately), with girdle, evo8 arp 11mm head & mains studs, etc in the next couple of months.
    Hoping it'll hold together for a while.

      Doesn't have to be a square boss block, the dragster we supplied the engines for in Malta does not use a square boss block and has been 6.49 at 203mph! Only difference is it has a full fill!

    • @mwpaus
      @mwpaus 3 роки тому

      @@psiracing only difference? That's quite a big difference! Only dedicated drag racers are interested in a fully filled block.

    • @psiracing
      @psiracing  3 роки тому +1

      @@mwpaus u can do a half fill if your goals are to push it as hard as possible. Obviously depending on your driving condition. Your biggest reliability factor will be tune, our engines don't run high compression to keep our reliability window broader! That silver mr2 in our past video has made 715whp, non filled non square boss block and it will make more.

    Hi PSI Racing thanks for the video . Need to create an Intro and Outro max 30 sec each and add just a little more bring the videos to just over 11:00 minutes . Right now the 10:00 minute is the mark for YT ads they will probable add more this year . Keep up the content. Maybe if you attend a local Import event you can add some Toyo powered cars to share with your viewers to help fill in time on your videos. .

    Awesome video. Thanks for the no-longer secret trade secrets!! lol
    From what I have learned by watching your videos I think the main issue with the old turbocharged Toyotas, is that they didn't really flow-optimize anything. Whether it comes to the intake and exhaust manifolds, the oil system, the cooling system... it's all still very much 80's and older style engineering, with the iron block and all.
    I have questions (& for anybody in general please input if you have exp) if you don't mind-
    What is the typical output limit of engines using the factory 5SFE crankshaft? I haven't seen many results for those cranks besides people talking about the block advancements. Overall weight, diameter of the rod journals, and the balancer gear are some obvious differences. Most people just stick to the "turn the 5S crank down to use 3S rods, or use a 3S crank in 5S block" thinking. I have seen some Chinese steel connecting rods for the 5SFE, and those are tempting because they do not require special crank work.
    Also, what is the most responsive turbocharger, minding low-end torque, to use on these 2 liter 4 cylinder engines? Know anything about Borg Warner's ball bearing EFR 6258?
    Thanks!!! MR2 owner here

    • @psiracing
      @psiracing  2 роки тому

      5S cranks can actually handle some serious power, i say upwards of a 1000hp one the tune is right. Biggest issue is like you wrote, machining the crank to fit a 3S style rod or making a rod that fits the 5s rod journal. Which is why we always push the 3s crank because it just makes life so much easier

      @@psiracing Thanks for the info. Really appreciate it, these old Toyota engines, and the old mechanics are all retiring so the consolidated info is very useful

      Would love to see this as I've never had or seen anyone have bad experience with stock pumps even as high as 900awhp+/10,000rpm As far as I know the only 'mods' being the use of gen 2/4 27t gear so it's not spinning as fast and less prone to cavitation at extreme rpm, and using either thicker 5s/gen4 pump assembly or blacktop beams pump which even thicker again but slightly smaller diameter gyrator with the extra shrouding in the housing (block needs shaving to fit ..) paired with porting on inlet and outlets of pump and relief valve to avoid potential for hydro locking and shattering under freak engine conditions are higher rpm with the higher flow pumps

    • @joelucas6601
      @joelucas6601 3 роки тому +1

      In my mind a stock stroke and or long rod motor would help with pump longevity due to less 'intense' harmonics as well as use of a good quality damper pulley but that goes without saying at this point.. I've always wondered when pushing the limits whether it would be helpful to add another keyway on the crank/gear and possibly pulley when entertaining the idea of a dry sump pump.. is it something you've done/experienced problems with? have known and looked up to you guys for over 6 years now

    • @psiracing
      @psiracing  3 роки тому +2

      @@joelucas6601 appreciate that, problem with the oil pump, even the ones you mentioned in later generations. There definitely better but at the end of the day they are spun way to fast. When we do a dry sump or wet sump, we only turn the pump 50% of engine speed. No need for even excess oil pressure, we use to run about 65psi max. We have q mandrel that adapts to the front of a ATI damper to mount the dry sump/wet sump gears!

    • @joelucas6601
      @joelucas6601 3 роки тому

      Appricated the reply man, the more I read into oiling systems the more I hear that high pressure isn't actually a good thing which is a complete flip on your average performance enthusiasts school of thought... Have you considered or tried using larger pulley/custom belts with later gen pumps ?
