I would pick up my little baby. Then, get a treat and give them to the visitor. He learned that oh boy, a visitor, they are going to give me a treat. It worked for us.

You have so much respect for your dogs. It's not fair to allow them to think they are in charge because they then become constantly on their guard and stressed. I hand Dempsey to people too and he likes it now. One friend doesn't like him up beside her but that's ok too, and he is still happy to see her.

After a couple of incidents where he barked at guests for multiple minutes (ugh!) I figured out a protocol that makes having guests over exciting and pleasant for him. Now, he usually doesn't even bark at the doorbell itself! I've never scolded him for barking (or pretty much anything else) in his entire life. Here's how I manage his manners at the door:
    1. I have trained him not to run out the front door until I say the word ‘okay’.
    2. When I know someone is coming to the door (I get a notification about a delivery, a friend texts me that they're here, I hear the mail truck outside, etc.), I get up before my dog does and I call him over to the door in a high-pitched, excited voice.
    3. I open the front door so that my dog can see out onto the street, ideally before the person approaching reaches my door. I continue to talk to my chi like the person coming to the door is the most exciting guest in the world, like Santa himself bringing him presents.
    4. When the person reaches the door, I talk with them and then ask if it's okay if my dog comes out and says hi. If they say yes, I say ‘okay!’, and my chi runs out and greets them outside. He receives pets from them, and he likes it.
    5. If the person is going to come inside, I invite them into my house.
    6. I call my dog back in *after* the person.
When he was little (I got him as a puppy), I also sometimes gave treats to delivery drivers so that they could give him treats during step (4). (If your dog is cute and things aren't too busy, they'll usually go for it!)
He still barks sometimes when he hears people right outside, and if someone lets themselves in or he doesn't see me invite somebody in, he will definitely make a point to alert me. But he does really well even with multiple total strangers in the house now, as long as he knows they're welcome. :)

Leanne awe, poor baby. So once a chihuahua becomes that skittish, it can take a lot of effort to teach them to trust people. I love your question though so I’m going to save it and make a video on it ASAP

Thank you so much. She’s nearly 3 and she still very nervous. I’ve always took her on walks so I don’t know why she still scared.
I had a Pomeranian before her who I sadly lost due to her having cancer at 13, but she wasn’t scared of anyone lol.
My neighbor as Alzheimer’s so he thinks my new dog is still my old dog and he wonders why she’s nervous around him.
But she actually stayed sat on his lap a couple of days ago. She still kept her eye on me but was pretty relaxed.
It made my neighbor so happy too.

He barks alot at night time and our other dog who is pit bull mix is very mellow(with this dog only, if we were outside hed bark at every dog when walking). He never barks at night unless its necessary. Im 37 weeks pregnant and im never getting full night sleep because even when i take the Chihuahua outside to go potty at 9 pm he always peas or bms at three am.
My husband doesn't care that im sleep deprived because hes at work doing graveyards. The dog followed him into the frys he was doing security at and weve had him for 2 months now and he still has accidents at night.
Im tired because i work full time child care from 7 till 4 and in the morning its just too much because i have to yell at our 4 and seven yr old to get up and get ready for school.
Sometimes i have my seven year old take him to try to prevent him peaing while im getting myself dressed. I have to tell our other dog that we have had for 4 years he needs to wait until his dad comes home (half hour) because im very soar in the morning when i get up.

And I can't pet our dog without the Chihuahua getting jealous and biting the dog. Idk why he's never hurt him back but I keep having to pet both animals at the same time. Our kids can't cuddle up to Dexter anymore because the Chihuahua gets overly jealous and bites.

How do I get my Chihuahua to accept my 2 year old as a pack leader as well because she only seems to accept me as pack leader I got my Chihuahua at a year old and I don't think she was raised around toddlers

    • @SweetiePiePets
      @SweetiePiePets  5 років тому +1

Danielle Johnson excellent question. It can be so difficult to teach chihuahuas to accept children - especially when they haven’t been exposed to them from a young age. I’ve thought a lot about why that would be and I’ve come to the conclusion, chihuahuas just don’t know of they can trust children. After all, children can be unpredictable and loud. So, for starters I would make sure the chihuahua has access to a crate or a safe place which she can run to any time she’s feeling insecure. That might seem counterintuitive but it’s important for her to feel secure. Next, establish a daily routine where the chihuahua and the toddler get have some positive interactions with each other. I recommend to have your daughter remain seated on the floor at first so the chihuahua doesn’t feel as threatened. She just needs to learn to trust the baby. Chop up some tiny pieces of chicken and put on a plate on your daughter’s lap and make sure the chihuahua realizes it’s the toddler who’s in control of the chicken. if she’s too scared she’ll simply stay in her crate, but as she begins to trust your toddler, she’ll likely be very enticed by the chicken.
Also, this is a hard one for kids.... chihuahuas are very independent and they will like people on their own terms. It will happen easier if the chihuahua approaches your daughter rather than the other way around. If your daughter ignores the chihuahua, she won’t feel threatened and will be more likely to approach her.
Lastly, if the chihuahua is actually aggressive with your daughter, you as the pack leader have to let the dog know that wine be tolerated. Put the dog down on the floor and ignore her anytime she acts that way. Bring your daughter up on the couch with you instead. The dog will eventually learn she is beneath your daughter in the pecking order if she has to go on the floor while your daughter is on the couch with you.
I recommend to start with those exercise daily for now and see if their relationship starts to improve. Keep me posted 🙏🏻

Tammy Sanders I’m so glad you found my channel. Is your chi’s name Tank? That’s a cute name if so! I’m imagining one of those really stocky Chihuahuas 💕 and that’s why his name is Tank?
Well, in spite of his adorable name and imaginary matching adorable cobby body shape, Tank is a naughty boy indeed! You’re so right that he thinks he’s the boss and sometimes when they get to that level of aggression, it can be difficult to break those bad habits. But it can be done with a lot of consistency and patience - a LOT 😬
That’s why I don’t recommend for anyone to get a rescued chihuahua unless they have a lot of time on their hands to dedicate working with any emotional trauma the Chi may have endured through their life. Now I don’t know if your guy was a rescue, but he certainly has picked up some bad habits somewhere 😩
So first thing, I recommend to keep him on a collar or harness and leash every single time you go outside. Just the process of being “tied” to you, puts him into a subservient position. If he starts barking or being aggressive toward another dog or person, kneel down to his level and look him directly in the eye and point your finger in his face at the same time you firmly tell him “NO”! You’ll likely have to stay down there and keep telling him that over and over again until that dog has walked on by and is out of sight. Keep practicing that on the daily and any time he has even the slightest success where he listens to you and modifies his behavior, give him a very tiny treat. Seriously tiny. Like a piece of chicken the size of your finger nail. But ONLY if he listened to you. If he continues being aggressive and barking while you’re being firm with him, then he does not get a treat.
Do those exercises daily starting with very short walks and then only increasing the time as he shows progress.
Now the biting thing, that’s a different story. Biting CANNOT be tolerated. If a dog bites their human and gets away with it, that reinforces the idea in their own mind that they are the pack leader. That’s what he thinks, that he’s the pack leader and you’re supposed to be subservient.
The way I deal with an aggressive Chihuahua that’s about to bite is by firmly telling them “NO” while at the same time I grab them with both hands and hold them upside-down on the floor or couch until they stop struggling (couch is good so that you don’t have to bend down so far and it’s soft in case he’s struggling a lot, no one will get hurt).
In dog language going belly up is a sign of submission. If it gets to that point, be prepared to take control. He will not go belly up willingly so you’ll have to really hold him tightly. I like to have one hand on the chest area right under the chin so you can avoid his mouth in case he bites. The other hand can hold down his hind legs. Hold him there until he stops struggling. If he’s extremely stubborn, it may take a few minutes for him to stop struggling so be prepared to hold him firmly. Talk calmly and firmly while you’re holding him there. The second he stops struggling, let him go immediately and continue going about your day and act like that never even happened..... but do it again the next time he tries to bite
The belly up tactic is forcing him to say in dog language that you are boss. He won’t want to say that but if he behaves aggressively, he NEEDS to be corrected. That’s probably the most difficult part because someone who didn’t know what you’re doing might think it’s mean, but dogs use body language for communication. This is how they communicate with other dogs and if you watch a group of dogs together for any period of time, you’ll be able to see from their body language who the “pack leader” is. The subservient dogs willingly go belly up for the pack leader.
Eventually, with patience and consistency, Tank can be taught that YOU are the pack leader and his job is to follow your lead.
I sure hope this info helps and maybe some of my other videos as well. Good luck to you and Tank. Please let me know if you have other questions.
