    Great talk!
    It was especially nice to see him talk about the Larger pacific Striped Octopus. Whenever I've heard about them I've wondered, are they better able to learn from one another? I've heard that most octopuses can learn via observation even though they are quite anti social, so I wonder if there's any greater capacity in the ones that stick by each other.
    Good video.

    Just to get some confirmation, octopedies is correct and actually more precise since its made up from the hellenic words octo which translates to eight and pedi, meaning foot or leg. so octopedies are eight-leggers... i like that one.

    • @MrCardeso
      @MrCardeso 9 років тому +3

      +asiburger "Octopedes" refers to animals with eight legs, which includes spiders. So, maybe "octopuses" may be more precise in this case, in my opinion.

    Rich Ross, there are certainly more than just the three of you who know of the word "octopodes." In fact, while you seem not to be aware of it, you are a part of an elite secretive few; a loosely-knitted cadre of cephalopod purists. Although we use the proper "octopodes" when speaking amongst ourselves, most of us publicly use the more common "octopi" or "octopuses" in public to prevent exactly the sort of persecution you have described receiving yourself. Congratulations for coming out and speaking publicly about this sensitive topic. As an aside, I find I am more comfortable publicly using the word "octopods" because it is at least in the English dictionary and therefor easier to defend the use of to non-purists who would not tolerate the use of the word octopodes, although the word "octopods" a bit like the word "fishes" in that it is technically used to refer to more than one kind of octopus (and also including the paper nautiloids and other types of octopods).
