The part that always gets me that I didn't realize until like my 10th time watching, is that the mother always complains of migraines. She complains of migraines because she had shot herself in the forehead. And the children struggle to breathe under stress because she had suffocated them with the pillows. Still blows my mind.

Really don't think that's it, her migraines where part of what drove her to go mad and the stress of the situation she was in before going mad was what drove the migraines.

    • @CarTa3
      @CarTa3 Місяць тому

@mash83 i think she had migraines before but I thinknthey were exacerbated and she complains that theyre REALLY bad because Anne also has breathing fits where she breathes loudly and struggles for air because that's how she dies. So grace has had terrible migraines because that's how SHE died. Anyway, it's my theory

I don’t think the husband actually knew he was dead, I think because he was a soldier he is stuck in his own kind of limbo. “Sometimes I bleed” replaying his own death. “The war is not over” he believes he has to go back to fight in the war, that’s just how I always saw it

I’m not sure. I believe Ann told him what happened with the pillows at some point and he couldn’t be with Grace anymore after what she did to herself and to his children, but realized that Grace didn’t remember what she’d done and he couldn’t break her heart with the truth, so he left.

I always thought that the dad was a little ahead of the main 3, so he is beginning to grasp the situation while NK and the kids still believe they are amongst the living. The line “ I just came back to say goodbye to my wife and kids”, to me at least, speaks about his purpose for returning when he did. Just my opinion, but god damn this is how you write a thriller/suspense movie…classic for sure.

The real reason people had photographs of dead loved ones taken in that time period was because photography was expensive and many people never had their picture taken during their lives, so having one taken after death was the only way to have a picture to remember someone by. It was not about their souls.

    • @pravusprime

my fav thing about this movie is how scary it is while showing SO LITTLE. like 99% of the scares are something happening just out of sight, a noise that MIGHT be a ghost, or fake-outs like that god damn painting lol. can't think of any better haunted house movie that really encapsulates the paranoia of thinking MAYBE your house is haunted. that's probably scarier than actually seeing a ghost tbh

Side fact. Nicole Kidman's then husband Tom Cruise was a producer on the film. Their divorce was announced just before the film was officially released. Though they were both contractually obligated to the filming and production before they divorced.

There is a video, somewhere on UA-cam, with an analysis of The Others in which they do go through that idea, that Kidman was also channeling the feeling of being always spied upon, always alone even when not, suffering an existential crisis while her husband just... drifts in and out and having nobody to count on.

I did not see the twist coming the first time I saw this movie. I've always been impressed by it from a film making perspective. To keep the audience intrigued with such a small cast, and no change of setting, shows how well written the story is. Nothing about the film scared me, however. I always thought of it as more of a mystery movie than a straight-up horror movie. I mean, the horror elements are all there but in a kind of subdued, storytelling kind of way. No real jump scares or grotesque images. A good horror pic for people who don't want anything too scary.

I’ve loved this film for nearly 20 years. Saw it in the theater where, when the end is revealed, a man in the theater actually said right out loud “holy 💩!” And a lot of us verbally agreed 😂 only time I’ve ever been in a theater with strangers and we were all completely locked in, and collectively thought the same thing and everyone knew it. It’s my humble opinion as a horror connoisseur, that this is one of the best horror films of all time. The atmosphere, the premise, the gorgeous yet dreary period setting, that ultra original, utterly genius, very existential script filled w/ terror, tragedy and one hell of an incredible perspective, all brilliantly directing by Amenabar; and that location, perfect for the tone of the film. With enough suspense to literally make one’s skin crawl, and one’s heart pound in one’s ear. Just expertly done from start to finish. The kind of exceptional horror film that comes along about once every decade.
As great as it is, it’s almost criminally overlooked and drastically underrated. Despite a staggeringly exceptional performance by Kidman, rivaling that of Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby. Carrying practically the whole film, she expertly shares the fear, sadness, desperation, loneliness, rigid staunchness of beliefs, love of her children despite the horrifying things she did before they came to the other side, trepidation and sheer terror, with us whole heartedly.
Kidman turned in an Oscar worthy performance here, and no matter how many times I’ve seen it, it’s always an incredible performance and film. Thank you for reacting to it.

Watching the piano scene while knowing the twist completely recontextualizes the whole scene and it's really cool to think about. *Spoilers for anyone perusing the comments that haven't gotten to the end yet.*
The father is playing the piano, but stops when he hears the door unlatch and then open. While Grace is walking in, he's gotten up from the piano bench and is walking over to the door as she gets closer to the piano. Then he closes the door, while likely hanging around nearby it. Then Grace goes to leave and starts to gently push the door open slightly, and he's absolutely fed up with all the ghost shit and slams the door shut and locks it.
Probably how I'd be handling that situation lol

This is one of my favorite haunted house films, a very classy, old-school scary movie. While it's inevitably compared to the Sixth Sense (which came out just a few years before), I think this one did it better. In The Sixth Sense, the twist is just sort of the cherry on top, but the film could have worked without it for the most part. Amenabar has told more than once that they were starting the production of “The Others” when “The Sixth Sense” premiered.
A lot of people involved in “The Others”went into full panic mode but Amenabar decided to go to the movies and watch it, after that he calmed their fears because for him the two stories were too different for the similarities to be a problem.

If there's something that has released since we met and settled down and had a family, those most likely will be new to both of us. I will say in the intro if I haven't seen a movie. If I don't you can assume I have.

I love this film, it's the kind you remember long after you've seen it, not just a popcorn chewer. My mom always remembered a scene from a horror film when she was a girl (but not the title) where a little girls is outside her house screaming then she goes silent and a pool of blood starts leaking under the door. I found it in the Val Lewton collection, The Leopard Man. She remembered that scene for 50 or 60 years. Btw Nicole Kidman can do anything, I have a couple dozen of her films in my collection.

I love the ending with Grace explaining her thoughts the morning after. I think horror movies today either leave things ambiguous or unnecessarily end on a cliffhanger to set up a franchise. The ending could've been incredibly nihilistic, but it was nice that you get to see Grace, Anne, Nicholas, and the servants just going on in spite of the fact that they were all already dead.

My guess Nicole is viewed through the children's eyes, they died before her, so they remembered her as she was. We do not see what the adult ghosts see, mainly that she had shotgun wounds to her head. What was the hint is the statement by the daughter of the caretaker couple says "she couldn't take it anymore." The husband saw her, but had seen enough bloodshed in war.

Based on costume I think the caretakers were previous caretakers to the manor, who most likely (because they were all 3 in the pic), passed from some type of disease. I would list them, but there were A LOT from the 1850s through the early 1900s.

I figured it out early, when the death pictures were shown, that the caretakers were from another time. They became ghosts around the turn of the century, the mother with her children in the 40ties. The living people were from the fifties. So for a while, Nicole and the kids were "The Others" from the perspective of the caretakers, and the interlopers in the house.

The twist at the end didnt really throw me the first time I saw it - not that I'm saying it was predictable or dumb - but I jsut went, "..........oh......oh, okay, that makes sense, yeah."
Everybody else in the theater was slack-jawed, surprised, mortified, gob-smacked, and I was jsut sitting there like "Okay, that was a really cool, creepy well done suspenseful supernatural film."
I liked the twist, but I was probably the only one in the theater who didnt have such a visceral reaction to the main characters situation, probably because it was jsut really common sense, and it was more like a great mystery you have to figure out, more than something that relies on jumpscares or visual effects.
I loved the pacing, the atmosphere of it all, and the overall feel of it, it's a really great weel done film in the classic vein of something you'd get in the 1950's or 60's, minus all the shock value. This definitely deserves a place among the classics, and is definitely worthy of being called one.

I never figured it out, I thought the only ghosts were the staff. It's a fantastic movie and one i've watched many times since. It's already a classic.
The husband was aware that he was dead and that's why he was so startled by seeing his family and being able to communicate and interact with them, because that meant they were dead too, only they were not aware of it. The girl seems to be aware that something happened with the mom that day, she remembers she attacked them, but not dying, she just tells that to the father and he figures out what happened.
