A TRIBUTE TO THE BEST GRIMPEUR OF EVERYTIME
The spectacle of Marco, in the drops and out of the saddle, going up a 9% grade, on a bike made out of metal, is just so gritty and old school.
Indeed. But let's not forget that his aluminium Bianchi is around 7 kilos. But still, sitting down and mashing down what seems to be 39/21(I think),is remarkable.
You will be surprised how light that metal bike is
The good old EPO days with big attacks. TDF not the same anymore.
@@stennilsen9584 same conditions for all cyclists back in the days. But. Marco prevailed, and showed the world something unimaginable that warmed our hearts for years and years.

And a tiny frame is lighter still.
Today marks the 20th anniversary of this amazing win.
Despite all the subsequent scandals, trials, battles and eventually his passing, Pantani's legacy lives forever and fans here in Italy consider him a legend and remember him basically everywhere.
No matter what has been said and will continue to be said about him, he made us amazing emotions and his presence saved cycling here.
Jason really? I mean, sure thing champions like Contador, Indurain or Wiggins admire everything he did regardless of doping, but I have read many non-Italian articles talking only about his EPO-positive tests, his fall from grace and how cycling in the 90s was rotten.
I have never met any Pantani fan outside of Italy to be honest. I really hope to be wrong.
I love watching Pantani ride. Noone like him today.
bhu vidya Yep.
He was capable of making us feel such thrilling emotions...he was by far the most popular Italian athlete in the late 90s and, as I said, despite all the stuff he went through later in his career, cycling really misses him.
Italy misses him.
We need more cyclists like him today.
@@SoporificMidori Dont believe the hype, press worldwide sucks but many many many people around the world consider Marco to be the one and only best climber of the world ever to have lived. For me valentines day is one of the saddest days of the year. This beautifull friendly guy who wanted to get out of cycling the day he found out about doping. I still love cycling but i miss him so much.Grazi Marco, r.i.p.
@@SoporificMidori EPO-positive test? You talk without knowing, and say BS, one after the other one.
I well remember this stage... I was living in Boone NC and went on a big mountain ride that day (Beech among others) in very similar conditions. I watched the stage after my ride in front of the fireplace. I remember thinking, "this sure does not suck:" both my ride and Pantani's excellent stage win.
"what Marco did today was bad for me but extraordinary for cycling" Jan Ullrich said at the end of the legendary galibier stage of the tour 98. When he literally saved a tour that risked not even arriving in Paris due to continuous doping scandals during that edition. Jean Marie LeBlanc thanked him no longer inviting him from 2001 onwards.
Here it is. This can be enough to tell what Marco's life was. The most exciting sportsman I've ever seen. one too special to feel good in this world.
I remember as a child the interminable straight at Gap with poor Bitossi overtaken at the last meter by Marino Basso, Gimondi's feat in '73 over Merckx, Zoetmelk and Ocana, then Saronni's splendid close at Goodwood in '83 but this beats them all. It is a legendary victory with gaps from other times that forever delivers Marco Pantani to the Pantheon of the greats. Every adjective and superlative are absolutely justified for what I believe is the greatest and truly dazzling sporting achievement in cycling in the last at least 50 years. Honor, regret and an infinite thank you to the Pirate and an affectionate thought for mother Tonina.
RIP Pirata. The most exciting rider ever
i wanted to write a comment...but Yours is perfect so I just give a like;)
Must have been nice to watch tdf before they had a EPO test. Not the same crazy attacks anymore .
@@stennilsen9584 not even EPO, it's the power meter than killed aggression. I mean even into 2010-2011 we had some awesome attacks and battles like on the Tourmalet etc. Sure, time gaps weren't as crazy but guys still went. Not its Jumbo Ineos train and attack with 100 meters to pick up time bonuses. Horrible. They need to get rid of power meters.
@@blackmamba3060When thinking of the great attacks of the era you mentioned, Contador really was the last great rider to ride that style. His attempts at gaining time back in 2011 were reminiscent of some of the pirate’s attacks from way out.
I spent the night on top of the mountain the night before, pissed rain and freezing cold but worth it.
Ulrich came by (about 4K from the summit) and looked dead, red bloodshot eyes, Riis pulling the entire time. Crazy stage, I’ll never forget it as long as I live. Hincapie was about 10 min ahead of the autobus, what a stud for such a big guy (he was bigger back then).
Thanks for the video Nestor ❤. Brings back beautifull memories of the one and only best climber of the world to have ever lived. Grazi Marco , r.i.p.
The Best Tour de France stage ever!
The time he'd be behind at the start of the big climbs (most years too) but he'd get that time back and put minutes now between him and the yellow jersey!! What a day and stage this was , as people have commented) Prob the best stage on a big climb espec
This is an epic stage for the ages.
Oh I love this video. Thank you so much for the series. This one of the best video we have on you tube.
Pantani on the big chainring!!! The boss!!
Pantani was amazing to watch.
*Is* ,because UA-cam exists.
May The Pirate rest in peace.
The day Jan Ullrich lost the Yellow jersey for ever
Imho the greatest attack in tdf history. Too epic. Great era for cycling.
Best attack ever. That's all. Pantani was a great climber and good man like Miguel Indurain. R.I.P. Pantani.
well...actually....he was much better than Indurain. Greatest climber ever
Much more exciting in the good old EPO days. Not the same attacks anymore
Well, I would argue that Eddy Merckx's attack at Mourenx was more spectacular. He made 8 minutes in that stage.
@@jamesmeisel4723Pantani put 9 minutes into Ullrich here as well
its awesome when someone does something unheard of or unexpected...but its even better when someone pulls it off!
Contador was an aggressive and exciting rider but he wasn't as exciting as Marco. This day was the most incredible I have seen since I started following this sport closely in about 1992. A classic David vs Goliath battle with Jan. Kudos to Ullrich for his attack the following day but Marco stuck to his wheel like a limpet all but sealing the TdF win and the last Giro / Tour double. RIP.
The best all the time ❤️
😂 The play by play hosts, the monster attacks, the crazy crowds this as a magic time in history that will never be repeated again.
It will never cease to irritate me that Pantani had to take the heat for doping. If he had never gotten that suspicious hematocrit reading, he could have easily competed with Armstrong for at least 3-5 years. He would have done the double in 1999 too, that Oropa performance was something else.
Love Phil Liggett, can't imagine a Tour without Phil commentating.
And Paul Sherwin a great pairing.
We won't ever hear Paul say "And he's wearing your favourite number Phil" again...
Marco Pantani was epic, he wanted to try and he succeded!
Marco hands down my favorite all time Tour winner and Alpe d'heuz king forever.....that I've seen .....to bad he was not surrounded by a better team and think he could have won another tour......and

A lot of riders couldn't handle the cold rain conditions. It made the attack that much more effective.
Most of us will never do the Tour De France let alone win a mountain, sprint, time trial.
So we must be satisfied with a victory here and there on our daily bike trail.
There is a Pantani in each of us.
I truly believe that.

leggendario!
Good to see the steel frames at work. SL,SLX,753,531,Oria. etc.
It would surely have been all nivacrom steel at that stage methunshow, wouldn't it? I can't remember but would it be Columbus genius and Reynolds 853 / 953?? I'm too lazy to go search but it was DAMN good stuff and contrary to what many people 'think' they know, these frames were much much closer to carbon than is known.
its aluminium 7005. Almost all drivers were on aluminium at this time.
Yes still good stuff I got a Pogliaghi Columbus SL with Campy Athena and Record. I ain’t getting rid of it! Even with the two carbons I got.
@@methunshow yes i have the CroMo version of this Pantani Bike. And i recently build a Basso Astra (Columbus EL) with newer Parts - Ultegra 6600 Group but still using Downtube Dura ace Shifters.
kohlrabenschwanz Funny Basso brothers hold the rights to Pogliaghi now I think.
I will never forget this day. I was only 12 but knew he would attack on galibier and kill ullrich to win the tour. nobody else believed it but pantani was of a different level as an athlete and human being _O_
I was 13 y. Old
That Day.
And I can Say I had the "opportunity" or Just a case , to see him, to meet him , both on Bike, he and me, Years later, autumn/Winter 2002, in Tuscany...
Last time I sow him (!)
He's the reason cause I did cycling and now That I don't still remember him as a hero, much more than marvel or an nba star. He's the real hero.
PANTANI the greatest bicycle climber of all time !
Pogacar has surpassed pantani.
@padmanabhaprasannasimha5385 no its other time and old bike
Last week i was in France and i bought a special edition of Newspaper "L'Equipe", called "Sommets de Légende". It was dedicated to the historic mountains which will be climbed in 2017, especially Galibier and Izoard. I was really disappointed to find out that among the greatest stages of Galibier there was not Pantani epic climb in 1998. Furthermore, it was even ridicolous to notice that there was 1986 stage, with Hinault who won without taking the yellow jersey, since Lemond came together with him. LMAO.
+Antonio: It's a hard one to comment on for too many reasons for a UA-cam comment, but I get your sadness and more than partially agree with you.
PANTANI VIVE
Quasi quasi oggi mi dimenticavo di guardarlo.
I remember.this stage so well , awesome
I watched this live. Epic racing. Ullrich always had bad luck.
The easiest gear Pantani had on that bike was 44-23, what a monster he was. ( and there were all doped I know but I don't care)
That's not true. It was 42/23 or sometimes 39/23.
@@KadaverKurt I wasn't there to count the tooth, but there is a very detailed video on Pantanis bike for that year done by GCN, and that is the ratio they show. But at the end it doesn't matter he was a monster climber no matter what gears he had.
good to see they are not on their radios every five minutes
Pantani had gr8 Cadence considering the rear cluster they used way back in 1998
The best Jan Ullrich tribute whithout any doubt @
Why isn't it like this anymore...
COL S. Trautman Yeah I was thinking the same thing. :(
COL S. Trautman Two things:
1.Pre EPO test, so the abuse was widespread and unlimited, riders thought it was possible to go out on an audacious break and were confident it would stick.
2. No power metres. This is the big one, no one staring at a screen whilst climbing, crunching out the wattage and calculating a breaks success depending on the numbers being done. In my opinion the power metre has killed exciting racing.
Thomas W Yeah I was thinking the same but they still use EPO but you just don't see people attacking with 10km to go up a climb and no one being able to catch him like when lance fell.
COL S. Trautman EPO is clearly still used, but now there is the ABP, and the test for its presence means that the unlimited abuse is curtailed. No longer can someone see a 10-15% gain in their power like they could pre 2000. Turning domestiques into Tour winners a la Riis 96'. What you see now are 3-5% increases, which is still huge, when races are decided by a fraction of percentages, but if you spread out that advantage over a longer stage, the chances of staying out and winning are slimmer. What we see now are calculated attacks a few KMs from the summits, which is likely to stick, like Quintana or Nibali in the tour yesterday. We also have to remember Pantani was outrageously talented and completely fearless, no one is willing to descend like he could today, especially in bad weather like this stage. He was one of kind, who could make up the time in climbs that he lost in the TTs.
Thomas W I'm watching the tour right now. One question, can Chris Froome who is in the yellow win the gain KOM points or win the polka dot?
LA LEGGENDA !!! IL PIU' GRANDE !!!
I am Italian and I know Pantani very well by listening to his interviews and those of his father and mother, I summarize his story in a nutshell. He was a boy who was looking for the most extreme climbs to test himself since he was 14/15 years old, he became a professional cyclist and he only met serious injuries up to 97, in 98 his first year without any unexpected has won lap and thunder then they unjustly stopped him at the turn of the 99 because the Neapolitan mafia had received a lot of clandestine betting on Pantani in that round, all attacked him and he who had a clear conscience could not react to the end and began to take cocaine, finally he was killed in 2004 probably because he wanted to denounce the injustices of the UCI and the fact that they knew that the cyclists were all doped. He too obviously took something at that time because everyone did it and you can not win against those who are doped if you are not even if you are the strongest, he wanted to change the system and this was done before the tour that not he had him participate in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and then definitively, he was a good person ...
are you saying the Mafia killed Pantani?
I swear every famous Italian person is involved with the Mafia. Or even foreign athletes who live in Italy.

Yeah, The Pirate sure could climb like gravity was going out of style! Makes me want to get out and eat a mountain for breakfast....then gravity brings me back to reality!!! Well that's getting old(er) for ya!
When you have your breakfast, just make sure you also get your dose of EPO.
I agree. I´m spanish and enjoyed Pantani much more than Indurain
Pantani gave such a big look over his shoulder when he attacked, as if to say, "is this worth it" - and then you could see his reaction when he saw that Ullrich was gone after one attack.
Great champions, Ullrich and Pantani, the good old days.
epic, that´s cycling
Epoic, you're right!
"His preparation hasn't been quite right" haha. It's quite something to watch them ride up those mountains at superhuman speeds back in 1996-1198. It's a bit scary, actually.
They still dope today but they can't get anywhere close to the speeds and power outage they had back then.
someone got a yellow rain cape souvenir @8:37
legendary thx for adding you have more of pantanis tour in english??
You'd think somebody would design a cape that could quickly and easily be put on in bad weather
Ciclisti normali diventati grandi, come Chiapucci o Rominger.
As a big Jan Ullrich supporter these pictures really ache. But Pantani is missing yet.
People always talk about drugs, there aren't magic drugs, drugs probably give 5% or less more stamina the other 95% is training and talent
So if the drug helped a contestant travel 100 kilometres in the time they would otherwise have traveled 95 isn't that a lot in a race? How about an extra 50m when your competition is breathing down your neck. Even 1% is an infinity in racing.

Everyone juiced up but what a stage - love this climb. Say what you like about this era there was some superb stages :)
Despite the Festina scandal, Team Pantani dared to continue doping, Team Telekom no longer dared to do so, or was no longer able to do so to the full extent. That's all.
No wonder, he got hammered this day.

And Contador...
rippppppp pirata i love cycling the ulrich e pantany virenque
Ulrich was too heavy to keep up with Marco
no, he just took less dope
there's got to be at least 30 pounds or 15kg between the two, if not more
in fact ullrich was found doped...pantani never.
pantani was 56 kg and ullrich over 75....if some of the two was doping the most to keep up those speeds uphill wasn't definitely pantani
the truth is the media wrote every day he is too heavy, he has 10 kg overweight. Jan made a diet in front of the tour because of the pressure from the media and got a bonk on this stage. he lost the tour because he hit the wall.
Jan didn't like the cold weather
Lo conosci Andy Schleck?
